General Software Discussion / Remove Hidden Boot Partition
« on: January 13, 2013, 04:58 PM »
My wife's laptop came with a recovery partition, a hidden os boot partition and a Win 8 partition. The machine doesn't have an optical disk or recovery CDs. I have an image of the Win partition and I'd like to delete the big recovery partition. It seems the only way to do that is to wipe the entire disk using diskpart; ordinary partition tools won't touch it. This would wipe out the hidden boot partition so, my question is can I restore the Win 8 image on a fresh drive and get it to boot? Is there a way to move whatever is necessary in the hidden boot partition to the main Win partition and reimage?

I'm thinking all this isn't doable and I can't afford to remove the recovery partition before I know I can get a bootable solution from an image.

LaunchBar Commander / Display Long Lists Side by Side
« on: December 15, 2012, 11:36 AM »
Is there a way to have long directory listings display side by side? It's okay on my desktop but trying to look a large directories on my laptop is a chore.

Here is an example of what I'm looking for. This is done in Powerpro:

Can FARR be made to auto close after choosing one of the toolbar icons just like it does when activating a program from search?

Living Room / Considering a Hackintosh - Anyone Try it yet?
« on: February 10, 2011, 05:25 PM »
I'm considering building a Hackintosh but I've never messed with Macs before. The build/install seems to be pretty straight forward and the software can be gotten cheap from Apple. I figure, if worst comes to worst, I could always turn it into a Windows machine. Would a Hackintosh work as well as a real Mac?

Is there enough freeware out there for a Mac that I don't have to spend another thousand on software?

Living Room / IP address on public network
« on: June 15, 2010, 06:55 PM »
If I connect wirelessly to a public network, or even the open network at my work, is my computer traceable? Is my ip address dependent on the source router or my computer?

Living Room / Cell phone number porting
« on: May 26, 2010, 08:24 PM »
Anybody know how number porting works? I ordered a new phone online (HTC Incredible) which is currently backordered. I asked to have my current number ported. I'm assuming that the phone will come already activated. So, what happens after Verizon activates my new phone with the ported number from Sprint? There will be a couple of days overlap with both old and new phones having the same number, or is my old phone disabled as soon as Verizon activates the new one? Will I be without a phone while the new one is in transit?

Living Room / Strange question about salsa
« on: March 02, 2010, 12:02 PM »
What the heck is in store bought salsa that makes it spark when microwaving it? I've noticed several times that when I try to heat up salsa in the microwave, it will spark as if there is metal in it (there isn't). Has anybody else experienced this?

Living Room / HD speed for Audio/Visual
« on: February 05, 2010, 09:35 AM »
Would a 5400 RPM drive be adequate to use for storing movies that I will watch on the local computer? I don't want to buy more features than I need and I'm thinking that the 5400 rpm will suffice and use less power.

Finished Programs / DONE: Search Subdirs for Missing File
« on: January 18, 2010, 07:28 PM »
I need the capability to search a directory that has a lot of subdirectories and find those subdirs that are missing a certain file. I'd like to be able to run a search and be able to see which folders are missing a filename that I can supply as an argument.

General Software Discussion / Need help or app for a unique search
« on: January 18, 2010, 03:27 PM »
I need the capability to search a directory that has a lot of subdirectories for those subdirs that do not have a certain file in them. I need to create a list, report, or readout of those subs. To be specific: I need to find those subdirs that do not have *.lrf in them.

Is there an existing search util that will do this for me? I don't speak regex but if that's what it takes, could someone hold my hand a bit? Could it be done in Autohotkey? I also have Directory Opus if that helps.

Living Room / Help put spare laptop to use
« on: July 20, 2009, 04:35 PM »
I have a spare laptop that I want to find a use for. It is about 5 years old, has an 80GB hd and the battery is dead. It still works on AC and I don't want to invest in a new battery as I already have a better laptop and 2 desktops. So, what is a good use for this thing? I don't need more central storage as I already have a 1TB NAS with a media server running on it. Is there a way to run antivirus/anti-spyware apps on a central machine and have the others route through that? If so, would that mean I wouldn't need these running on each individual machine? Any other ideas for putting this thing to use?

General Software Discussion / What's the Most Accurate Burner?
« on: April 08, 2009, 12:10 PM »
I am looking for the most accurate cd/dvd burning software that is Vista (Win7) compatible.

I bought Ashampoo Burning Studio when I first tried Vista as my older (but beloved) Nero 6 was incompatible. I really liked Burning Studio for the most part, keeping it even though I abandoned Vista and went back to XP. That was until 2 weeks ago when I tried burning the Windows 7 Beta ISO. I couldn't get the DVDs written in Burning Studio to install. I tried several times, burning at the slowest speed. So, I reinstalled Nero and tried that. Nero burned the image correctly the first time.

I will now be using Windows 7 so, once again, I'm looking for a compatible burning software. I no longer trust Ashampoo. I don't need audio burning capability as I use J.River Media Center for that. So, what is the most accurate burner out there, free or commercial? I've already read an old thread here on burning sw but it doesn't specifically address compatiblilty with Vista or above, and/or accurracy.

General Software Discussion / Price of Portability
« on: March 12, 2009, 08:06 AM »
I use quite a few apps that come in regular or portable versions. Without regards to speed, I would think that a portable installation would always be preferable. So, should I assume that using the registry is faster than a portable config file? Why offer two versions of the same software if a portable install would do the trick?

Yes, I know that Firefox portable is designed to not use a cache. So, there is an example of an app that is better with a normal install. Any others?

Found Deals and Discounts / ACDSee Photomanager 2009 - 65% off
« on: December 14, 2008, 08:53 AM »
I just picked up ACDSee Photomanager 2009 for an effective price of $17.50. List price is $50. Right now with each purchase they are giving 2 $10 gift cards for Amazon.com. Heck, I can always use those. So:
25BF08  code for %25 off of ACDSee until 31 Dec (-$12.50)
2 Amazon cards (-$20)
$17.50 effective price.

Thanks to all who answered my post about photo tagging. That post is what prompted me to look at photo managers. I tried all the ones mentioned in the post and settled on ACDSee. The discount pushed me over the edge.

General Software Discussion / Basic Question on Photo Tagging
« on: December 11, 2008, 03:39 PM »
I want to organize a huge library of photos by tagging them. I currently do not use any photo ablum software except for the occasional use of Picasa. Normally, I view my photos with Xnview and have them organized in folders.

If I use a particular software and tag the photos, will those tags be portable? For instance, if I tag in PhotoPro Album and later decide on Photoshop Album, will the tags show up in the new software?

I've got some rare free time coming up and I want to finally get this done.

Find And Run Robot / Access Violation
« on: June 11, 2008, 10:50 AM »
Running FARR 2.06.05 I get an access violation any time I shut the computer down.

Access Violation at address 74985DEE in module MSXML3.dll. Read of address 00000020

FARR runs fine at all time during normal computer ops and the problem only appears at Windows shutdown. Shutting down FARR manually does not trigger the error.

DcUpdater / Won't shut down
« on: September 06, 2007, 07:59 PM »
Okay, DCUPdater pops up for a scheduled check but it can't find Version info for FARRFox. It says "get version failed". No problem. But, now it will not exit. I tried the red X, File exit, and Exit from the tray icon. None work. I had to shut it down from taskmanager.

Find And Run Robot / Delete an Alias
« on: July 27, 2007, 07:43 AM »
How do I delete an alias? I created a test alias to try something out and now FARR will not let me delete it. It says it is read-only. No big deal as I can uncheck it, but I am curious.  The alias is in MyAliases.alias and the file is not read only.

General Software Discussion / Automatic Reg Key Backup
« on: June 21, 2007, 12:19 PM »
Does anybody know of a solution that will backup select registry keys? I used to use a program called RegKeyBackup from MoonSoftware but it seems that they pulled it. Are there any other products out there that can create backup sets for registry keys just like a normal backup program creates file backup sets? Is there a way to do it without software, like through a batch file?

General Software Discussion / Automee - Really neat
« on: June 18, 2007, 01:21 PM »
I found a really nice, simple piece of sw today. Automee is a very tiny program that does macros, form filling, program launching, etc. It even has a text based todo tracker. It was listed today on FreewareGuide and was the first I had heard of it. I'm always looking for very simple but productive software and I am impressed with this. I'm curious if anybody else has heard of it or what they think.

General Software Discussion / Recommend Vista CD Burner
« on: June 10, 2007, 07:36 PM »
Can somebody please recommend to me a good CD/DVD burning program that is Vista compatible? I currently have Nero 6 on my XP Pro but I will be loading Vista Business next week and I know that Nero 6 is not compatible. I'm not really sure that I want to pay another $50 to upgrade to ver 7. Does anybody know of any good freeware burning programs that are Vista compat?
