I would start with HDTune, and then move on to the ultimate boot utils. See if the CD has a drive fitness test from the vendor who made your drive. I've found most of the drive utils on that distro to be pretty good.

It also comes with a DLL and api for using it in your own apps.

I use to run my entire work environment off my 8gb Survivor GT, and for a while it was great. I had it tuned to perfection, but then bad things  :'( began to happen and I had to move my environment over to a iomega eGo external hard drive, that had it's own problems but I have been stable ( my drive that is ) for months now w/weekly backups.. Now I just use my usb flash drives to move stuff around between systems and I keep one loaded with troubleshooting apps, but I don't work off of one like I use too..

OMG did that feel good.. That is what happens when you pick on enough people and start underestimate their abilities.. So many companies throw their weight around and abuse the system, nice to see someone with smarts and guts fall back on the same system to protect himself.. gives me hope..  :Thmbsup:
