Living Room / Re: multiple monitors vs large monitor?
« on: January 09, 2012, 09:40 AM »
Hi techidave

I'm just catching up with some of my older emails and I noticed your post via the November newsletter.

I imagine that you've done what you needed, given all of that 'advice' from all of those experts who totally confused me!

I, too, have two 19" monitors right in front of me and the set up is just great.

I also have a widescreen monitor with a newer system but's it's not nearly as good for convenience, even when I use the free and excellent Winsplit Revolution program on it.

In fact Winsplit is also excellent on these two monitors as I can split each monitor in two and have four fairly large screens to manipulate data between.

I hope this has helped but I would imagine it won't make much difference to your (already made?) decision.

Yes, I suppose I can agree with lanux128, mouser.  If/when I'm ready I'll try ascending to a higher level using FARR! :-)
Meanwhile, it'll be my 2nd choice.  You can't please everyone!

Why I prefer Launchy to FARR

•   When I want to update Launchy (or even just to check for updates) I don’t get the DonationCoder Updater Utility Not Found message appearing.

Yes, I suppose it’s there to help me but I don’t want that help.  I just want to know if there is a newer version of the program available and ready for download on the web.

•   When I typed bt.com into Launchy and hit Return it took me to bt.com on the net.  When I typed bt.com into FARR and hit Return it took me to a website that was stored in my My Documents folder.

•   When I type x into Launchy it knows that I want to open Xmind and subsequently puts only that into the suggestion box.  If that wasn’t what I wanted then I could hit my down arrow to access other suggestions.

In FARR I get too many suggestions.  I only want to launch a program.  When I’m in that program I can then decide which files I want to open.

•   Similarly, when I type mo it’ll be there ready with Microsoft Money, whereas if I add an n to make mon it’ll offer MediaMonkey.  It seems to learn what I want to the point where it’s almost intuitive.

•   Launchy is a simple interface with simple Options… not a complicated mess of ‘tweak this’ and ‘tweak that’ to get… whatever!

Why don’t you make a ‘lite’ version that doesn’t have all of those complications?  Then, and only then, if I want to complicate my searching life later on, I can use the full version and go online to the forum and get really confused!

Ok, so maybe some of the above are quite trivial, but you did ask me why I preferred Launchy, Mouser.  :)

Eleman, now you've really got me confused!
I'm not a programmer.  I wouldn't know where to copy and paste the code(?) that you've posted above even if I did think I needed it.
Look, I have 2 monitors and use Winsplit Revolution to manipulate any open window to any of over 26 positions on these screens... all using keyboard shortcuts.  I think that's enough for anyone... unless, of course, they love programming, which turns me off.

OK, Mouser, but give me a few days.  You are the reason why I decided to donate in the first place so I suppose I owe you that.  :-)

As a very keen keyboard shortcut fan I find Launchy brilliant.  It takes 2 keys to open the program and then one or two to find the program that I want to launch.
Before I found Launchy I used FARR, which is very good but not quite up to the Launchy standard.  However, if Launchy won't find a certain file, I can use Launchy to launch FARR and then that generally finds it for me.
Yes, I can agree that remembering keyboard shortcuts can be quite a task in itself but, once you really get to know them, the only time you would need the mouse in Windows XP is when manipulating graphics.
