I use Win Patrol pro version .Win patrol  will advise you of a program that wants to install itself at startup, let it  install itself , then disable it from the "manage startup program" menu (see image). it will not try to reinstall itself since it is already in the startup list and WP will not let it work.

I also use Win patrol. If you lookup the "manage startup program" tab in WP you can disable the startup from the program that listed itself and it will not actually startup. If you remove it from the list, it will reinstall itself again, but disabling it will stop it from doing that. It will still be on the startup list but shown as disabled.

I have used version 16 in the past. I had forgotten why I uninstalled it, I now installed version 18.0.1 and was reminded of why I removed version 16.
Some add-ons are not compatible: roboform not being the least. I will now remove version 18 as it has the same problems. Too bad, I enjoyed the speed.

You could try the following: Preton inksaver It will also save on colored ink.

General Software Discussion / Re: How to become Admin' for real?

There is also a free program called:"Take ownership". It will install in the context menu and will really take ownership on anything you point it at. Do it only once, but a warning from the site: do not take ownership of the whole C drive.

I just tried Windows 8........
After 1 day of looking around the screen I finally found a lot (few) of the usefull (to me) functions that I normally use. Of course it took more than the usual one or two clicks. I then started to look on the net for software that replaced the lost functionality that I had been used to. AND THEN I realized that I DID NOT need Windows 8 as I had all I needed in Windows 7. Surprise, there was no installer for Windows 8. Back to the net and the solution: erase the partition and repair the bootwhatever. Luckily, it worked and now I am back to using simple and friendly software.
What a nice experiment to show that new is not always best.

DesktopCoral / Re: Always reset

I had this problem before and also tried many things to try and resolve it. You might try the following: open the .ini file in the desktop coral file in "Program files" or wherever it is, with a text editor and enter the parameters you want to AND SAVE these edited parameters. This worked for me and except for a problem that was resolved by Mouser (.exe/autotun), I have been fully enjoying this neat software.
Hope this works for you.

DesktopCoral / Re: Problem with new version 1.05.01
« on: July 16, 2009, 09:40 AM »
I installed the new v1.06.01 and the /autorun does not present a problem anymore. Win patrol still asks if I will allow desktop coral.exe/autorun to run at boot, but in the Win patrol startup section info, the .exe /autorun version is displayed in the disabled section, while the .exe version is in the allowed section. If I remove the disabled version (.exe/autorun) from the disabled list, it shuts off desktop coral altogether. So I just leave it both in the startup section (.exe) and the disabled section (.exe/autorun) of WinPatrol.
Different but functional.
Thanks for the correction.
Jacques.

"ERROR in commandline: Unknown parameter '/autorun' -- should be from,
[floatpos,monitorid,placement,dockwidth,dockheight]"

This is the same error screen I get at boot.

DesktopCoral / Problem with new version 1.05.01
« on: July 08, 2009, 10:40 AM »
I have installed the new version of desktop coral (1.05.01) and I am using Win patrol to control startup options. Desktop coral wants to start as an:autorun (desktopcoral.exe/autorun). I have tried different ways to allow desktop coral to run at start up without getting the windows error message. at boot xp shows me an error screen asking what is the unknown parameter '/autorun' and as I click off the error message, desktop coral exits. I have not changed anything on the system before or after installing the new version. Everything was fine with the older version. I use desktop coral to protect a small space on the right of the screen to allow scrolling within apps. without needlessly activating  "RocketDock".
Is the older version available?

Jacques.

General Software Discussion / Re: Align Icons 2.0
« on: April 18, 2009, 08:54 AM »
You might try: Icon Restore
It works as follows: position your desktop icons, right click on any icon left click: "save desktop icon layout" and presto , anytime you need to restore the layout just right click any icon and left click "restore desktop icon layout".
Very handy and easy!

DesktopCoral / Re: Usefullness
« on: April 04, 2008, 10:29 AM »
I really like this program (Desktop cor(r)al).
I use it to protect http://rocketdock.com/ on the right side of the screen and still be able to scroll without affecting on "Rocket dock".
I do have one small problem. I made sure that desktop coral would start on boot. It does but with default settings for width and transparency and not with readjusted settings  as set for my application. Am I doing something wrong?

General Software Discussion / Re: Are you testing XP SP3 RC ??
« on: December 13, 2007, 10:41 AM »
I have tried to install SP 3, at first, without success. I knew that my os needed to be repaired so I did a recovery and then installed SP 3 and had no problems,,, until I had to reboot the system. Then: blue screen and , yes, let's do another system recovery. Now after many days of rebuilding my system the way I like it(IE.: removing all the bundled software included with the system recovery) and reinstalling my favorites software and cleaning up, I will wait for SP3 to be available normally.
I do not know what happened save that the computer would not boot. Still, I did need to do a recovery, so no harm done.

One of the use I like from Power Desk is the easy encrypting and decrypting of files using icons on the toolbar. It is a relatively simple explorer replacement to use and does not require hours of training.

General Software Discussion / Context menu editing
« on: July 12, 2007, 03:56 PM »
I have a problem with the context menu. Whenever I click to open a drive (any): in this case K= personal hard drive (160 GB removable hard drive with USB connection), a command window opens. This happens only with these type of files. Recently I moved from  Window explorer to Power Desk and thought that would fix the problem. I can always right-click and choose open in the context menu. For these drives, open is not the first choice, but open command window here is the top actual command in the context menu of the drive name. Power desk or Explorer will take that top command as the action command. How do I change this action to: open and remove the open command window here line.?
I have looked for context menu editors, but they seem to add commands but not remove them unless from a specific software.
This is a very annoying action mostly so because I use Rocket Dock to open drives and files. Now when I want to open K or any other drives, I get a command screen.
Please help!!!

I have used Filehippo update checker 3 or 4 times so far, and it seems to come up with the correct newer file version every time.
It even will list Beta versions in a separate paragraph.
I like the free service and am going to continue using it.

There is a possible solution to this question: to cut or not to cut.
This software: http://www.addintool...nuoffice/default.htm can rollback the ribbon to give you the classic look of office 2003 and also keep some of the best features of the ribbon.
It is not free and can also apply to excel.

Also did that (uninstall everything related to visual studio and .net framework) which is why I am looking at my machine's config.

I uninstalled all I had on .net framework, then installed version 3 of .net.
Then I tried to reinstall visual studio again and it did not work.
Now I am reading the database of microsoft on install problems for visual studio express and so far I still am nowhere. There is something about "BIT" and that does not look promising as my computer seems to react correctly on suggested tests.
If anybody can help, I would really appreciate.
I was so looking forward to learn some programming in C#.

Hello Curt,
I was waiting for some responses(suggestions) before trying anything.
I think I will uninstall .net framework and reinstall it from the microsoft site and not from my download folder, that way I should insure that I get the correct version. I will keep you posted as to the results.

I have tried to install Visual studio without removing .net framework, and it just freezes the installation and is difficult to remove. I used Procexp  from Sysinternals to remove  the install screen and then still had to reboot.
Are you saying that visual studio will install a version of .net framework? I need .net to run some apps.

I did some elaborate cabinets using Visio. It is simple to use and easy to learn unlike some cad programs. In assembling the cabinets, I found a source of  hardware ( http://www.quinkotek.com ) similar to the hardware provided with the precut computer furniture and cabinets. This hardware allows you to assemble or take apart and reassemble your furniture. It works with clamps that are not visible after assembly. The cutting of the wood requires quite a bit of accuracy. The cutting service offered at some wood suppliers might not be adequate. I used a kitchen cabinet manufacturer for my cutting needs and the assembly went perfectly.
If you would like to see some pics, let me know and I will see what I can come up with.

Hello, Skrommel,
Just downloaded "Idle Run". It installed easily in the tray and showed  -(minus) 97%. I clicked on settings,,, I am not into programming and cannot set anything. I came back 5 minutes later, and the tray icon was not there anymore but the space for it existed and showed -92%. Reinstalling the .exe did not bring back the tray icon. I have a dual processor (AMD 64x2 dual core 4600+). ??? I would love a negative CP usage. Is this what you referred to as possible problems with dual core processors?

General Software Discussion / Vista transformation pack
« on: January 07, 2007, 07:56 PM »
This is a very interesting  software package to emulate Vista : http://www.softpedia...formation-Pack.shtml Many of the components are separate apps. and can be used without the hole package. The package has improved a lot since I last tried it ( V.4) but still needs to polish some. I installed it and then removed it but you can keep some of the functions. Here is a little doodle that goes in circle when the OS is working which I find a plus, that lets me know that something is happening.
The sidebar is well done and after some install problems, seems to work fine.  I use it to open Firefox ( with the search gadget), it seems to me that Firefox opens so much faster!!
I emailed the author of the sidebar about some bugs? (decimal weather was a click away) and had an immediate response.
