Hello Everybody

Has anyone tried Wuala provided by LaCie?

I found it as a complimentary 10GB free-for-one-year storage subscription supplied with one of the LaCie's external HDD. 2GB they offer for free, more storage is for a fee. Encryption and versioning out of the box; not a cheap though...

Yes, sure, understood :)

So, let's wait until someone will bring the Google+ opportunity to all of us here. Then we can make the DonationCoder circle there and check, how it will supplement this forum if any need for that :D

Yes, when I'll get an invitation from outside of this community, I'll be able to invite anyone here – those who are interested in having such accounts.

Still it would be nice to try Google+ and then form an opinion. Does anyone already have an account there?

During the recent years I used F-Secure Internet Security. Mainly because it was reliable (one should check this from time to time as it is seen now) - it uses few databases from different suppliers including Kaspersky.

That continued till last spring when I got a free copy of Advanced System Protector Pro, which found plenty of threats in my PC running F-Secure.

A bit later I came through this info:
http://www.finjan.com/MCRCblog.aspx?EntryId=2237
and gave a careful look to AVG free. First run after installation - ant it found many more threats - just on a PC running both, F-Secure, and Protector Pro. F-Secure has even "informed" me of some viruses as soon as AVG located them - but after that. Why not before?

Now I use AVG free on all my Windows-based PCs and do not have any problems as it is seen from occasional tests with different AVs or that kind of software.

Java is a pretty decent language, it's good for learning, and there's aspects of it (and it's tools) that I miss in C++.
Yes, that is exactly for the title of this thread:)

This is probably not the best place to discuss of language particularities and support the-never-stop-battle of Java vs. C++, but you can do pretty much "everything" with both languages at a professional level IMHO. Both languages have certain pragmatism and certain (up-to any) degree of freedom depending on what do we develop.

The following stat may tell something for selection of the first programming language:
TIOBE Programming Community Index
Please, don't misinterpret this index, there's a description.

Yes, those and some other tools to start learning Java (or OOA in general) are described here:
Young Developer Learning Path
Teenagers at the age of 13 or even younger can start with Greenfoot.

New to Java Programming Center — Getting Started

With Java you can start with either procedural programming or object-oriented. Both ways have some supporters as well as antagonists. But both are possible.

It is also “easier” to program with Java (means also “easier to start with”). Without any technical details, typical reports from professional programmers are such that they experience some kind of constraints when they migrate from Java to CPP and some kind of relief when they migrate from CPP to Java. Well, those feelings are not permanent, and generally speaking migration is not difficult due to certain language similarities (object-oriented approach, syntax, etc.)

Living Room / Re: Recommend to me the BEST USB stick to get
« on: April 21, 2009, 02:22 AM »
How do I like this site! Just started to consider launching a USB work environment project, and here's a discussion on a main subj.

My list of requirements in order of importance is the following:
1. Performance
2. Durability
3. Size
4. Usability (to my vision, it is a small USB key-chain that is easily detachable for the use-time and "always with me" in my pocket for the rest of time)
5. Compatibility (this is last because I didn't experience any significant problems so far despite my extensive experience with computers)

This form-factor would be the best:
http://www.transcend-uk.com/Products/ModDetail.asp?LangNo=0&ModNo=181
But performance...

Here's the other one:
http://www.kingston.com/flash/dtms.asp?id=2
I'm still not sure of a performance, but as for durability and interoperability... Well, last depends on PC's hardware too

And here:
http://b2b.sony.com/Solutions/product-detail.do?prodId=SEL-M-122709&catId=SEL-yf-dnser-35483
Doesn't look durable though...

This one looks durable:
http://www.pretec.com/epages/Store.storefront/?ObjectPath=/Shops/Store.Pretec/Products/B2UXXX
Still... First, I may lose it (not only near a computer table - I lost my laser pointer key-chain jut because it unscrewed). Second, it may not fit to USB slots of some monitors.

Here's another option:
http://www.corsair.com/_datasheets/CMFUSBMINI-8GB.pdf
It would be nice to see some performance tests.

Those key/coin looking like USB sticks from LaCie:
http://www.lacie.com/products/range.htm?id=10052
are huge to my opinion.

So, the best option is not found so far...

Hi All

Great thanks to all of you for your effort devoted to this thread!

I work with information for years and got very tired of many different software packages I have to use to handle data. Thus I started my personal small research in order to verify the best available options for the note-taking + web-clipping + data/knowledge-management + research-tool software. This is how I came across this thread and was very lucky with it since I found some very interesting ideas here.

So, what is the most resent situation in this area? Do we have any conclusions? Is it a good idea to start round 2?

Here is a nice list of the research tools:
http://www.researchresources.info/

What about the use of semantic technologies, has anyone got any good experience with any applications from the discussion topic that are empowered with those? Those are the technologies (RDF, schemas, ontologies, query languages, etc.) that have their main strength in operations with data (to describe/annotate, link, query, etc.), thus, have to be very valuable for the applications we discuss.

Here are few examples:
•   NEPOMUK Semantic Desktop:
http://nepomuk.semanticdesktop.org/
It is available in two forms, as Java application (cross-platform) and as an integrated part of KDE.
•   Zotero:
http://www.zotero.org/
It is the Firefox extension but not only
•   Hypertext Knowledge Workbench:
http://semanticweb.o..._Knowledge_Workbench
A very young yet project
