Living Room / Re: wanted: free web-mail + forwarding
« on: December 26, 2006, 01:30 PM »
I have been using inbox.com email for a long time and it have been great. It has a clean interface with 5GB (for US, CA and UK) or 2GB (for other locations) storage. Although I experienced some downtimes (sometimes lasted for a few days) due to hardware failure or other problems, their support reply quickly to your questions. Best of all, there is no advertisement and you can find a lot of nice features such as notes, calendar and storing your files and photographs. I disabled the spam filter as it works poorly - spam mails get into the inbox, non spam mails get recognized as spam ;D. It offers pop3 access, I only used it once and it could only download the emails but couldn't delete them - maybe I didn't set it right. It seem to be able to block most of the viruses as I have yet to receive one.

I am not sure if they are from the same company, there is another identical service at crawler.com. There is one thing that you need to be aware, if you send an email to a hotmail address, it may end up in their junk mail box. It will not be a problem if you are on their whitelist though. Overall, I feel that it is better than other email services and you have a easy to remember @inbox.com address.

Living Room / Re: Tower Defence: Flash Game of the Day

Managed to get the score of 67 on the first try. The graphic is quite boring so I didn't try again :P. I played a similar game before...not flash based...with nice graphic...but I don't remember the title  :-[

For automatic lock, you can use the password protect feature in Display Properties > Screen Saver

I have tried this, it is just like portable firefox + Tor. Surfing the net may be slow...as the traffic pass through Tor proxies.

It is very well done, but it seem to be more confusing for me than to understand it  :P

9
I am surprised that there are others having the same habit as me ;D. I like to try out new and interesting applications and now it filled up my hard disk  :P. So I stopped going to download sites and also unsubscribed from mailing list and newsletter. In the end...no time is saved! I spend more time playing game... :-[

Found Deals and Discounts / Get Ubuntu Linux CDs with Shipping for free
« on: September 29, 2006, 12:57 PM »
This is for those who still don't know that you can get Ubuntu 6.06 LTS CDs with shipping - totally free. Do get some for your friends and others to try out  ;D

Ubuntu is a complete Linux-based operating system, freely available with both community and professional support. It is developed by a large community and we invite you to participate too!

The Ubuntu community is built on the ideas enshrined in the Ubuntu Philosophy: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customise and alter their software in whatever way they see fit.

These freedoms make Ubuntu fundamentally different from traditional proprietary software: not only are the tools you need available free of charge, you have the right to modify your software until it works the way you want it to.

Ubuntu is suitable for both desktop and server use. The current Ubuntu release supports PC (Intel x86), 64-bit PC (AMD64), UltraSPARC T1 (Sun Fire T1000 and T2000) and PowerPC (Apple iBook and Powerbook, G4 and G5) architectures.

Ubuntu includes more than 16,000 pieces of software, but the core desktop installation fits on a single CD. Ubuntu covers every standard desktop application from word processing and spreadsheet applications to web server software and programming tools. Read more about Ubuntu on the desktop and Ubuntu on the server.

No surprise for Norton, it looks like a malware slowing down the machine :o
Surprise to see that Java runtime < .Net runtime.
Anyway, time to clean up some fonts ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: ZIP 2 Secure EXE - Freeware
« on: September 15, 2006, 03:10 PM »
There is a freeware "SFX Compiler" (http://www.uticasoft...ucts/sfxcompiler.htm) that allows multiple files of different types to be compressed into a single EXE file. No encryption though.

Try UnFREEz (http://www.whitsoftdev.com/unfreez/) simplest to use but lack of features. It may not be what you want as it does not have function to create or edit your images.

General Software Discussion / Re: Data recovery software suggestions?
« on: September 15, 2006, 02:45 PM »
PC Inspector File Recovery (http://www.pcinspect...overy/UK/welcome.htm)
SoftPerfect File Recovery (http://www.softperfe...oducts/filerecovery/)
Both are not powerful enough but they are easy to use and free.

GetDataBack (http://www.runtime.org/gdb.htm)
Although this is not free, it can retrieve any recoverable data from your disk. Powerful but make take some time.

There are also special software (free) for recovery of images:
Zero Assumption Digital Image Recovery (http://www.z-a-recov...l-image-recovery.htm)
Art Plus Digital Photo Recovery (http://www.artplus.hr/adapps/eng/dpr.htm)
PhotoRec (http://www.cgsecurity.org)

Most registry cleaner are unsafe to use for new users. I agree with mouser that there is a high risk of deleting something important. A few years ago I used a registry cleaner tool on Windows ME and it broke the OS, I have to reinstall the whole OS. I am still using a old and safe cleaner program call RegCleaner which is a freeware but no longer supported, so far no problem with it. There are also some free registry defragment and compression software that are safe to use, however avoid registry cleaner. Of course, it is important that you backup your registry and turn on system restore so that old copies of the registries can be restored.

What if someone such as your friend or family switch on your computer without your permission  :P What if you leave your computer after booting it up  :o

25
There is an older but it is a freeware version (2.35) of Total Uninstall http://freeware4u.com/modules/mydownloads/singlefile.php?lid=234 which I personally used in VM to track the changes to the system made by malware.
