Post New Requests Here / Re: Dvorak keyboard converter
« on: February 14, 2007, 04:46 PM »
  Well,
  I'm currently running in Linux, but the context of the question as asked on the PCLinuxOS Forum was like this:
  Somebody was interested in a piece of hardware that would be placed in between the keyboard and the computer?  that would interpret keystrokes from a dvorak keyboard and output them as qwerty and vice-versa.  The OP was thinking along the lines of having two kyboards attached at the same time, and not have to alter the computer settings to use either one or the other.
  To do that in linux, it is required to open the control center, select the hardware configuration tab, select dvorak keyboard in the keyboard options, and exit the control center.
  For windows, this can actually be set up in the "Language and regional options" in the control panel, and as it seems it can also be displayed as a menu already on the taskbar.  Had I looked through a friends windows install earlier I would not have posted this, as it seems that M$ has already provided a solution to this.
  thanks for considering this post, and I'll do a little more research before I post next time.

Post New Requests Here / Dvorak keyboard converter

This is probably one for one of the script machine gurus.  How about creating a script that will change the keyboard layout on Windows from any given language (the default) to dvorak, and back again.
  From recent discussion on another forum, it was asked if there was a Mnufacturer that makes a hardwired keyboard that will allow a user to type dvorak without changing the settings on th computer, but I thought I'd ask here and see if a script was more feasible.

 Some things it should include are:
  Tray Icon with indicator as to which layout is active
  Ability to switch with the mouse, (who can find the ctrl+? for hotkey operation?)
  it would be even better if a per user config could be set up ( so logging into a certain account would trigger the last state for that user, making it transparent almost to non dvorak users)

  A Linux equivalent,  although that's easy for anyone familiar with linux.

Anyway, just an idea.  Hope someone jumps on it.

Active Ports by smartline software is an extremely basic, yet super functional utility.  Shows all relative inf, has a chart of the most commonly intruded upon ports, and their intruders, and lets you boot a connected address quickly.  I highly recommend it.

4
got it hate it.

It's really very slow compared to a xampp install with eGroupware, even on a slow, old machine.
I've been looking for a good groupware app myself, but It's like trying to find a leprauchans pot o' gold.

5
for web based try eGroupware, very user friendly, very configurable.

  Hello mouser, and coders alike,
    First I have to say that I'm sorry for not being around for like the last year and a half,  I switched to using linux, and have been learning that, and some other things and honestly don't have too much use for Windows apps.  I'm not ripping Windows, or Windows coders here, or anything like theat but most of the stuff here just doesn't apply.
   Anyway, to get on with my Idea/Request;
  I've been playing around with SMF 1.1 (Simple Machines Forum, the same version that's used here for this forum.)  And I've come across a very useful add-on package for it called 'Custom Actions'.  What the extension does is it allows an administrator to create a static page based on his choice of either
<? php , [BBC], or <html>  code to be added to their site.  The problem with the software is that the usability is a bit hampered by the design.  In this ;

Notice how small the textarea input box at the bottom is.  It would be much more user friendly if the box was like;

  The files in the supplied archive are in <? php, and .xml and modify the install of SMF to accomodate the panel shown in the first image.
I don't know if the settings for the size of the textarea are in there somewhere or not.  I do not know if the settings are somewhere in the MySql database somewhere, I do however know that Mouser has had his hand in the SMF cookie pot with his awesome mods.  So If anyone would like to see if they can get it to create a larger textarea by default, or as a selection somehow it would be great.

I don't know anything about sliderules, always wished i did, but that's awesome.

Darwin,
  You might want to download a cached copy of the comparison chart from google, or somewhere and shove it back in their face, prefferably one from the day you made your purchase.

9
Tabmix+ is an awesome replacement for tabbrowser preferences and a whole lot less buggy.  Another great extension is- reload every, an extension that reloads any or all given tabs at a specified delay.  This is great for watching your e-bay, or whatnot.

I guess in this case a dictionary program that gave a good definition of "Open Format"

Living Room / Re: Been asked a MILLION times...Internet explorer
« on: December 28, 2005, 06:03 PM »
Hi all,
  Thanks for getting back to me.  I use firefox and the startpage I use is a plugin for firefox called about:bookmarkshome, it uses your bookmarks as a startpage I love it and mom does too, I don't think it's what is doing it, but the more I think about it, it just may be.  I also had installed this plugin on my laptop shortly before I started getting innundated with pop-ups.
  As far as connecting to the internet, it's always on,  cable modem, lan card, little blue "local area connection" screens in system tray at startup and always there.  Do I get pop-ups with IE?  I will never know, that would be the last program I would start on any computer, I don't want to come off as whatever, but I'm very anti-Microsoft, nuff said 'bout that.
  Strangely enough I went to Adelphia's (cable Co.'s) site and they offer a program called Zero Knowledge Freedom Suite, I tried to install it and it ended up making the computer go into a restart loop that wouldn't end, that's gone, thay also recomended housecall, tried to run that and computer locked up and rebooted.
  I believe that there is something going on deep inside this possessed machine that is not being detected.

  Also all updates have been done and are done automatically with windows update.
I'm not really actively seeking a solution to the problem,  I'm hoping it somehow convinces mom to give linux a shot.

Hey mouser,
  I just ran Ad-Aware 6 and came up wit 3 tracking coohies and 2 reg entries re-started and fired up the fox, got three pop-ups,  ugh,   I can't say what I feel and be Politically correct about it.  Will keep searching for an answer.
  Just to clarify, I have High speed through a cable connection and it's always on.  I don't get popups as long as I don't have a browser running.  As soon as I open Firefox I get them.  kind of like Artificial Stupidity, or whatever Micro$... incorporates into their OS.

Hi Forum,
  I have been using Firefox  since 0.85 or so and have recently switched to Linux on my system.  I have installed Firefox on my mothers computer and she is also happy with it, the problem however lies in the XP setup on her system.  After "Disabling Access" to Internet Explorer and never opening it I have a never-ending supply of pop-ups in Explorer windows as soon as I access the internet.
  I've tried to teach mom how to browse wisely, but she is addicted to shopping and "Exciting" websites.  The question is how do I get rid of IE?  I've read that it is unwise to completely remove it but I can't stand it any longer.  I've killed sixteen popups so far just typing this message.  I also googled about it and thought I had hit a good article about ActiveX and removing that.  Is there any benefit to ActiveX?, What does it do?
  I use AVG personal and that runs clean every time it runs, also using CCleaner, Xoftspy,and Starter by codestuff.  I watch open ports with Activeports by smartline and the only programs I find out of normal are something called RAS_DISP.exe that are accessing the internet, but a search of the system turn up no such file.

Any suggestions would be appreciated and SOLUTIONS are most welcome.  I've kind of steered away from an active firewall because I find the training phase might be too much for mom who is not computer savvy and gets easily frustrated with questions she doesn't know how to answer.  Thanks all and Happy New Year.

  While browsing a site that I have read regularly for years, sometime back in June or so I found a link to a site that sounded interesting.  After checking it out I was instantly hooked as are many of you by now.   DonationCoder.com
https://www.donationcoder.com
is my nomination for new site of the year.

  With a friendly user base and an active forum the site is built around people who write code, but as a regular Joe I can say the it makes no difference what your background is all are welcome there.

  Thank you members and guests for a great start here.

**This probably doesn't count, but I just had to.** :Thmbsup:

Cheapest solution I found was to buy a dvd-rw drive that came with the Roxio suite. The exact name of the program escapes me, it too was based on templates, however I found I could control whatever I wanted to do with it like embedding three 30 sec. or whatever Thumbnail-sized clips playing against a static background,  My text, buttons, borders, and layout.  Another nice feature was the ability to have it play  a clip, or a series of clips after a certain amout of idle time, then replace the menu again.

I think it was called pm studio with ez-cd 5 or 6.  I just wiped out my windows partition after deciding to wholeheartedly switch to PCLinux OS.

Theres about 6 dvd authoring progs included with it,  all open source.  Sadly, I haven't tried them out yet (maybe a weekend project)
( I'm not spamming the message board here, just a small plug for Texstar.)

I second the nomination for PCLinuxOS.  I tried the liveCD deal, loved it immediately.  Installed it toHD and still love it.  The only caveat(if that's the right word)  is I needed a hardwired nic card to initially get the synaptic manager to download the madwifi drivers and kernel sources in order to get my wireless card working. Other than that it installed with ease,and is very easy to navigate and configure.

I Like MiniT+, AdBlocker, forcastfox(enhanced),Mass Installer.
I didn't take the time to give links but I get all my extensions at

Living Room / Re: Close the Blog Section?
« on: November 02, 2005, 08:34 PM »
Here's a thought,
  Just a heading for a section of the forum "Drop Box" , or something.  A Place where an inspired member could drop off either an article, or How-To or whatnot and let it be reviewed from there, or all the originating posts there could have a poll attached to them asking where users think they belong, or  if they should be stickied.  This way not only the administrators would get a say, nor have to necessarily take the time to review each separate post and make a decision.    Maybe 25, 100 , 500 or whatever.. votes and the topic is moved, if not by an admin beforehand(at the time of move voting no longer registers). It would be good if the topic itself wasn't moved, but Stickied into the appropriate child board, ie.."Articles","HowTo's","Rants", or whatever,   I don't know if this type of automation exists in the forum software, but I would bet most anything that Skrommel could script it.
 If nothing else a centrally accessible place for members and admins to review and comment on articles, reviews, howTo's and the like would take some of the strain off managing your time. An active topic or really good how-to becomes sticky, or gets sent to a sidebar in the front page, or ends up creating it's own child board, or finally ends up dying out and ends up in a "Top Threads of All Times" locked archive.
  Anyway just a few ideas to play with, I'm rambling now so I'll leave it there and see where it all goes (Oh Yeah, I almost forgot.  Trash Bin should probably not be included in the poll options  ;-)   )

Thanks Carol,
  I've been looking at some Imaging software,   it seems like a good category to have added to the list of requested reviews here at DC.  If I could figure out mousers "preconfigured level 1 template", I might compile som stuff for it.  I found a site I think it's Drive-backup.com ( but don't quote me on it) that has quite a comparison available.  The site recomends Acronis,  but the ability to back up to dvd is a feature I really need along with a self executing image install.  I think I'm going to try out Paragon and take it from there.  One other question I have is that if I use the Imaging method will the image contain the necessary information to use system restore points that I have configured at the present?    Thank you for your input here it seems like we must be alot alike in the respect that we both change our software quite a bit, the biggest problem this presents for me is in the fragmentation department.  I never seem to defragment enough.   It's on the will do list before Imaging I can assure you.
  Thanks again.

Thanks all, one of the questions about slipstreaming that I would like more info on is the types of things that can be slipstreamed.  It seems like the sites I have searched mainly focus on Service Packs and drivers.  Is it possible to slipstream applications pre-installed into the "program Files" directory,start menu and registry as though they were part of the operating system themselves...ie; like putting firefox in place of msie and having the os just accept it as the webbrowser that is available.
  Another thing that I can't seem to get away with is removing msie using XPlite.  There is always something that won't work correctly if it's not there.
 I am working with a laptop with a PIII-800 and 512mb. ram I an kind of leary to install VMware onto it because it just seems as though it would be really slow and tedious to work with, on that note it may be worth it if VMware could make an image that would install onto a partition and not think it was still a VMware system.
  I will check out the links and info suggested and see what I find

I've been interested in creating a custom image of my system,(well, not the current one...more like the Ideal one).
and I have a need for some input.   I'm not sure if  should use a program like BartPE, or if I can slipstream what I want into a bootable setup disk, or if I should start a new partition and set it up according to my wants and then just save it as an image to explode to disk.  Some things I want to include are some can't live withouts, eliminated items pre-eliminated(such as xplite setup) and also a pile of archives I find myself always going back to for specific things.  Any recomendations, suggestions that you wish you'd  had , precautions, advice, or comments would be appreciated.  I hope to use DVD-rom as the media for the endeavor so if anyone has experience with a good program that will build a self installing image to store on DVD that would be a good start.

    Thanks ahead and behind,

Living Room / help with C......
« on: September 25, 2005, 09:29 PM »
I have just installed a linux on my desktop box (pclinuxOS)[ which is really well put together ] and I've been trying to compile an ip updater for dyndns.
the
./configure
part goes ok and shows no errors, but when i run
make
I get the following
gcc  -g -O2  -o ez-ipupdate  ez-ipupdate.o conf_file.o md5.o cache_file.o pid_file.o
conf_file.o(.text+0x270): In function `parse_conf_file':
/root/Desktop/exip/ez-ipupdate-3.0.11b7/conf_file.c:88: undefined reference to `errno'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [ez-ipupdate] Error 1
error encountered
using "kedit" line 88 looks like this
{
      fprintf(stderr, "could not open config file \"%s\":%s\n", fname, error_string);
      return(-1);
    }
I've said it before that I'm no coder so I have also included the conf_file.c as an attachment.(remove the .txt for the raw conf_file.c)
If any of you REALcoders can figure this out and maybe a brief description of what I am actually looking for it would be great.
BTW:  I didn't know where else to turn and this was the only place I could think of, feel free to use the dc messages to reply, or e-mail at [email protected] if the forum isn't the right place to do it. thanks again forum.

i'm pretty sure that "Starter" by codestuff software does what you want, I think it links you to a webpage when you ask it for info on a particular process, or dll, but usefull nonetheless.  Might not be free  I don't remember.
