I happen to know these circumstances very well, so here are my 2 cents (they're free ;-):

* If you don't need a car, then don't buy one / get rid of it. Especially when you live in a city, you can opt for this & choose public transport. If there is an occasions when you do need one, just ask a friend or family and offer to pay for the gasoline (most of the time they won't accept that offer).
* Do all your groceries in a cheap store (we've got Aldi & Lidl here in Europe) and don't buy other stuff than what you need and buy there.
* Cook yourself, and don't go out eating.
* Recreational activities: do something with your friends without spending (much) money. For example: organize poker nights, those are cheap + you can win something too). If you organize such activities at your home, make a pot & share all costs (drinks, chips, etc...)
* Limit or refrain from doing unnecessary expenses: no theatre, cinema, buying music. Don't be afraid to use the internet as entertainment channel & get rid of your cable tv. Download your music & video from the nets (+ there's a lot of free & legal stuff too on the net).
* Do not buy new stuff if it isn't broken yet. Don't upgrade your computer, etc.
* Stimulate a cheap hobby, for example: digital photography, walking, reading, writing ; put a stop on hobbies that cost you (gym membership, etc.). Go to the library in stead of buying books.
* Turn out lights, close doors, get rid of lightbulbs & choose the less power hungry variants.
* Sell stuff you dont need on ebay.
* Track your expenses & evaluate what costs you too much, get rid of that / replace it with something cheaper but equally valuable.

I've recently bought one on ebay(.be) & it fits the description you're looking for:

http://cgi.benl.ebay.be/2-GB-MP3-MP4-LECTEUR-SUPERTHIN-RADIO-VIDEO-FOTO-2GB-NUE_W0QQitemZ230061846689QQihZ013QQcategoryZ88474QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The plus side is that it's pretty cheap. (I paid 68 €)
The downside is that you'll need other head-/earphones. The ones that get delivered with this player absolutely suck.

Oh, and it's a clone, no brand name. It looks like an Ipod Nano, but it does not have 'the wheel'

Also important, it uses a 2.5mm audio jack. Most earphones have a 3.5mm jack. So you'll probably need a converter, but those are cheap.

And it uses .amv to play video, which isn't a good format for that. But then again, this is something I'll never use. (actually, who does watch video's on such a small screen?)

Anyway, if you're looking for something cheap which fits your description, then this could be it.

Edit:
They also have 4 GB versions.

have you tried Songbird?
It's like iTunes but better support for online music, like blogs and tho..

I don't like iTunes then it doesn't fill my requirements.. So.. go foobar go!

Yep... a total failure I might say. It didn't start correctly on my computer, not to mention it needs maybe a bit too much for a music player. It may be leaner than iTunes, but not leaner than foobar2000, that's for sure. I'll give a try to 0.2, let's see how well it fares

Funny you should say that. It seems one day later (18th october), the 0.2 version was released. See here:
http://www.songbirdnest.com/node/875

But I have to concur, I tried it out several months ago, with their 0.1 release and it was totally disappointing; I uninstalled it right away. But I'll try it again, it looks like a promising tool for discovering new music. I mean, look at the screencast:

Edit:
Oops, looks like I looked at the wrong date.
I was supposed to say: one day before.
I guess this is not news to you then.

Look, over there! It's superman!
:-[
Okay, so I confused foobar and musikCube wrt. source code availability. Feel free to chop my head off :)

Don't worry about that. I'm not that choppy.  :P
I'd love it to be open source though. But it's freeware and that's counts at least for something.

And since they're both open source, anyone could come along and create a decent interface for them.
Foobar isn't open source, see here

But anyway, you're right. It's not easy to learn to get around with it. It takes a lot of time, reading the hydrogen forum, wiki's and other pages. It's a poweruser program & you've got to love fiddling around with it.
That certainly does look like a opensource license to me, just because it's not GPL crap doesn't mean it's not open...

Really? Where's the source then?
