well, seems that Nighthawk may just give DO a run for its money - as i was reading in the Nighthawk forums, hey are in beta for the Calendar module - i do like that they are taking their own sweet time getting this done so that it is done right -

seems that it will sync well with the iPhone too!

click the link to see some screen captures of the Contact module:

http://forum.nowsoft...c.php?f=29&t=345

and guess what - the color coding will actually work - unlike in DO where i wasted my time color coding my categories and they have no relevance in the contacts, or calendar....big sigh....

did you guys see that GemX has tutorials now?  however, i could not download them for some reason lol lol lol rotfl!!!!

Word of advice - don't install the new version. Its incredibly buggy. You are much better off using the previous version they put out.

i hate to admit this, but i did install the new version and have not found any more bugs than it had before - actually a few areas are operating better than they were.  but i don't use a Palm or the mail section  - mainly calendar, tasks, and contacts

i completely agree, Armando - they are the jack of many trades and the master of none  - instead of the master of a few.

as was previously mentioned, i think that they are/were overwhelmed.   if they are "behind the scenes" getting their act together (or if someone else has bought/taken over GemX), then they have the ability to have a comeback -

granted, most of the customers will be new(er) customers......

well well well,

seems gemx now has video tutorials on a number of subjects - so, it seems they ARE alive and well......

http://www.gemx.com/..._movie_tutorials.php

i haven't looked at any of them yet though.....

this is a very strange company.....

but, until Nighthawk is ready (www.nowsoftware.com), i have not found anything that does what DO does......for the things that i need to use...sigh...

one that i have been "monitoring" for some time now (this year) is shown below.  i think it has great promise when it gets released - in beta right now. i need to get some time to respond to one of the main developers about some questions that i posed  - particularly something that i need the program (called Nighthawk) to do - have mulitple calendars and be able to have the multiple calendars show side by side and A LOT of customizations within the program.

he is very eager to see the screen captures - i just need to take some time to send them to him

here is the link to the site:

So what are you guys gona do? Stop using the software? How about all the data you have collected?

JaneDC, DO has or rather, had so much potential!!  it was everything and more that i wanted and needed - i have still been searching for something that will superbly take its place, but so far, no luck - at least none that are already out there.

what i have found (and posted some time ago) is Nighthawk  (http://www.nowsoftwa...ex.html#SlideFrame_1) and i am impatiently waiting for it to be released.  i have joined the company's forum and am giving my suggestions for it.  we will see.....

i need multicalendars working side by side REALLY, REALLY bad - DO is the only one that does this exactly the way i need them, so for now, i am reluctantly using it.

plus, i shelled out $179 dollars for it 3 years ago......sigh....

well, at least a response after all this time.....i am actually quite shocked..

however, i don't agree with the closing of the forums if just for the following reason:

the "How To" section.  there were some great how to's listed that i never got a chance to implement or even read all of them.  shame those are also gone.

I can almost guarantee, if they ever do bring the forum back, it will be brand new - not inclusive of the original posts.

so the reminder pop up is no longer a problem...hmmmmm..

well, glad that it is "fixed" - but that still doesn't quite do it for me!!

i really think it was just Peter and Jon - well, i also saw someone named Abraham Walker on one of the links.  who knows, could be a made up name for either Peter or Jon! lol!  maybe Peter IS Jon!!!

like i have said before, i think it was dangerous for them to release all of these modules and not have any of them work near "perfectly" - i am sure they became overwhelmed.  extremely symptomatic - when you have too much to do, you spread yourself thin and the details DEFINITELY go by the wayside. you jump from point to point, instead of focusing on one issue, solving that issue and then moving to the next issue.  that was/is GemX in a nutshell.  heck, speaking of "Getting Things Done"!!!!

how can they continue to have a software product without a forum to post problems/comments?  (as has been mentioned above).  THIS IS INSANE!!  and what could they possibly be telling the new members regarding updates - nothing!!  because it would be posted on the site.  if i was interested in DO (having not ever had it before) and i saw that note regarding no more forum - i would definitely raise an eyebrow and decide against purchasing the product.  and since i would have trialed it first and seen  how buggy it is then:

no forum for support and resolutions + buggy product  = a big fat NO SALE

and what a shame...although i think that they (whomever this is) may make a comeback - i don't think i would be interested - because who's to say it wouldn't happen A G A I N.....

this really hurts me - i saw such great potential in DO  -  nothing like it out there - for customization features, that is and that is what i really needed and really loved.   i still really want to have hope that they get back on their feet (or someone buys the company out and reorganizes it) and they are able to continue.  i find that i am both angry and saddened all at the same time...

maybe, just maybe if someone more qualified and less sensitive takes it over, theres a some small percentage that i may give them another try.  but it had better be a damn great comeback!!!

if this is so, would anyone else reconsider - if some other group or company took over GemX????

in a really perfect world...

wouldn't it be great - if we could get together amongst our group, and design and program our own PIM?  if we had some developers/programmers amongst us..

we could put all the best elements of DO together (but make them all "work") and have great tech support, etc.

it would be a very exciting and the best PIM ever..

as i have been doing a very exhaustive search for a new comprehensive PIM, none compare to DO's features - (as trivial as this is, i really miss the quotes feature - it was kinda nice to see my quotes and i had over 500 of them too!!!) but i too, can't use DO like Darwin - i have tried as of this week.  i teach computer classes at a university and i cannot afford to look at my month calendar view and not see all of the appts one minute and then change views, come back to the month view and all of a sudden the entire month view of classes is there!!  its maddening - and so many things that were not fixed - and i think that a few of them were small things that weren't fixed - obviously some weren't.

but i tell you some things that disturbed me early (even when things were good):

1.  they did not concentrate on making sure that the initial features were working properly
2.  inconsistency between modules  - some features should have not only been evident in all the modules, but even placed in the same place - i.e.  the Private check box.  trivial, but not organized or thought out well - it was in the middle of a few modules and offset in others when it could have been centered.
3.  explanations that Peter would give for some forum members questions made me raise an eyebrow - how something could not be done - and it was CLEARLY accomplished in other PIM's.  i was going to debate with him on something that DO did not currently have (but could have), that he said it would not work and it clearly even worked in Outlook.  or his explanation was stooooooopid - for example - importing holidays into the calendar.  it should have been a very easy process, but the explanation given never worked for me
4.  development of the Finance module - it was soooo incomplete - i don't expect Excel, but geez!!
5.  the planner - should have been automatically linked to the calendar - if i make a vacation occurrence, why couldn't it show in the planner automatically?  other PIM's that have planners do.

and i could go on and on as you guys probably can too (we won't even get into Palm synching)

i just don't think that they were very organized - never updated their help area, blogs, etc. and explanations of how to do some things weren't clear - and when they were working hard at a new update, they would "disappear" - i guess at that point, we should have comprehended the lack of communication then - b/c we surely see it now!!  but probably for different reasons.

well, anyway, Darwin, i sure hope you are able to get somewhere with what you are doing?  i am really pulling for you!!

I just DSM'd GemX. I started out planning on being polite and asking once again for "news" on GemX and it's catalogue's future, but kitty turned rabid and I wound up demanding a refund on the cost of upgrading to Do-Organizer from TexNotes Pro on August 13 :o Having made the threat I am off to try to find an avenue to make good on it (I don't imagine that DSM is the right channel for this kind of thing). If nothing else, *maybe* the threat of a refund request will elicit a response - any response!

Good for you, Darwin!!!  i did my weekly trek to the GemX site, forum, and blog and saw your post.

i was thinking about letting the other GemX users/forum members know about donation coder as well - so the whole "family" could be together again (smirk)...so good for you!!

i have my fingers crossed for you......sigh.....

No word yet. I'm still trying to figure out how to request a refund (given that they state quite clearly that they will not issue refunds because of their generous 60 day trial, I doubt they have a mechanism in place to deal with them, so DSM is probably as good an avenue as any).

I'll keep you all posted!

remember to keep breathing in the meantime..hahaha

DO, was EXACTLY what i needed - but it is soo buggy that i cannot continue to use it.  for example, when i wanted to scroll thru my day view to see what i was going the next month,  sometimes NOTHING would show - and i would like have a mild heart attack, but then when i would scroll up and then back down again, everything would be there!   that was terrible!!

they promised to fix so many things and never did - i had my own list in scribe of things i wanted them to fix - that were either "next action", "someday", etc.  hell, Tiptop created a database  - i bet they never looked at it!!  i am starting to get really warm......need to stop this rant...

anyway....

i hate that i was such a staunch supporter of GemX, in retrospect!!   even near the "end", i just knew they would come thru...

damn, damn, damn

Sigh... - have you found your perfect "multi-calendar PIM" ?

well, i may have, but it is still in the alpha stages of development unfortunately.  it is called "nighthawk" - i think you gave me some programs to go to and one of them led me to Nighthawk!  it seems it will be wonderful when it ever gets out of its alpha stage and then out of its beta stage!

see link for Nighthawk below:

http://www.nowsoftwa...ex.html#SlideFrame_1

i am going to email them to see if they have or will incorporate side by side calendars - i keep using the term "muliple calendars", but what i really mean is "side-by-side" - i need to keep and see 4 calendars at once (like i could in "you know what"), yet see the info all next to each other.

the one that i may end up using until nighthawk is available to trial, will be essentialPIM.  however, i really like Red Box (http://www.inklinegl...ducts/rbo/index.html) (there is a newer version (6) available also) - but i cannot have multiple calendars and what i don't like is that multiple appts that overlapped APPEAR overlapped - i have a real issue with that - other than that, it is a really cool interface.

so, i am not sure if i have answered your question, Armando!!!   ;)

Outlook is not bad - i guess i don't use it/like it b/c i teach it - that might not make any sense - i am not really much of a Microsoft fan  -  possibly due to security issues with Microsoft in general......

TotalText Container has multiple calendar support. That's a referral for "sigh". With this software, you can insert calendars everywhere...!

as i have been searching for new PIM's, total text is NOW one of the top 3 that i am trying out. Thanks a LOT for this one!!!  it is proving to be quite useful!!

Obviously, something is wrong... with their attitude.
After the blog was setup, quickly after, the forum appeared and so the blog was left behind...

actually, their "way" of doing things had been going on for awhile, i noticed - almost from the inception.  what i mean is that, while it was great to introduce new modules (spreadsheets, etc), they did not perfect (accent on second syllable) the modules that they already had. and not really even perfect them, but ensure that they were working properly before jumping into something else.  they were notorious for that.  that used to really bother me.

usually when things like that happen, unless the company is really large and they can delegate specific modules to a dedicated team or person, then a lot falls thru the cracks.

there were sooooooooooooo many unfinished issues with DO.

i just think that they were not very organized  - and i would know, b/c i am obsessively organized.

funny making a program for organizing many things, and they, themselves were not.  interesting....

@Sigh...

Well, there's Info Select. Pretty expensive. But does what you're looking for. And much more, probably.

i checked out Info Select - though you cannot trial it - and as expensive as it is, i would really want to trial it first.  with my luck, i bet that would have been the perfect showcase for my multi - calendar, tasks, contacts, overview and massive customizational needs!  ahaha!!!

in a perfect world (right!), wouldn't it be nice if some other company was in the process of buying out GemX and "when" they come back, it will be under new management and fixed!!

i know, i know, i need to wake up from my dream.....

Do you need to sync with a Palm or a Pocket PC?
Have you decided to rule out Outlook?

No, i don't need to sync with anything - but i probably want to be able to use the program from a flash drive.

Outlook is COMPLETELY out of the question!

i had looked at barca www.barca.com and essential pim www.essentialpim.com, but they don't seem to allow for multiple calendars.  that is HIGHLY important for me, as are a lot of customizations of categories and fields.

Hi sigh and beldeamon...

Welcome to the thread for 'lost and confused' Gemx refugees! Ok, well maybe that's a bit premature but there seems to be a single train of thought along the ideas of everyone not knowing what's going on.

Just out of curiosity, i was wondering how often (if ever) any of you go to the gemx forum site to see if anything has "changed" and if so, about how often.

I am now down to checking about once a week (and not consistently) and have been actively searching (again) for an effective and consistently working PIM.  i mostly need a calendar scheduler (and it MUST have the capabilities to schedule multiple calendars (so far no luck with that), and a task scheduler - and overall view of my "day" would be great too - i also need to be able to create fields (or categories).

so, if anyone has any they are using or trying out - let me know.  finding a multi-calendar PIM is proving to be very difficult.......

thanks,

from ido2!!! to idon'tanymore!!!  (lol)

Hi Darwin and BethUK!  i am sooooo glad to have found you and glad you started this, Darwin!  i hope others from the GemX forum end up here as well!

I am, or rather, "was" a GemX DO forum member.  my name is/was ido2!!! on the forum

and yes, i, too, am grossly appalled at what has happened. i bought DO in late 2004 and joined the forum in 2005 i think and cannot believe that we have been treated this way.  like you stated BethUK, it doesn't take WEEKS to move servers.

i started to notice a change earlier this year and started to notice more and more complaints from people even trying to "get" the program and having a lot of problems.

i never downloaded the new version that was released, i would always wait about a week -  to hear what people had to say about it.  so i did not download 3.0.8. I had to format my harddrive and found that i did not have the old exe for 3.0.7 saved anywhere.  i was and still am very shocked that i was able to get the previous version from Jon (GemX programmer) so quickly - and because i got it so quickly, amid all the problems and complaints, i still had hope that all would be well.

well, one thing that stuck me funny is that when Jon sent the version mentioned above to me, he kinda made a statement that he was not surprised that i did not want the newest version.  i found that very oddly interesting.  seems maybe he, too, was a bit frustrated with things?...

well, i no longer think that all will be well  - not anymore.  i have been researching other PIMS - and unfortunately still compare them to the bevy of features that DO has/had and the virtual unending amount of customization that it also had.

but, life must go on.  i just really hate that i paid the price - 159 or 179 for the product back when and there's nothing i can do about it  - being that it is "unfinished" and buggy.

i really don't understand what happened with them....

sigh.....
