Three other options that you might consider (best experimenting with them - I don't know, for example, whether they work with Win 7) -

1. UltraRecall. This enables you to create a repository of PDF files and search them in various ways (Boolean search operators etc.), and that includes searching Hebrew and internal display of PDF files. UR has additional advantages: (a) you can annotate relevant PDFs (not internal PDF annotations, but annotations in UR which are "attached" to the PDF files) and search these annotations along with the original PDFs; (b) you can also search within other types of files, including all Office file types (except for Access), RTF files, and HTML, and all such files can be internally displayed in UR. You can also use UR to search files which are linked to the program, and not just files stored internally in UR.

2. X1. This is a full fledged desktop search program (not based on a user-generated repository of files), which enables you to search multiple file types, and provides internal display options, though not close to those provided by UR.

I use both UR and X1 extensively (obviously, for different kinds of projects), and I am extremely happy with both of them.

I also have a license for Archivarius, and while I prefer X1 over Archivarius, Archivarius has one potentially significant advantage over X1 (although I find it inferior in other ways, e.g. in terms of its interface): it enables you to search for prefixes, whereas X1 does not. Thus, for example, you can search Archivarius for [muse] and find "bemused" and "muses," whereas X1 will only locate the latter form (to find "bemused" you will have to do a double search = bemuse* or muse*).

3. Copernic Desktop Search, paid version. (The free version does not let you search PDFs). I don't have too much experience with this one, and I am disinclined towards it, since it works on a subscription model rather than a one-time payment model, as with the other products. Still, you might want to try it out.

Other options, which I am not sure at all how helpful you would find them, are Zotero and the no longer developed, but still downloadable, Smereka Tree Projects (

If you are not satisfied with these options, another place you might want to check out, is the excellent Outliner Software forum (

Good luck! (If you want to PM me about any of this I would be happy to try and help.)

Ultra Recall ( is superb for this sort of thing.

I think that the main advantage of DO over other file managers is the ease with which it enables one to label files with different colors and statuses, and to sort and organize the files accordingly. So users for whom such functionality is really important might do well to take advantage of the current offer (otherwise, hard to think of anything earthshaking that the DO people can put in version 13 that isn't already present in 12).

At Bitsdujour today (Personal Finance Pro) - so far this looks like a pretty decent program, although it is obviously worthwhile checking this out more carefully.

Today Bitsdujour is offering a significant discount on a personal finance program, Personal Finances Pro.

From a quick look this seems like a promising program, which might be of interest to people seeking an alternative to YNAB's subscription model, although potential users should obviously give it a more comprehensive look.

Vueminder Calendar - - terrific program!

LM7, do you know that those registry fixes have been updated to accommodate Office 2010? They were previously only valid up to Office 2007, IIRC.

I did search around for a fix to allow opening Office files in IE, but all I could find was the opposite - ways to prevent that! If those registry fixes work for Office 2010 I'll make the changes immediately! I prefer doing it manually so I can backup each key I remove before making any changes.

Hi Jim!

I tried the registry fix on my computer with Office 2010, downloading the relevant file from the UR forum post which I had mentioned previously, and it worked perfectly! (I am using a Win 7 32 bit computer.)

Just for the record, though, I should note that this worked under IE 8, because I encountered problems with IE 9 in UR: I cannot access Gmail in UR's internal browser with  IE 9 installed.

Also, it is by no means impossible that while the aforementioned registry fix worked fine on my computer, it won't on other people's computers. (I tested all of this after taking a Rollback RX snapshot, just to make sure I could recover my previous configuration easily in case something got messed up...)

Oops - another little irritant I just discovered, though it is actually a Microsoft thing, not directly an Ultra Recall thing. Prior to this I could open and edit any Microsoft document (Word, Excel, Outlook - never tried PPT or PUB) within Ultra Recall. Nice feature, not having to open the Office app associated with the file. Now however with Office 2010, Microsoft has disallowed opening any file outside of the associated Office 2010 app.   :(   >:(

Ultra Recall uses Internet Explorer as it's internal browser and so used that to open/edit Microsoft Office files. Now Microsoft no longer allows Office files to open in IE - safety/security thing apparently, or so Microsoft claims. A real PITA though. Now clicking on an Office file inside Ultra Recall opens the file in its native app - Word, Excel, etc. Not a tremendous hardship but it is nice to be able to do it all in UR. Hopefully someone finds a hack for this!

Thank you.

You can display files internally in UR under Office 2010 by following the instructions at (if necessary, you can DL the registry file at the site and double-click it to install) - I tried this and it worked for me.

Good luck and enjoy!

As an addendum to my post above, I will say that one of Ultra Recall's biggest missing features is the one that is biting me hard right now: the inability to save its settings for future use. I just reinstalled UR-Pro on my brand new computer and have spent the last hour + trying to get the layouts and settings just like they were before. Unfortunately it is not as simple as making a copy of an .ini or .dat file; UR stores its settings in the Windows registry, so unless you have a way to back-up your previous computer's registry in a way that allows you to restore only certain keys or at least read the settings in a human-recognizable language, then you must simply start over and try to get it close. I imagine that I COULD have made screen captures of each settings page but that wasn’t on my mind when I was making sure I had all the necessary setup files and registration codes available for the re-installations of all my software. Drats!!

Not truly a problem... just a pretty damn good annoyance!

You can transfer UR settings from one computer to another (I have done a number of times  times while updating computers) with two steps: copying the relevant registry information (using Regedit and exporting the Kinook Software key under HKCU - Software), and by copying relevant user settings as stored in your user profile.

I recently purchased VueMinder Calendar, and based on my experience with it I recommend it VERY highly. (Just for the record, I am in no way associated with the developer - I'm simply an ordinary end user.)

Anyone who has serious calendaring needs will probably be better off with this program than any other (and I have tested numerous programs of this sort) - and the program is constantly being developed and improved!

The program is very full-featured and also aesthetically beautiful. It's probably the most powerful offline calendar available, yet despite the plethora of features it offers (listed on their website), it's very easy to learn and use.

The developer is EXTRAORDINARILY responsive and is constantly introducing new features at the request of users - and he also corrects bugs very quickly, in addition to implementing user suggestions quite rapidly. Updates of the program are fast and frequent.

In short, if you're interested in an offline calendar, I very strongly suggest taking advantage of this offer - the program is excellent, and the price is truly a bargain.

This is a very impressive calendar program for those who are interested - the discount is being featured on July 1 (Wed.).

Find And Run Robot / Re: Questions about aliases
« on: March 25, 2008, 02:14 AM »
Thanks for the quick reply -

1. Sorry, that wasn't what I was looking for (but good to know anyway)!
2. I meant that I was looking for a shortcut for the operator "+alias", not for the first few words of the alias itself.
3. Yes, that's exactly what I want - to copy the search result.

Find And Run Robot / Questions about aliases
« on: March 24, 2008, 11:57 PM »
A few questions about this marvelous function - pardon my ignorance!

1. Is there any way to automatically cause the list of files in a search results window which contains Alias results to open up without having to double-click the list? For example, instead of the top result being "Exercise - Alias, 6 items", is there some way to make the results automatically appear as: Shoulder exercises.doc, Physiotherapy.doc, etc.

2. Is there any shortcut (or way to make a shortcut), for +alias (e.g, +al), so it won't be necessary to type out the whole word (to save time)?

3. Is there any way to automatically copy all the files located from an alias to a specified location on the hard disk, in effect copying material from a virtual folder into a "real" folder?

Whether you have to add the info to different programs depends upon how you work. Thus, I use Tudumo to keep track of tasks which are not date-/time-dependent, and a calendar program for tasks which are date- and time-dependent, so there is no overlap.

Tudumo (, a superb to-do list program, which was recently released from beta, is being sold for $19.95 till March 20 - afterwards the price goes up to $29.95.

This program, which combines power and simplicity in an extraordinarily efficient and user-friendly package, also uses minimal resources - VERY highly recommended! (It does not displace traditional calendar/PIM software, but rather supplements them.)

Please note that I am in no way connected to the developer, just a very satisfied user who has been using the program since it was in beta, and hence happy to pass on the news to others who might want to take advantage of the discount, as I did.

Adarian Money (for both Windows and Palm) and AceMoney (also has a lite version for free) - both fine programs.

Is there any chance of featuring UltraRecall ( at a discount on DonationCoder?
