Web Link Captor / Malware Bytes thinks this is ransomware
« on: October 20, 2018, 11:38 PM »
I was just using Web Link Captor to compile reviews of a list of PS4 games, and Malware Bytes blocked the program as ransomware.  I had just downloaded Web Link Captor from here a few minutes before this happened.

I've included the details from Malware Bytes below.

Let me know if there is any more information you need.

I am looking for a simple text editor that auto-saves and closes with a single hotkey combination.

I want to hook this editor to mercurial so whenever I do a commit the editor pops up, I can type my commit message, and then I can hit Ctrl+Enter (or something like that) to auto-save and close the editor to complete the commit.

Ideally, the editor would have word-wrap, the ability to use the mouse to select text, and copy/cut/paste functionality.

I know you can put your commit message into the command line, but I tend to write lengthy commits, so I would prefer to be in a text editor of some kind.

Edit: I'm looking for this in Windows

Developer's Corner / Rewriting work for hire after the fact...
« on: September 18, 2014, 12:00 AM »
I recently found myself in the position of writing a small amount of code as an independent contractor.  This code interfaces with a popular platform used by specific academic researchers to provide missing functionality.

Obviously, the code I am producing is "work for hire" and therefore the property of the body that hired me.

While researching the problem, I found that a huge number of people out there want/need the functionality I coded.

So...

The code I am producing under my current contract is written in PHP and uses a MySQL database.

If, after this project is done and I get paid, could I rewrite this in a completely different manner and sell it?

For example, could I create the same functionality in, say, Python or Ruby with a nosql database and then market it as a different product?

I guess the question is this... they clearly own the code I wrote for them... but do they own the ideas I had to solve the problem?

I am in charge of posting weekly church documents on our website.

I fell a little behind this week and am only just now getting to the documents that need to be up by tomorrow.

Our secretary refuses to use anything other than WordPerfect.  Usually she sends both the WordPerfect file and a pdf that she has generated.  This week, she left off the pdf file.

I have tried doing the conversion through Google Docs, MS Word 2010, Libre Office, and an online service and all either mangled the layout or refused to even try to open the file.  Word and the online service say the file is corrupt, however they say the same thing on other WordPerfect documents I have received from the secretary as well.

Can anyone help me out?

I have attached a zip file with both the wpd file (Easter 2 - April 27 2014.wpd) and a pdf from a past week (March-09-2014-Lent1.pdf).

The reason for the past week is so that you can see that things always look a little odd with part of the decorative font on the front page and large blank spots throughout the file (supposedly due to copyright concerns).  In theory, it should be easy to get a PDF that looks somewhat like the March-09-2014-Lent1.pdf file from the wpd file.

I would just put up the slightly mangled version Google Docs can give me, but I just know someone will get upset about it (you know how us church people can be  :wallbash: )

Thanks!

Carl

Linode is giving away $100 in credit for all new accounts to use towards any of their outstanding VPS plans.

Existing users can add a linode to their account and get 3 months free.

In all, they will be giving away $250,000 worth of credit, and it just started at 12:00 noon EST.  As of now, they are still reporting over $200,000 in credit remaining.

For both new and existing customers, you have to pay for the end of June and through July, then the credit for new accounts or 3 months of free service for exiting accounts is applied.

I have been with Linode since 2009 and have never had any issues at all.

They are an unmanaged VPS provider, however, so you have to administer your server on your own or pay someone to do it.

If you are interested in taking advantage of this offer and are a new user, I would greatly appreciate it if you would use my referral link http://www.linode.co...e739c7b9109446a64f40

If you don't want to use the referral link, then just head on over to their page with this link: http://linode.com

They are getting hammered right now, so it may take some time for pages to load and whatnot.

My wife and I spent 7 hours today fighting with Microsoft Word 2010 as we attempted to get her dissertation into the specific, random-ass, ever-changing format that her university requires for final submission and publication.

Word's more impressive moves included:

  • Deciding to liberally and randomly sprinkle sub- and super-script formatting throughout her endnotes.
  • The "section break jumble" every single time we saved the document.
  • Completely corrupting half the references section with random garbage after a save.
  • Insisting that we use quadruple space on one single page of the document.
  • Regularly ignoring specified pages when printing small portions to attempt to fix pagination issues caused by Word.
  • Turing on Windows' built in Text-to-Speech just in time to capture a bevy of full-on, modernist, William-Faulkner-would-be-proud stream of consciousness profanity.  Oddly enough, it got most of the more colorful words right and failed miserably on everything else.
  • BSODing both my desktop and her laptop when trying to use the built in Save to PDF function.
  • When not BSODing, telling us "File Not Found" when trying to use the built in Save to PDF function.
  • Generating over 300 pages of margin to margin garbage text when using the full version of Adobe Acrobat 9 to create the required PDF.
  • Replacing her name with my name in the document metadata when we tried to use no less than 3 other PDF generators.

Seriously, Word, what the hell?  What did we do to deserve that?  I defend you - you and Excel and Powerpoint and even Windows.  And this is how you repay us?

The registrar I have used for as long as I've been buying domains (gkg.net) runs at $10.89 including ICANN fees.

I am looking to buy a couple more .com domains, and I would like to save as much money as possible, while making sure that I am using a reputable registrar that isn't going to hold my domains hostage, screw up my settings, or squat of domains that I search for.

I don't need hosting of any kind to go with the domains.

Who are you using for your domain needs?

Thanks!

I bought a D-Link NAS from NewEgg last month.  On the page for the NAS, they recommended that I purchase 2TB Western Digital Caviar Green HDs to install in the NAS.  I went ahead and bought the drives, because they were a good price, low heat production/energy use, I have always had luck with WD drives, and because NewEgg recommended them.

The items arrived yesterday, and I tried in vain to get the thing set up in a RAID 1 configuration.  After multiple failures, I finally found a posting from the manufacturer of the NAS that states that the specific model of hard drive that NewEgg recommended that I purchase along with the NAS is explicitly not supported by the manufacturer.

As NewEgg sold me the drives specifically to use in the NAS I purchased, I have emailed them to ask for a refund so I can purchase compatible drives.  I have yet to hear back from them (nearing 24 hours since I emailed them), but I am worried that their return policy is going to cause problems.  Specifically, their policy states that all refund requests are subject to a 15% restocking fee.  Also, the installation procedure for the drives involves sliding them past metal tabs into the enclosure.  This caused long scratches spanning the entire length of the drive.  As there is clearly physical damage to the metal, label-side of the drives, I am worried that NewEgg will deny any return at all since their policy states that they will not accept products with physical damage.

So, should the retailer refund the purchase since it was made on their faulty recommendation?  What about that 15% restocking fee?  It's not like I changed my mind after using the items.  Since the damage was caused by installing the drives into the enclosure that was part of the recommended package, should they still accept them even though they are scratched?  Does it make a difference that the recommendation came from an automated system rather than a salesperson making an honest mistake?

What are your thoughts on the matter?

Living Room / Charities
« on: May 07, 2011, 01:58 AM »
If you make monetary donations to charity, please consider voting.  If you are so inclined, share more specific information in a post (though please don't feel compelled to go into detail if you would prefer not to).  I am simply curious as to the habits of the users here on DonationCoder.  The nature of this website attracts individuals who are willing to share their monetary resources with others, so I am interested in how that extends beyond what we do here on DC.

The extent to which I might ever use the data from this poll would be a future blog post that would read something like, "Of the people who voted in a poll I ran on a popular website's message board, 50% indicated that they donated when a specific need such as an earthquake arose."  Nothing more specific than that, and I promise not to specifically refer to any posted responses unless I have directly contacted the individual and received permission to do so.  I doubt any need to be specific unless someone shares something really interesting about their poll response.  That being said, I am not planning any particular blog post at this time.

I recognize that this is an informal poll and would carry no weight as part of a larger study or academic research.

And, while I fully support everything that DonationCoder.com does, I am not talking about those kinds of donations here :).

DC Gamer Club / I have StarCraft 2 and WoW guest passes available
« on: September 15, 2010, 08:52 AM »
I have 2 StarCraft 2 Guest Passes that give you 7 hours or 14 days of game time (whichever comes first).  Registration with BattleNet and download of the game client is required.

I also have 2 World of Warcraft Guest Passes that are each good for 10 days of game time.  Again, registration and download of client is required.

I want to give out the passes to someone who is a supporting/honorary member of DC or someone who has a few quality posts under their belt as a participant.

If you came across this thread from a google search for guest passes, feel free to request a pass, but I will wait to see if any users who fulfill the above qualifications want them first.  Of course, if you start participating in the forum after requesting, then you have a good chance :)

Edited to say 1 pass per user.

Zoner has a buy 1 license get 1 license free deal on their newest Photo Studio Professional that was sent out to people on their mailing list.  They specifically state that the extra license is great to give to a friend or family member.  They are also allowing additional coupons to be applied.  With all that, I can get 2 licenses for $49.99 USD.  Would anyone be interested in going in with me so we can split the licenses and the cost (meaning $25 each)?  PM me and we can make arrangements through PayPal.

Deal has already been done with NigelH

Screenshot Captor / Hallelujah - Scanning Functionality
« on: July 29, 2009, 07:47 PM »
Didn't want this to get lost in the other thread with all that serious discussion...

I usually hate having to do scans, since it means running the software that came with the scanner.  It takes forever to load, even longer to scan, and requires about 5 steps to get each scan from the bed to a usable file.  It's annoying, slow, and painful.  Of course, I know how to do it, and its what I've been using for nearly 2 years.  Occasionally I'll try something else which claims to be better, and I get frustrated because I don't know the program and give up.  I rarely fire up the scanner, so it's too much trouble to learn a new program.

Yesterday, I found myself needing to scan some receipts for insurance purposes.  Since I have some free time these days (teacher + summer = nice), I decided to try a new program.  Lo and behold, Screenshot Captor now has scanning functionality.  Now, I will admit, sheepishly, that I am a SnagIt user.  It's hard not to be when you have legal access to a SnagIt/Camtasia bundled license for less than $50  So I loaded up Screenshot Captor, and got ready to learn how to do scanning with a new program.  10 minutes in, I hadn't figured it out.  Then I decided to RTFM, and realized that I needed to turn on scanning in the options.  Less than 5 minutes later, I had my first scan completed.  Then another.  Then a third, and suddenly visions of a paperless office began dancing in my head.  SC was fast and easy.  Two clicks and I had an image I could be proud of.  Ten minutes later I was done with the insurance documents.

Did I stop there?  No!  I grabbed a stack of photographs (yeah, I know, who uses film anymore?) and started scanning.  SC seemed to get better images without any tweaking than my old scanner software did after fiddling with sliders and dials for an hour.  Before I knew it wedding pictures, teaching certificates, medical records, and notes had all been scanned.  A quick add of an external tool, and now even my text scans can be sent over to OmniPage with just a flick of my wrist and a click of my finger!

Needless to say, I have replaced the bloated, slow software that came with my scanner, and now I am a SC user.

Three cheers for mouser!
