Finished Programs / Re: IDEA: Scrollable Desktop Like a Folder
« on: January 13, 2008, 07:43 PM »
you can setup desktop views here:
http://www.extradesktops.com/

its free i think..

to be specific, if your desktop if full of files, a scrollbar will appear on your desktop.. you can also thumb view on desktop.. but these features will appear only on your selected desktop folder which is overlaying the real desktop. from https://www.donation...x.php?topic=10757.25

nope.. i wish so.. still, when other people click the removable drive in "my computer", they'll still activate the virus with it's autorun. this one is also good: http://www.geocities...nca2000in/msp/#wimp2

the purpose is for those non-techie people to avoid usb viruses/worms which is the source of spreading. with this, you can simply pass it to emails and will benefits many people. the explorer interface is just for them to recognize that they are exploring a USB drive which may come handy by dropping files there(also avoid using windows explorer's vulnerability issue)

thanks for the reply btw :)

I'm looking for a program to be open before exploring the USB drives. as today, most worms and viruses came from USB drives. this solution is to make the USB explorable and ejectable. hope for help in coding. thank you very much..

about Ave's Extra Desktop, i'm so stupid, i didn't notice that you have to uncheck the "in place browsing" to disable the whole desktop changing to a certain folder.

Problem seen:
* unable to open compressed folders on desktop
* no controls for wallpaper (but not important)
* no back button when in "in place browsing" is enabled
* scrollbar appears in desktop when multiple files are viewed

ohh. that is good to hear that it is free.. yeah i know to troubleshoot those thanks btw.. i was hoping for its improvement from the bug. what is great is that it works like in DLL, not an application. but when it hangs.. you have to refresh exporer.exe but not a serious issue i think.

nice find! you have to install the visual C++ 2005 first before installing Extra Desktop. its works great just what i wanted! i don't mind if the icons doesn't have shadows (very good thing there is that it is layered to desktop even if you press win+D while dragging a file). (expires on January 28) :(  it got everything i need but i think its not free..  :-\

and the bug i've discovered in, when you click a folder, the whole desktop goes to that folder instead of opening a window for it. and it cannot be reverted back to it's root desktop profile even if you press the backspace key. i think each desktop must have a "back" icon(if folders opening aren't implemented as floating windows) and a "recycle bin". (theres a desktop scrollbar and view as thumbnails which is cool :P )  but still not it..

yes thats it(almost).. but it's the same with the one i attached here. i need a free version and is able to extract and add items to it's container exe. everytime.  :) thanks for the reply

85

ok.. seems this one http://www.aw-soft.com/webexe.html is able to make a exe with set of files inside that is loaded in the memory.
* this idea is very simple ~ a single file portable application that can put a file inside it. (and out)

Living Room / Re: The Canonical LCD Thread at AnandTech.com
« on: December 25, 2007, 01:50 AM »
Still few review for Acer P223w. i'll just put it here. i bought one yesterday after my hard research days about LCDs battling with HP, LG and Samsung for price and value. everything are just great btw. the issues about the screen resizing @1680X***(i found on other review) is all about the "video card" driver is not updated. one thing i noticed that when I'm using the DVI inputs, the screen is zoomed in. the LCD is still using 1280X*** while the video adapter resolution is @ 1680X1050 in DVI mode. or maybe i haven't yet figure it out. tested some clear HD movies and games and no ghosting effect or not really an issue here.

« on: December 16, 2007, 03:23 PM »
I'm starting to warm up to this idea, as distinct from a virtual desktop tool.
A virtual desktop tool (like virtuawin, which i like), is nice for running multiple programs on different virtual desktops, etc.

As I see this request, it's more of an occasional switching between modes of working.  So when you switch you want different icons, wallpaper, etc.  It's not about running multiple programs on dif desktops, just about setting up different desktop environments suited for different modes of working.

that is very true sir mouser. The idea behind it is that desktop is a very accessible area for multi-tasking work. if the desktop environment can change modes, it would be easier to work with files/folders and apps shortcuts by its modes.

hey thanks perlguy..  :)

:tellme: im still using fat32 fs for my xp sp2.. but the ahk script didn't work for me(or ... coz of I didn't try the junction.exe from sysinternals yet)..  anyways, the program "ManageDesk" 's  folder switching did work, but not free (meow  :( ) . can we ask them how they did it?

I already did tried Dexpot. It has all what I want, the "Desktop Overview", It also has the ability to customized which Icons are presented on each desktop, But the assignable "Desktop Folder"(as in Files/Folders) wasn't there only the hiding of desktop icons/files/folders to a selected desktop~ which i really need most(assignable/switching). actually, managebyte's ~ ManageDesk 2.46.11 did it already, but the virtual desktop(taskbar of window's management) function ~ that is to be eliminated. their recent version also recovered from the bug when refreshing the desktop after the switching. my post here is a "hope" for the coders to code it. Dexpot is really great as im using it for the while(thanks dude n_n). i had followed your instruction to eliminate the virtual desktop function.

only the desktop folder switching and assigning is what i am looking/hoping.

moew!  oh yeah, a "new" button is cool also..  sorry about the mothership thing.. and spongebob is cool

about the image/app ~ the "image" is the container (e.g. iso image, cd image, diskette image, etc), I should've said "container", sorry..  :-[

I somehow found the function I am looking for(Desktop in a separate folder - function), this is it... but this one is too much from what I want. and the Icon arrangement is somehow buggy that gets cluttered every time I change desktop.. Also, the virtual desktop function cannot be deactivate(open windows) and lastly, its not FREE..  :(

ManageDesk
http://www.managebytes.com/

I have tried it.. looks great, and memory friendly, but it is much better if they didn't put the virtual desktop function(taskbar window's manager)

* found a lite version and is freeware (but only the virtual desktop is available, thats the one i hate):
http://www.brotherso...l_desktop_27431.html

this one, i never tried yet..
http://www.octatec.c.../vdesk_document.html - not tried

I still hoping for someone to code it.. pls...  :(

there is no better way to eliminate a virus than manually eliminating them.. check my blog:

Thanks for the replies.. :)

re f0dder:
encrypted rar(winrar) is good, also the window's compressed folders also works as what i am requesting. but the technology of independent, self-container and self-apps idea is not just focused to clean windows registry(portable apps),  unlike winrar and zips:

1. always ready for usage(in-case for clients presentation/distribution or old people, it wouldn't be a hassle anymore, as technology is used to automate things)
2. security of footprints
3. the idea itself (the era of self-container and self-apps to other types of apps)

re wolf.b:
* 1st quote:
i understand your terminology, using a "mother" to take control of compression/uncompress. this would be great also. but it is more easy for the users if it is built-in to the image/app file

* 2nd quote:
   any built-n compressor will do.
The problem with these is that a lot of them are "prepacked" and take a long time to re-pack
the case is, whats the difference would be on other compressor apps? maybe, using the technology of winrar? (set to a temporary folder but with footprints) or using an ISO/Image technology?(set to a virtual memory) then, when hitting the close button, it will be re-compressed again? ~ for me, any of those would be great as long as implemented.

If they were containers only, w/o the apps build-in, it will act like the other portable compression tools (z7,Rar,Zips~etc). which is not different from them and I'll just use them aswell.

Research UPDATE:
my long research, i found this, help me with it if its ok:

These are not what im looking for..  :(

* I'm hoping to someone who can code a portable .exe file-container with built-in internal compressor/uncompressor

* something like an ISO or IMAGE container "copy /b" in a compressor/uncompressor application

Off:  :-\ i'm thinking about a script when opening a folder, will automatically open an application inside it.. (so i can just change the icon of the folder unlike those portable-converted appz)
