General Software Discussion / search engine plug DDG

I recommend Duck Duck Go as a search engine. It is fun to use, not too complicated and you can set preferences like 'Web Of Trust' icons.

Living Room / Slacker radio service
« on: February 27, 2011, 12:58 PM »
One online radio source, www.slacker.com/, has added several new
Latin stations recently. In the US they are; Spanish, Spanish Pop,
Tropical, Regional Mexican, Reggaeton/Hip Hop, Rock En Espanol.

After signup in Canada, the list reverts to Spanish but there is a
work-around by googling to find stations playing, for example, some
Mexican music such as the 'Mazz' station on Slacker. Bookmark
the station, visit it, sign in through Slacker and Slacker will remember
your selection in the 'Recently Played' section.

I like some very specific music genres and I'm off to find them:
- Mexican Norteno influenced by Tex-Mex
- Early blues, only Delta/Louisiana style, with Texas influences
- Traditional Scottish country dance music
- Chamber and Baroque, especially harpsichord and organ
- New Zealand Maori influenced by gospel
- Traditional Hungarian Gypsy. Anyone know if there is a copy online
of "La petite salle blanche"?
Any tips about sources would be deeply appreciated.

Cheers

Reference of file and file contents tagging methods and ideas. Methods for
photos/images, MP3/audio, HTML and 'cloud' are not emphasized. Tag is
used as equivalent to label or keyword. File retrieval by tag from a list,
separate file, database, 'tree'/folder structure and filters are mentioned in
the sources.  The title and part of the source URL should allow searches.

This solves an email problem I have had: how to keep my actual email address private while still communicating information.
www.akapost.com I did not want to post my email address on forums and message boards but I wanted to send information to some posters without replying publicly to their posts. An example post was asking for the names of their ancestors' parents. Many forums send messages on, without divulging the recipient's address, but I wanted the poster to be able to contact me to get more information, and still stay safe. It should make filtering emails or deleting some at the source easier.

Living Room / found safer payment method?
« on: August 20, 2009, 02:46 PM »
I've been looking for a safer way to pay for online purchases for about three years. Yesterday I was told about a way that looks good and, since a Google search turned up a relatively small number of hits, I thought I'd pass it along. The name in the URL is vanillamastercard. It is a prepaid card in $25, $50 and $100 amounts and the site seems to say you can give as little as your zip code or postal code for the seller to check for confirmation. You seem to be able to also supply your address or name or email address and that reads like it is optional. The 'https' site is a bit tricky to locate but there are links to it on other sites that describe it. Cheers, sword

Living Room / CD/DVD burning service vs download
« on: November 29, 2005, 02:44 PM »
I've had some great service recently from some folks who offer a CD/DVD burning service. In the past I could only get three out of four from 1) wide selection, 2) reasonable price, 3) fast delivery, 4) pay using PayPal. On-Disk has it all making copies from URLs you supply. http://on-disk.com/request.php

Living Room / Flowchart and Diagramming Review
« on: October 26, 2005, 04:24 PM »
I'd like to try to add a bit, if possible, to something in a Flowchart/Diagram section with more details in the diagram section. I'm willing to try a bit of a summary or overview but I don't feel anywhere near qualified to do a complete review. I know almost nothing about most of the high priced and recently released apps. Let me know where to contribute if possible. sword
