Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Mini-Review of Cropper
« on: October 09, 2009, 07:12 PM »
I've used a few different screenshot-capture tools, and keep ending up back with Cropper. It has a number of plugins available these days, including plugins to allow you to capture images to an animated GIF, an AVI movie file, e-mail, flickr, OneNote, Amazon S3, or TinyPic. There is also a plugin that allows you to create a new Team Foundation Server work item with the captured image as an attachment, as well as one that gives you a countdown before capturing the screen (to allow setup). A few crashes aside, I've never had reason to complain about the functionality, and you can't beat the price :-*.

DC Gamer Club / Re: 30 PC Games to Play Before You Die
« on: May 07, 2009, 12:57 PM »
I've played like 90% of the games on the list, which is kind of worrying to me, as I don't actually consider myself much of a gamer these days . I respect them for posting the list at all, because I'm sure that any list of thirty games would miss some significant contributions to the genre, because there have just plain been too many good games!
Having said that, I think they should've dropped a couple of the games on there for a few of the real "game-changing" games that were both immensely popular and set the stage for new advances in gaming:
  • Myst
  • Half-Life
  • Team Fortress
  • Warcraft and/or Starcraft
Also, maybe it doesn't belong on this list, but I'm with nafs: I sure had a great time playing Bard's Tale back in the day :D.

If you're trying to do this somewhere you only have access to CMD.EXE, I'm pretty sure you can use FOR..IN..DO to get the job done. It's a little-known tool that provides a lot of powerful functionality. The UI is crap, though.... :P

This may or may not be directly helpful, but if not, it may at least point you in a useful direction: http://bit.ly/l814y.

General Software Discussion / Re: Do You Purchase Software on Impulse?
« on: February 25, 2008, 07:01 PM »
I've gotten better about it, but I still have the occasional "Drink too much, crave a new app to play with, buy the first thing I find" occurrence.

That's me in a nutshell. (Well, OK, this is me in a nutshell, but I fall right into the category of "getting better, but still occasionally drunk-buying."  :o

Living Room / Re: Looking for a good bartenders guide
« on: February 25, 2008, 06:54 PM »
I am on the prowl for a good bartenders guide or mixed drink book/software program (one with search capability). As of late, I have become more and more attracted to making mixed drinks with various liquors and liqueors.

Any help is appreciated.

One attractive online resource is Esquire Magazine's online drink recipe collection. I'll chime in with oldfart here and say the less "crazy" you get with your drinks, the more your body and head will thank you. My favorites these days are (good) tequila straight, Manhattans, and Old Fashioneds (I'm a big rye and bourbon fan, if you couldn't tell...and have quite a few reviews of such, along with various tequilas, on my blog.)

Having said all that, the rules are different if you're in Vegas Mode -- where you're drinking fairly steadily over a long period of time, without being able to control liquor brands. In Vegas, I drink tequila and grapefruit juice (delicious, does a yeoman job of hiding bottom-shelf harshness, and keeps the blood sugar up) with the occasional Bloody Maria (for fiber-y goodness and olives  :-*). Probably shortened my life a couple years thanks to Outraged Liver, but there you have it  8).

Microsoft gives away free developer software to students
 (see attachment in previous post)

Note also that there's still a month or so left on their Office-2007-Ultimate-for-$59.95 student deal. Frankly, if you need more than one of these applications, it's probably saving money if you sign up for a couple courses at your local community college. I'm fortunate enough to already be taking classes anyway .

Source Insight is a fantastic editor...for C++. I've found it largely unusable for C# code, unfortunately; the refactoring capabilities of Resharper makes using Visual Studio a worthwhile experience, though. I've been hoping for a long time that the day would soon come when a new release of Source Insight would arrive, with built-in refactoring support (and preferably a usable C# implementation). So far, that hope has been in vain :(. It's still unbeatable as a C++ editor, though, especially if you have a large and/or tangled codebase. I have a couple of blog posts on Source Insight-related stuff:

Also Dale Carnegie's classic, <a href="http://www.amazon.co...89&creative=9325">How to Win Friends & Influence People</a><img src="http://www.assoc-ama...mp;l=ur2&amp;o=1" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" />. I was a skeptic for a long time, but it's a great book. If nothing else, you can use what you learn from it to recognize what other people are doing.
