Hi Mouser,

When updating via DCupdater it seems to be successful except that the previous version of the dll is not replaced; the meta files are, so DCUpdater seems to think has updated but FARR clearly shows the previous version.  I've only just noticed, but it has happened on two of the PCs I've just checked, one Windows 8.1 x64 and one Server 2012 R2.

I also noticed I needed to close FARR to update the .dll which the updater did not seem to do.

One I've found, although it's not free: PhotoSort <http://www.asmdev.ne.../products/photosort/>

I use this myself and it is quite good - it has support for various RAW images and is quite easy to use.

Another freeware alternative: NetMeter http://www.metal-machine.de/readerror/

I use it at home and work and it seems quite light on system resources.

General Software Discussion / Re: Download Demons...
« on: December 27, 2007, 05:22 PM »
Hi,

I tend to use a download manager to either grab a large batch of links (e.g. a multi part download listed on a forum in separate parts, all pictures/files/etc on current page, etc.) or to import a url list which can save a lot of time if someone has precompiled a list.  D/l managers are also useful if you have restrictions on your line and want to schedule downloads for later or if you want to set a speed or data transfer limit.  Segmenting does still help if you get a slow server and you are not reaching your line max.  You can also redownload already downloaded files - which can be easier if you downloaded something when you have 20 tabs open and forgot where you got it from!

I used Getright for many years although I have tried others like FDM, Stardownloader, HiDownload.  I found that (when I last tried them) the free ones either lacked a feature I wanted, were not stable enough to use or did not integrate well into my current browser so I usually went back to Getright.  I stopped using Getright recently due to the number of crashes I was getting with the newer versions and various bugs with the file names and download urls.  I am now using IDM (http://www.internetdownloadmanager.com/).  IDM seems to have reasonable low resource usage and the interface is quite clean without too many non-essentials.  It doesn't have all of Getright's features but for what I use it for it is nearly perfect.

IDM Pro's:

  • very stable (or at least i have yet to have any crashes and have downloaded 1000's of files without issue.  It is set to download 4 things at a time plus segments + a virus scan when finished)
  • reasonable resource usage
  • clean interface
  • d/l speed limiting
  • scheduling
  • site grabber
  • authenticated site access
  • seems to work on the majority of download sites and it is working perfect with my Rapidshare.com account (premium)

IDM Con's:

  • cost around US $30 which you might consider to high
  • no support forum
  • web page could be better but you can use IDM in trial mode
  • icons could be better but I would rather have lower resource usage than skins.

Currently I'm using IDM with Firefox.  I also use the Flashgot plugin - which sends links to a d/l manager.  It has some useful functions such as grabbing only the selected links from the page.

General Software Discussion / Re: 'Number of days to date' program?

Typical!

I guess if you get the wrong keywords on your search you missing things...or if you don't read software lists carefully!!! :-[

To tinjaw:  Seems to be basically what I'm looking for but:  Main problem at the moment is that I get a -1 no matter what I enter.  I check the bug tracker and see you fixed that in version 0.0.0.9 but the only version I keep getting from the download link is version 0.0.0.7 (right-click->properties->version tab), the SHA-1 is:C9B55EB8FC7DF752A12C246B9B8CF67C3A8752C4.  I've tried downloading it a few times with the same result.

Also this version seems to close with an error if I have nothing highlighted and press delete:

---------------------------
AutoIt Error
---------------------------
Line -1:

Error: Array variable has incorrect number of subscripts or subscript dimension range exceeded.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

This also seems to happen on the 'days to' display if you click the remove/reset buttons with nothing highlighted.

Also few feature requests if possible (sorry if they've been mentioned before):

  • Having the program start with the Days To display and only having the current start screen if you edit or add (perhaps on a right-click).
  • Make it so you can have it minimized on startup/or the above (so it shows the dayto)
  • Have recurring entries, i.e. no year just day/month - so it never says time since just days to next date.  Useful for birthdays or bills, etc.

Thanks for considering these,

General Software Discussion / 'Number of days to date' program?
« on: December 27, 2007, 11:16 AM »
Hi all,

Does anyone know of an program which calculates the days to a specific date or dates AND can give you a list of all the events displayed in a single view?

I'm currently using DaysTo(GO) (http://www.1newmessage.com/PC/main.asp) on my mobile phone.  It is quite usefull for managing software subscriptions, birthdays, etc.  It also is nice to have a list display rather than having to set a reminder or go to a specific day (so you can just glance at the list and see you have x days before that particular event).  The company have a PC version but it seems very large for the job it does, has a poor registration system (locked to a single pc) and would not run after I installed it into a virtual pc.

I would like a portable and free program but I don't mind paying for something if it works.

I have tried search for a program to do this but I could only find simple programs to calculate between 2 dates or which are much more complex and overkill (e.g. Ultimate Date Calculator).  I have though of using a spreadsheet but would prefer a seperate program...although if anyone knows of an Excel template which already does this it would be at least a useful temporary solution.

Thanks for any reply,
