General Software Discussion / Desktop Icon/Folder Corral Utility Needed

I'm trying to figure out some ways of organizing my desktop that contains lots of files, shortcuts to folders, shortcuts to programs.

This has sort of been discussed before but not quite what I have in mind.

I'm looking for a Desktop Icon Utility/Launchbar that would (hopefully) do some/all of the following.

IconCorrals - free floating icon toolbar/corrals that could be set up to show a number of icon w/ or without text labels. WXP free floating toolbar sort of works but too often disappears or moves around and isn't really reliable. Ideally the icons could be set to any size using appropriate links to image files and the corral size and location could be locked. Idea is to be able to put program or command line shortcuts into theme specific "areas" - ie music area, backup area, database reports area. I know I could use something like FARR but my mind is more visually oriented...

FolderCorral - rectangular area that could be locked for size and location, containing folders or shortcuts to folders - allow drag and drop of files for copying or moving. Moving the cursor over the folder would pop up a folder/list/icon view from which you could click to select and open/act on a file/shortcut.

Corrals could be edited/modified by dragging and dropping program or folder shortcuts or folders.

Do my ramblings make sense? Does anyone have any suggestions for something that would help me get a handle on my messy virtual desktop?

General Software Discussion / Program to Monitor Size of Specific Directories?

I'm looking for a program/utility/widget that monitors the size of a (number of) directories and notifies the user when a preset size limit is reached. I can't believe noone has come up with something like this (ot more to the point, I can believe that I just haven't put in the right search terms so far).

Need/Concept is as follows:

I have a couple of unsophisticated users that have automatic or semi-automatic backup procedures enabled. The backup program writes zip files to a number of directories that I would like to have the users burn to CD or DVD when there is a reasonable amt of data to burn. What I would like to find is a program that runs in the background and monitors 1-5 directories and checks their size against a specified size. If the directory reaches (say) 75% of specified size a warning would show up on the desktop (say a yellow flashing light), if the size is larger than the limit a red warning flashes.

There was a Yahoo widget program of a similar concept but the directories were hard coded, and size limits weren't changeable - it would be nice to be able to set specific locations and custom sizes.

Any one have any suggestions or solutions in mind?

worked perfectly, at least with 2 folders, will try the 1500 folder, full library test tomorrow!

e:\My Documents\copy.bat "%NO\folder.jpg" "E:\desktop\test\%NO.jpg"   <----working command line

this brings up another idea how the program could be used

I have a number of arbitrarily named folders that contain a multi part rar file of unknown name with associated multiple par files

upon dropping folder(s) I would like to execute Quickpar to check and repair the rar files and then extract the rar file to a specific directory

I think this goes back to the recent feature request on how to filter to a specific file

would need to execute Quickpar or similar program on a _Single_ par file (any 1 only)

then would have to execute WinRar on the single rar file in the directory

has anyone looking in tried something like this.

awesome response time!

tried xxcopy but it wanted to make folders, copy.bat ->   copy %1 %2 sort of works - at least it executes

still hung up on getting the parameters right

e:\desktop\copy.bat E:\desktop\test\folder.jpg E:\desktop\test\junk.jpg  works but isn't particularly useful.

e:\desktop\copy.bat %A\folder.jpg E:\desktop\test\junk.jpg does nothing

e:\desktop\copy.bat %NO\folder.jpg E:\desktop\test\junk.jpg does nothing

any quick suggestions?

as a side request have you ever thought about putting output fields in the program that would show the values of the parameters available or alternately suggest a program or batch file that would take the folder dropped and write some type of output file that would show the exact values of all of the parameters determined from the dropped folder?

Program looks interesting but it I'm finding it hard to get my head around its capabilities.

What I would like to do is as follows

I have an arbitrary number of directories (of mp3s) named Artist-year-Album most of which contain a file named folder.jpg

I would like to drop a bunch/some/all of these directories to D&DR and copy each Artist-year-Album\folder.jpg to an arbitrary directory\Artist-year-Album.jpg.

my first guess at the command line would be    (cmd.exe) copy %A\folder.jpg e:\desktop\test\%A.jpg which doesn't work because the program can't find an exe file in the string but I'm not sure if my understanding of the parameters is correct in any case.

Is my request possible with this program?
