Found Deals and Discounts / Vegas Pro Edit 15 $25 on Humble
« on: December 14, 2017, 01:36 PM »
Humble has a new bundle that includes the Vegas Pro Edit 14 video editor in the $20 tier:

The bundle runs until Christmas day if I did my calendar math right.

I haven't used Vegas Pro because it's expensive and I don't do a lot with video editing, but it seems to have a good reputation.  It used to be owned by Sony but at some point last year it was acquired by Majix.  The SKU that's in the bundle is "Pro Edit" which is the less expensive of the three SKUs.  The other Vega SKUs are "Pro" and "Pro Suite" which appear to add things that are of little interest to me.

Vegas Pro is up to version 15 right now; I'm not sure what changes/features have been added between 14 & 15.  Vegas Pro Edit 15 is on sale for $150 right now on the official site; the normal price is $500 according to that page. (I don't know if this one of those "Oriental Rug" situations where something is perpetually on sale, or if it's an actual deal).

There's also a bunch of other stuff in the various tiers, but I'm only potentially interested in Vegas.

Anyway - if anyone has actual experience with this tool, I'd appreciate comments about whether this $20 deal might be worthwhile for someone like me who has only modest video editing needs. Right now I mostly just clip video snippets now and again.

I have never used SpiderOak, but have seen it discussed here so I think there might be interest in this.

Humble is running a "Software Bundle 2" that has a 1 year license for SpiderOak One cloud backup with 1TB of storage in the $15 tier. The 1TB plan usually costs $12 per month.  So if you were looking at SpiderOak for backup, this might be a cheap way to get started.

I don't know if this can be used to add a year to an existing plan.  The blurb says this about existing accounts: "License will overwrite any existing licenses during redemption and remaining credit will not be refunded".  So for people with existing accounts, I don't know if you can hang onto this license and activate it just before your existing one expires or if you have to activate it within some short period. But if you're on a month-to-month plan, this seems like a no brainer.

Note that if you purchase the $15 tier, you get a bunch of other software too, but none of it looked particularly interesting to me. Except maybe the Winx Media Trans which is part of the $1 tier.

The bundle is live for another 9 days from now:

DC Gamer Club / Deadlight free on GOG for the next 2 days
« on: August 14, 2017, 12:20 PM »
Free on GOG for the next 43 hours or so: Deadlight.  Some sort of zombie game.

     https://www.gog.com/...dlight_directors_cut

There's also a "Pinata" sale going on.  I think you get random offers when you 'hit the pinata'.  Or something.  I haven't bothered to figure it out yet.

For the next day or day and a half or so Humble Store is giving away free steam keys for some zombie game: Killing Floor

Sang-Froid is now available free (permanently) on GOG.  Apparently it has been free on Steam for a few months now.

I don't know anything about the game other than it's set in old-timey, frontier Canada and has werewolves, but I rarely argue with no-strings-attached free. The screen shots are nice.

DC Gamer Club / Eschalon I free on GOG
« on: February 28, 2017, 10:09 AM »
GOG is giving away the RPG Eschalon: Book I:

I'm not sure if this is a permanent 'price drop', or if it's only lasting until current RPG sale is done (March 5).

XCOM: UFO Defense is free at the Humble Store for the next 18 hours (until 10am Pacific time on Wed, Feb 1).

Steam key.

Humble Store is giving away a Steam key for Grid over the next couple of days (I think it ends Sat, Dec 24 at 2am PST).

I don't know if it's any good or not.  But it is free.

General Software Discussion / New PDF editor: FlexiPDF from SoftMaker
« on: November 09, 2016, 04:07 PM »
Looks like there's a new entry in the PDF editor market: FlexiPDf from SoftMaker, who are responsible for the SoftMaker Office Suite and some font collections.

I haven't tried the software so can't give any kind of review.

Introductory price is $60 (or €60) for the Standard version, $80 (or €80) for the Professional version.  Webpage says those are introductory prices.  I have no idea how long they might be valid for or what the pricing might be after the 'introduction'.

DC Gamer Club / A bunch of games on Gog 'Connect' right now
« on: November 07, 2016, 12:42 PM »
There are a bunch of games listed on Gog connect (https://www.gog.com/connect) right now, so you might be able to get some Steam games added to your Gog library if that's of interest to you.

Found Deals and Discounts / Humble Bundle Lifehacker Software Bundle
« on: November 02, 2016, 02:34 PM »
Humble Bundle has a non-games bundle of utility programs deal running for the next couple weeks:

The Humble Bundle Lifehacker Software Bundle: https://www.humblebu...cker-software-bundle

For a payment of at least $1, you'll get keys for:

    - Breevy
    - Fences + Deskscape
    - Directory Opus 12 "Light"

Pay more than the average (currently $7.45) and you'll also get keys for:

  - Display Fusion
  - LastPass Premium (1 year subscription) *new users only*
  - CyberGhost VPN (1 year subscription) *new users only*

Pay $15 or more to also get:

  - Acronis True Image 2017 (one year subscription)
  - Bitdefender Antivirus Plus 2017 (one year subscription)

I know that many of these programs have been discussed on Donationcoder in the past, but I don't personally use any of them currently so I have no opinion on how good these offers might be.  Also, I haven't delved into the details of licensing on the offers.

"Fences" looks like it might be interesting to play around with for a buck.

Get a free Steam key for Tropico 4 at Humble Bundle for the next day+:

I've never played any of the Tropico games - I have no idea how good it is.

General Software Discussion / TeamViewer hacked?
« on: June 01, 2016, 06:51 PM »
I don't use TeamViewer, but I know that it has been discussed several times here as a solution for remote access to PCs.  It's being reported that TeamViewer's systems have been hacked and that the attackers used the access they gained to also access end-user machines.

The reports include PayPal accounts being emptied and items ordered from Amazon and eBay.

Insync is a client for accessing Google drive from your desktop.  They have Windows, Mac, and Linux clients.  You need to link your Google account to their account.

    https://www.insynchq.com/free

See this reddit thread for some discussion about this offer:

Note/disclaimer: I have signed up for the free license, but haven't yet had an opportunity to try the product.

Slysoft, makers of CD, DVD & Bluray copy-protection circumvention software, has had their operation (or at least their website) shutdown in February.  They were incorporated in Antigua in order to try to prevent this kind of thing, but I guess after a few years their opponents were able to work around that.  It looks like Slysoft (or some group of employees) are trying to resume operation from some other country (Belize?) and maybe under a new name - RedFox.

If you are a customer and want to grab their latest software, the downloads are now hosted here: https://forum.redfox.bz/download/  Who knows how long that'll last, but there seems to be quite a bit of optimism that the operation will resume.

They have moved the forum to another server, https://forum.redfox.bz. Most of the discussion and news about the shutdown and the efforts to resume are in the "General Chat" area of the forum:

I found out about this when I went to download a copy of the free Virtual CloneDrive software to mount an ISO file.  Note that this particular software is also available at Elaborate Bytes, which is the original author of that particular utility (I think):

Gog is giving away the game "CONSORTIUM: The Master Edition" until February 13 2016, 1:59 PM GMT.

I've never played the game, but it's gotta be worth free at least, right?

I no longer actively use Outpost Security Suite, but from other posts on DC I think there are probably quite a few around here who might be using it.

It appears that about a month ago it was announced that Agnitum has been acquired by Yandex, a large Russian Internet company (described sometimes as the "Russian Google"). As far as I know, there haven't been any clear announcement about what this might mean for the future of Outpost firewall, anti-virus, or security suite software.

JetBrains, the developer of some popular development tools such as the IntelliJ IDEAJava IDE and the Resharper add-in for Visual Studio, is moving to a pure subscription model for most of its products in November.

Once that happens, you will no longer be able to purchase a license for those products that will work perpetually (if I understand the press release and FAQ):

This looks like it'll bring a lower initial cost for these tools, but I for one like the idea that if I need to I can fire up a two year old tool without hassling with making sure a subscription is currently in effect.  I wonder how upset their existing customer base will be (or not be)?

Actually, now that I look at things again, the planned regular prices for the one year subscription don't always look like a discount from today's perpetual license. In fact for some, the price is going up (WebStorm is $50 for an individual license today, and will be $99 for a 1 year subscription under the planned model)!

As far as I can tell, no strings attached (other than having to have a Humble Bundle account):

Free until Aug 31 2015: Stealth Inc 2: A Game of Clones: Humble Deluxe Edition

Both a DRM-free download and a Steam key is provided.

I'm not sure if "until Aug 31" means "through August 31" or "through August 30".  Their sales normally rollover at 10am Pacific time, so I wouldn't be surprised if this ends at 10am Pacific tomorrow.

In other words, if you're interested, get it today.

AdGuard (http://adguard.com/en/welcome.html) is being sold on a 'deal' site I haven't heard of before - StackSocial - in some sort of partnership with BitsDuJour.

A lifetime license to AdGuard Premium for 2 PCs and 2 Android devices is being sold for $40:

This license normally sells for $90 on the AdGuard site (the StackSocial page claims it normally sells for $120).  My recollection is that AdGuard sold these Premium licenses in a way that you had to choose whether the license would be used on a PC or an Android device - not on both concurrently.  AdGuard may have changed that (or I may have misunderstood). Anyway, this sale is being pitched as you can install on 2 PCs *and* 2 Android devices.

I myself have not used AdGuard on either device type, but it seems to be generally well received in the several posts I've read about it here and on Wilders, though some have concerns about the way it intercepts HTTPS traffic.

The sale lasts for another 2 days.

Each day until 17 May 2015, Packt is giving away a free programming ebook.

I have found that the quality of Packt books varies greatly, but they sometimes cover stuff that no other publisher does (like using the Android NDK for native programs). And it's hard to argue with free - if the book is junk, then delete it.

MS is releasing a cross-platform programming editor (in preview stage right now)

  - http://arstechnica.c...sual-studio-2015-rc/

And to make it clear, they are spying on you:  “When this tool crashes, we automatically collect crash dumps so we can figure out what went wrong. If you don't want to send your crash dumps to Microsoft, don't install this tool.”

I haven't tried it out yet, but if it comes close to the editing capabilities in VS, it'll be interesting to me.

SoftMaker has been bundling the eM Client software with some versions of SoftOffice to provide e-mail functionality.  They have apparently decided to end that arrangement and will be bundling a customized version of Thunderbird in future versions of SoftOffice:

As part of this they are also dedicating some development resources to Thunderbird and will be contributing fixes/enhancements to that project.

Seems like good news for Thunderbird. I'm not sure how I'd feel if I had gotten used to the eM Client.

I got the following in an email today.  I haven't yet downloaded anything, so I don't know what the quality level (or whether the software is laden with ads or not), but the fact they commit to a small donation to charity for each download seems worthwhile:
