Living Room / Intercepted Email?
« on: February 27, 2017, 09:04 AM »
I suppose there are malicious programs for everything these days. :-\

Changing providers, addresses, passwords... does nothing.

Just use 1 laptop and no cell phone.

Any suggestions?

Living Room / DonationCoder Down?

Google Chrome couldn't connect to DC yesterday.  :(

This non-connection happened around 12 pm Florida time... or around 5 pm in the UK.

Seems to be back to 'normal' today.  :)

Just wondering if anyone else couldn't connect yesterday.  :tellme:

Living Room / Faster computer?
« on: January 14, 2017, 07:39 AM »
Can switching browsers speed-up your machine?

I downloaded Chrome and made it the default during installation... but what else changed?

Now my machine seems to startup faster and perform better... or is this just wishful thinking?

I guess this could also be a sign that my old IE9 was highjacked?   :tellme:

Could a cell phone, or a tablet, be used to defrag a flash-drive?

Similar to using a separate VHS rewinder instead of the VHS recorder?

Living Room / Any lawyers here?
« on: October 08, 2016, 11:13 AM »
Supposedly a 50 yr. old Florida woman died of a heart attack and her death was attributed to Hurricane Matthew.

If this woman was my mom or relative and she panicked easily, like my mom did, I'd be blaming The Weather Cannel for her death.

IMO Their undue hype about 'possible' dangers were very misleading.  Trying to make things seem worse than they really are or were.
Preying on people who've never been through one.

Couldn't TWC be held accountable for this woman's death?

P.S.  The Bahamas-roof-lift-off video was shown again and again.  The roof-half came up like a post Wilma DIY project.  Like it was held on by gravity.

FWIW  Matthew was a strong storm when it was offshore of Ft. Lauderdale.  But the keyword here is offshore.  About 40 friggin' miles offshore.
Too far to cause any 'possible' death or destruction.  There were wind gusts here and there but you had to be outdoors to notice.
The small amount of rain was vertical and more of a sprinkle.  No flooding. No floating cars. No reason to panic or run away.  No loss of power; didn't even blink.

"We will fight on the beaches: Britain's war with rogue killer seagulls"  http://www.msn.com/e...ar-AAdzN4z?ocid=iehp
gulls n fries.jpg

A visit to a traditional British seaside town is usually a fairly safe and relaxing, if uneventful way, to spend the summer.

But, in recent weeks a threat to that tranquililty has emerged. Not the weather. Not even soggy fish and chips. Something altogether more menacing: rogue seagulls.

This month, the British media has been filled with accounts of increasingly violent behavior from gangs of gulls. The Daily Telegraph warned of "killer seagulls," "more interested in blood than bacon sarnies [sandwiches]." The Daily Mail reported that "packs of birds" had begun to "target women" to get food. London's Metro had an even greater threat on its mind: Seagulls could "start killing babies if we’re not careful."

On my part of the planet, S Florida, gulls 'target' any possible food source.  They don't fly or hunt in 'packs'.
They basically just fly near each other, like cars on a freeway, scanning for food.
They are rogues, compared to most other birds, possibly because they seem to 'hunt' separately-together.

Maybe we could ship our Killer Dentist over there... with some bird-shot?   ;D

Living Room / Alien washes up on NJ beach
« on: June 24, 2015, 11:12 AM »
This reads like a tabloid headline.

A potentially deadly jellyfish-like sea creature washed up on a New Jersey beach over the weekend, officials said.

Isn't almost anything potentially deadly?

Portuguese man o' war, floating around, is seasonal in S. Florida.
And they could be deadly, I guess, if the tentacles got wrapped around your upper thighs or got in your mouth.   :o

Its nasty sting is excruciatingly painful...

Yes, very painful and lasts around 30 minutes.  With paralyzing and numbing as well.

Living Room / MBAM scans freeze computer
« on: June 11, 2015, 10:31 AM »
The freezes began after installing MBAM v2.1.6.1022. Old version worked fine.

Scans begin then the freeze happens. Everything stops. Looks like a full-screen-capture.

It lasts around 11 minutes, then scan resumes and the machine becomes usable again. (i.e. USB mouse, desktop clock, etc.)

Anyone else have or seen this?   :tellme:

Your post reminded me to ask about this.  Would it be possible to adjust the way a preview looks?

To show it moved to the right, or condensed, so as to display how it will be when posted?

To allow for the yellow portion below?

Living Room / Cell Phone Questions
« on: February 14, 2015, 12:28 PM »
Are there phones that can be used only when necessary?  Like if my vehicle dies unexpectedly?

I have heard of pay-as-you-go but is this a specific phone, brand or service?

Does one get charged for incoming calls?

Are there bare-bones phones?  No camera, no touchscreen, just a phone?

Having never had or used one I thought I would try to gain some knowledge before shopping around.

......................

FWIT:  My ride has died unexpectedly twice so far but was fortunate, both times, to be very close to an auto-repair shop.
BTW:  Still don't have any CDs, DVDs, players, etc.   ;D

Living Room / Britain gives go-ahead to test driverless cars on roads

Quote:

"Britons will from next summer be joined on the roads by driverless cars, after the government gave the go-ahead for the vehicles to be tested on public roads in a bid to encourage companies developing the technology to invest in the country."

I presume the US has had this for decades... ever since the CB radio craze?  :'(  Not much difference between no driver and one that's preoccupied.

That's a big 10-4 .. Good bu-CRASH!

Living Room / Do Not Call List
« on: January 22, 2015, 09:26 AM »
Persons being on a 'Do Not Call List' apparently means nothing to some companies.  Dish Network to name one.

"The court found Dish liable for 4,094,099 calls it or its vendors made to numbers on the Registry and for 2,730,842 calls its retailers made to numbers on the Registry," said the FTC.

Living Room / Anyone here use Emsisoft Anti-Malware?
« on: December 06, 2014, 01:07 PM »
Bleeping Computer seems to really like Emsisoft Anti-Malware but I'm not so sure.

Yes... it found 9 items but could only 'clean' 5... suggesting I visit their forum where i would receive *free* assistance removing the other 4.
This doesn't sound very favorable does it?   :tellme:

Sure looks friendlier.  This is v2.4 so maybe it's a touch-screen version?
I don't recall some of these features... but it's much easier to use.  :)

Living Room / The Emergency Broadcast System ?
« on: October 28, 2014, 07:38 AM »
In the US the Emergency Broadcast System *tests* have been around since the old duck-and-cover days and equally useful... IMO.  Teats on a boar?  :-\

Useless or not... shouldn't there be an Internet version as well?  Where most eye balls are these days?

Maybe an annoying crawler that can be stopped or turned off?

Living Room / A cat lovers experience...
« on: October 26, 2014, 12:01 PM »
Sorry for your loss Mouser.  The passing of a best bud is always difficult.  I'll miss Crabby when she desides to leave. (most things are up to her)   ;D
Although 18 years is considered elderly... some live over 20.  I attribute this longevity mostly to proper diet.

---------------------

I didn't want to clog Saffrons thread with my blog.

NOTE: I am not a vet or even a doctor; this is just my past experience with 3 indoor cats.

My first cat passed at age 2 from kidney disease.  Smokey was a purebred Persian.  There were known health issues with Persians including kidneys.
The vet said feeding her only canned food may have weakened her system as well.  After-the-fact advice always sucks.  >:(  Sorry Smokey

Squeeky left after 17 years (from boredom i think).  She was an abandoned stray kitten.  We met when she was about 6 hr old.
Dry cat food with an occasional soft-treat.  I used a very basic auto-feeder (bad idea).  She became 22 pounds of fur and bad attitude.
She may have lived longer if I hadn't used the auto-feeder.  :(  Like some humans... she ate when she was bored.  Sorry Squeeky

Finally there's the crab.  Crabby is 19.  Crabby is 10.  She was an abandoned stray kitten as well and we met when she was about 1 day old.
No auto-feeder and dry cat food only.  She's a lean mean couch potato.  She gets fed 1 cup, whenever her bowl is empty, about every two days.
She also gets some stuff i eat.  :-[  Assorted meats, processed cheese, ice cream and an occasional 1/4 cup of 2%.

No shortcuts with Crabby but she seems to know what's good and what isn't.  At times I'll trash some of my food that she won't eat.
No auto-water either.  She plays with the water, splashing all over the place, until the gallon's empty.   :-\

---------------

For those who may want to switch to dry food...

Always make a change in diet gradual - per several days at least and sometimes over a few weeks if your cat is fussy.

Start by mixing a very small amount of the new food with your cats old food, and make sure it is well mixed.

Only increase the amount of the new food slowly.

Living Room / Hackers vs. gray matter

Hackers or the ones that use the stolen info seem to lack the basics when using what they have.

i.e. This Postal Notification I got today from FedEx...   ;D

Ever since the Avast Forum was hacked I've been getting some really comical stuff.   :)

Living Room / Avast is vulnerable?
« on: July 07, 2014, 10:33 AM »
Avast Internet Security seems to be vulnerable to attack and takeover** but also act like nothing is wrong.  I presume this problem would also be present with any version including the free one. Yesterday I ran this free Kaspersky scan  http://usa.kaspersky...scan?ICID=INT1676497 and found out Avast was somehow compromised. The firewall, and other protections, were disabled.

Needless to say I was alarmed and didn't finish the free scan. I now have Kaspersky Pure 3.0, their latest, with all the bells and whistles.

takeover** - When I uninstalled Avast I noticed the change during the restart.  The shutdown and restart was much faster/smoother.  The Kaspersky install/restart was fast and smooth as well.  And today, my startup was fast and smooth.  Adios Avast...   :(

=============

I know faster and smoother are relative terms but I didn't time the before and after restarts.  I would guess the shutdown went from 30 seconds to 3 and the restart, (preload to desktop) from 60 seconds to 15.  Startup the same... 60 seconds to around 15.

My first computer was an Averatec laptop, running XP and came with 3 recovery disks.

Can I use these on a different brand machine?  Like Dell, Acer or whatever?   :tellme:

I just heard about this yesterday.  This site explains a couple of workarounds.

It appears XP users are basically screwed.   :(
