however you have other options if you dont' want to remove the hd.
you could boot with a rescue disk (bartpe cd or ultimate boot disk or something similar), which would let you get to your files.  but then to copy them off your hard drive you would need a usb stick or an external usb drive.

Hi,

I found this link. I guess I am going to try the Knoppix. But before that I think I need to know how to change the BIOS settings.

At present I don't see anything coming up on my screen which would allow me to go into the BIOS Settings.

When I insert my XP installation CD following scrrens appear on my IBM ThinkPad:

1) To interrupt normal setup press Access IBM button or press enter key
2) On black screen - Press any key to boot from CD
3) On blue screen - Set up is being restarted

When I am not using any CD then it I see 1 and 3.

So I would like to know if I am anywhere near where I can go to the BIOS Settings.

wow well that's great news -- i see from the box image that it does indeed support 2.5" notebook hard drives.

you know i have 2 external usb ide enclosures and a sata enclosure, but for some reason it never occurred to me that there would be a connector to connect the 2.5" laptop drives.

for $20, anyone who uses a notebook should buy one of these for an emergency drive recovery should you ever have the need.  great find.

Do I have to remove the HDD from the laptop to do this?

Hey Guys,

Ok now I tried to go into the Safe Mode but it gives me a message that Windows cannot start in Safe Mode. May be this happens b'se previously I tried to repair the Windows XP where the new windows installtion was being halted by physical memory dump.

So what can I do now.

I guess I need to follow this link. Please re-confirm.

Yes I can go into Safe Mode. So what do I do next. My laptop is heating up and shuts off. Tomm I will log in with a fan running near my laptop to keep it cool and then follow your instructions further.

I hope we will be able to resolve this issue. I desperately need to restore my laptop or atleast get a back up for it.

I had tried to use a new webcam from TriQuest and when I used the CD which came with it my laptop went into physical sump. So now I repaired my XP Professional and when the set-up tries to install the Windows at the following screen "MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT JUST GOT BETTER...." my laptop goes to physical memory dump and gives me the following error. It starts the dump at this same screen. I tried 2-3 times.

STOP : 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x00000000, 0xF78EE7A0, 0xF78EE4A0)

As far as I think, I need to remove that specific driver from my laptop but the thing is I cannot get my laptop started at all.

I don't want to send it to IBM b'se it is still under warranty b'se I know they will just install new XP and all my data would be gone. Or is there is a way to get a back up for my HDD then probably I can send it.

Please help me.
