I think I may have found the problem: FARR seems to save its settings under "My Documents". However, this folder is not available at boot up, because I keep mine in an encrypted TrueCrypt container (other people might have it on a network drive), which needs a password before it's available. So when FARR is started before I enter the password (which is always, of course, because it's started before TrueCrypt), it doesn't find the config data and reverts to the defaults.

So the proper way to solve this problem would be to have FARR waiting for the configuration data to be available before starting. DeskSoft products (www.desksoft.com) for example, handle this very well! As long as the data directory is unavailable, the tray icon will simply flash to indicate that the program is waiting for the data path. When this becomes available, the program continues to start normally. That seems to be a good solution?

Yes, it does! With the exception of "Use document launch helper utility" on the general settings page, which is always on after restart?

I don't think so, because I only have 1 user account. And FARR is the only prgram that shows this strange behaviour, so I guess it's not a configuration problem of my system.

Hi!

I have enbabeld the option "Start automatically when Windows starts" and it works as it should. However, when FARR is started this way, it starts using the default options and not the ones I chose! When I close it and restart it (even with the same shortcut in the Startup group of Windows), it uses my settings (skin, history, etc.) Next autostart will again use default settings.

What's the problem here?

I'm using Vista x64 SP1 and FARR is the only program that displays this behaviour.

Martin

I did read this thread about FARR not indexing - but that's why I pointed out here, that indexing can be extremely fast! As far as I understood, FARR doesn't index due to performance issues, but as "Everything" shows, indexing can be extremely fast!

Did you take a look at "Everything"? If not, I strongly suggest it, because it's absolutely amazing how fast this program is! I don't see why the same technique could not be used in FARR...

Hi!

I like FARR, but its use is somehow limited because it can not really find all files and folders on my computer. When I add the drives (e.g. C:\, D:\, etc.) to the search folders, FARR becomes extremely slow and searches on these drives take eternally. How can this problem be fixed?

I also use the program "Everything" (http://www.voidtools.com/), which indexes all my files on all drives (about 250.000!) almost instantly! It's breathtaking, how fast Everything finds ALL files on ALL drives. I guess the whole indexing takes about a second (at best)!

Is there a way to implement the same indexing method in FARR? This would be nice, because then FARR could be used to really find anything on the computer...

Martin

Find And Run Robot / Re: Ugly selection drawing...

Thanks mouser!

Actually, this should be extremely easy: first draw the blue rectangle and then the three items (with transparent background).

This will make your product visually much more appealing and professional.

BTW: I really like it a lot - good work!

Thanks!

Find And Run Robot / Ugly selection drawing...
« on: August 21, 2007, 02:47 PM »
Hi!

Am I the only one who thinks the way FARR draws the selection (the blue background behind the currently selected list item) in an extremely ugly way? It should be one rectangle instead of three different ones in different sizes for the number, the icon and the description.

Is it not possible to make this a bit more professional looking?

Thanks!
