Actually, the same question applies for specifying a portable external file manager as well.

Find And Run Robot / Custom Document Opener
« on: November 12, 2012, 10:56 PM »
Is there any way to specify that the location of the Custom Document Opener is on the same portable drive as FARR?

Since I'm running FARR portably from a flash drive, to make use of the document opener, I have that on the flash drive as well... but I can't find a way to specify its location.

I tried using %APPDRIVE%\<PATH TO DOCUMENT OPENER> but that didn't work - FARR complains that it couldn't be found.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Find And Run Robot / Re: last window id
« on: February 02, 2010, 05:47 PM »
I watch these forums almost religiously, so how come I have not see this before?!?!?!

:-* I've been wanting exactly this since I first started using FARR.  And it's 100x more important now that Microsoft has butchered the Open/Save dialogs in Windows 7 so badly that I can't easily use the mouse to find anything.

This made my week (and it's only Tuesday!)!  Thank you!!!

Find And Run Robot / FARR Freezes on Second Launch
« on: December 22, 2009, 11:15 AM »
The problem I accidentally reported here (https://www.donation....msg187945#msg187945) has reappeared.  FARR appears ok on the first launch (after I hit Alt+Space, my launch string), but the second time I hit it the program freezes.  I don't have to hit anything other than Alt+Space and the freeze happens as soon as the window appears, before any history is displayed.  So I kill the process, re-start FARR, and it will happen again (always on the second launch) indefinitely until I reboot.

The first time it happened I thought it was an isolated incident, but it seems to be happening on maybe on every 4th or 5th time I start my computer (so seemingly randomly, but repeatedly).  Usually a reboot will fix it - but sometimes it takes two.

Win7 64-bit, FARR 2.80.02.  When this first happened, I disabled all of my plug-ins one by one until there were none left, but it didn't help.

Is there any information I can provide that would help pinpoint the issue?

Thanks!

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: hamNotes (A FARR2 Plugin by hamradio)
« on: November 25, 2009, 12:55 PM »
when listing notes you can right click on one and choose modify.

I know it's available from the context menu, but having to using a mouse seems to defeat the purpose of FARR.  ;)  Was hoping I could type something to accomplish the same thing.

Thanks

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: hamNotes (A FARR2 Plugin by hamradio)
« on: November 24, 2009, 06:53 PM »
I've seen this plugin listed for awhile, but just got around to trying it today - awesome!

When I'm teaching various workshops and need to keep a running list of questions/suggestions/bugs, this will be tremendously handy!

I was looking for a way to edit an existing note though (I can see needing to do that frequently), w/o having to choose edit from the context menu.  Is that possible?  Is there another switch that I'm missing?

Thanks!!

Hey Mouser, it happens - no harm, no foul.   8)

Thanks for the quick fix - this seems to take care of all of the problems I was experiencing!

Hi Mouser,

FYI...  I just installed the new version, but suddenly my user variables no longer work.  I haven't dug too deep yet, I'll try to investigate more.

EDIT:  Well, now I don't know...  some of my user variables are no longer working.  I have a user variable called UtilitiesHome in the [Environment] section of my user variable definitions that references C:\Utilities.  Using %uservar.Environment.UtilitiesHome% in an alias no longer works.  However, a similar reference to C:\Program Files by the ProgramFiles variable in the same [Environment] section seems to work just fine.

I've also noticed that any alias that launches a program brings up a dialog asking which user to run the program as (WinXP, SP3)...  that could get annoying, since I just want them to all run as me (I'm on an admin account... yes, bad form, I know).  Doesn't seem to affect programs that are launched from search though - just aliases.

EDIT 2:  Argh, actually, in order to run as the current user, I have to uncheck the box that says "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity" every time I run it - otherwise it won't launch at all.  Sorry for all of the edits.

9
Do you by chance have an anti-virus program installed on 7 that you didn't on XP?  I haven't played with 7 enough to have seen a difference yet, but I know on XP my anti-virus has this effect...  I've tried both AVG and Avira and they both do it, so I would assume others as well.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Useful firefox extension for FARR users
« on: October 26, 2009, 02:42 PM »
AWESOME, thanks for this!

I constantly find myself doing the same thing you mentioned when I happen to use the awesome bar and it's incredibly frustrating - so this extension will help a lot!

Incidentally I've entirely replaced all of my bookmark keyword searches with FARR now, so that missing feature with this extension is a non-issue.  As a matter of fact, most of the time I hardly use the firefox address bar anyway - it's so much more convenient (even when Firefox is already open) to just Alt+Space (my FARR shortcut) and type in the web address there, then having to remember Ctrl+L in Firefox as well.  Now if only if FARR could integrate Firefox's autocomplete/awesomebar-awesomeness...

Thanks!

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR Request: Sorting Columns in aliases box
« on: September 29, 2009, 12:59 PM »
Sorry, I can't help myself...

It's really a separate issue (I don't mean to hijack the thread here), but it would also be nice to customize which alias shows by default in the drop-down list.  I have a couple of my own alias files that I use frequently, but I think right now it defaults to one of the core aliases, which are un-editable anyway.

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR Request: Sorting Columns in aliases box
« on: September 29, 2009, 12:53 PM »
FWIW...  +1

13
I think the first part of this is an interesting suggestion...   I use the FARRAltTab plug-in already, but it would be a great addition if FARR would seamlessly open the application if it isn't already open.

Maybe another way of putting it...   when the user types "out" to bring up Outlook, FARR searches all open windows to see if the program is already running first and, if so, brings it to the foreground - otherwise, it will open a new instance.  I could see that being useful all the time.

14
Mouser - thanks for the fix on the changing root drive letters in search folders!  Much better now :-)

15
question:
in the search directory entries, do you actually have them listed as "N:\"
or is it more like "N:\Program Files\" , i.e. specifies a directory which also exists on C:.

the reason i ask is that i thought i coded it so that it never reassigned just a plain drive letter.

I only have them listed as M:\ and N:\ - just the root directories/drive letters themselves.

16
Mouser, I've got a couple of TrueCrypt volumes listed in my Search Folders list - drives  M:\ and N:\.  In the last couple of versions (I finally just figured it out today though) I keep losing them...  they all turn into C:\.  Didn't used to happen - but it seems to be an issue now every time I turn off my computer (or maybe just unmount the volumes?  I haven't explored further).

Becoming a real pain to have to re-configure my search folders every time I start my computer...  I'm hoping it'd be an easy fix?

Let me know if you need any more specific information about it.  I'm running 2.60.01 on WinXP SP3 and I think it was happening at least in the version immediately prior to this as well.

Thanks!

UPDATE:  Just figured it out.  Happens not when the volumes become unmounted, but on restart when FARR launches before the TrueCrypt volumes are mounted the first time.  So apparently when FARR launches it looks for the drive letters in Search Folders and if doesn't find them it resets them back to C:\.  Hope that helps.  Thanks again!

17
Mouser, did something change in your very last version with the new delayed search feature and/or the "stop search on exact regex match"?  (I'm not sure which might be causing the problem)

I have an alias called "disable", which had a regex of ^disable (.*)? and it used to work well - I would type "dis", hit tab to complete and life was good (especially since the delayed search was implemented).  Suddenly, now, as soon as I type "dis" the program starts searching (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu specifically, so it says in the status bar) for 3 or 4 seconds before it matches the alias.  I changed the regex to ^(dis|disable) (.*)? to see if it would make any difference, but alas, no.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

PS - is there any place I can download an old version of the program to test against?  I was going to double-check what I said against 2.55.01 to see if something really changed with the version or if something is screwy with my system.

18
Mouser, the new experimental delay is A-W-E-S-O-M-E!     I'm running AVG Anti-Virus on my computer and (from what I've read), that can make FARR pretty slow... and that's really been my experience as well.  Often times I'll begin typing in something and there is a 4-5 second delay after typing the first letter before FARR will recognize anything else I type - but the new delay has fixed that - and it's WONDERFUL!!!

THANK YOU!!!!

19
+1 on the request to implement this  :)

20
hm... you had to put < b > and < / b > as starting and ending chars inside a timer plugin, right? I did not :) Actually there was supposed to be b0 and b1 or similar ;)

To the issue. I will take a look at it ;)

Oh, you're right!!  Sorry, I forgot all about that!

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Request - Ubiquity Plugin for FARR?
« on: January 11, 2009, 02:10 PM »
I searched for Ubiquity, but didn't see this asked anywhere else - hope this isn't a duplicate...

I was reading a post on lifehacker.com today regarding Firefox's TabHunter extension and someone mentioned that Ubiquity would eventually provide the same functionality.  This got me to thinking, it looks like there are a lot of similar cool things that Ubiquity will eventually be able to do, but I don't want a separate launcher just for my browser - I love FARR farr too much!

Does anybody have any idea whether it will be possible to create a Ubiquity plugin, so you could use Ubiquity entirely from within FARR?

22
Do you two have anything in common? Like OS, Special FARR settings, maybe HW? This info would help me to track the bug-

Running FARR on WinXP Home SP3 on a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop.  No particularly fancy hardware or FARR settings that I know of.

If it's helpful, I've included the contents of my FindAndRunRobot.ini file (except search folders, launch history, and past search strings).

(Side note:  are you missing a closing < / b > tag in your Timer plugin settings, or was it intentional?  Before I disabled BBCode in the spoiler, I noticed the bold font from the user variables settings in the ini file was running into my post here.)

Thanks!

Hi czb,

No hurry, I was just trying to provide information to help track down the problem.  Exams are more important anyway!  Good luck!

I'll try the new version and let you know though.  Thanks!

24
Hi czb,

Just for kicks, I updated with the new FSubScript plugin (1.02) and FARR 2.45.01 and I'm still having the same issues as before.  Just an additional note - when I said "lock up" in my previous post, it appears that I can still type in the FARR window, but FARR will no longer *do* anything when I do (no matching or anything), no matter what I type.  I need to kill it/restart it before it will.

I also just tried the Timer plugin and am having difficulty getting that to work as well.  I hadn't tried it before so I don't know if this is a new issue or not.  (I got a good chuckle out of "Crazy American?" in the settings window though! ;D)  I get the following error when I type "tm"...

tmerror.gif

I can start a new thread for that if you want...  didn't want to clutter the forum with new posts if you already knew what the issue was.

Thanks again for your plugins, I'm looking forward to using them!

Related to PuTTY (maybe helpful?)...   I know it's not exactly what was requested, but I've had good luck with using KiTTY (http://kitty.9bis.com/) as an alternative to PuTTY.  The program has a bunch of handy features that the original PuTTY lacks, including auto-login.  One of its other options is that there is a built-in portable mode (although you have to specify it in the kitty.ini file) (more info here), so session configurations are saved to text files instead of the registry.  Perhaps it would be easier to create a plugin that could parse those text files instead of the registry for session info?
