What are the primary benefits you envision? What kind of interface would you prefer? What kinds of tasks would you perform?

If it is a shell plug in or add-on, then all software that rely on Windows Shell will benefit from it.

For example, file search, rename, mass rename, delete, mass delete, select, mass select, .....etc.
Instead of using wild cards, regular expressions are far more superior and productive.

Yes it's me again, the one obsessed with Regular Expressions. 

This would certainly increase productivity and usability of Windows if it suddenly supported Regular Expressions.

Donations, more than just the ones that I have in my profile are available for the proper implementaion of this idea.

I am sure lots of others out there other than me have several computer that they would like to see their Firefox profiles synced between them.

I know that there are around a dozen Firefox bookmark sync services, but never seen a Firefox profile sync.
Netscape did have a "Roaming Profile" feature which was helpful, but that is no longer there, and Seammonkey has it now, but I am more interested in using Firefox than Seamonkey.

A profile sync that includes themes, add-ons, extensions and bookmarks would be a great thing to have.
I am currently using FEBE (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2109/) and a script to download and install on other computers, but that's hardly efficient, and bugs are sometimes causing me headaches.

I'd like a virtual button, thank you, that sits in my tray, which enables and disables my (dsl) local area connection. When the connection is enabled--the button is green. When the connection is disabled--the button is red. Any takers?

If you are using Windows XP, that's a feature already buiult in into the OS.

Go to your Network connections, by right clicking on My Network Places on the desktop and then choosing Propertiesm (or Click Start/Settings/Networking connections), and then right click the connection in question, and then choose Properties.

In the properties Window, at the bottom section, you should see the following chek boxes.

[ ]Show icon in the notification area when connected.
[ ]Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity.

Checking both will give you a nice in the systray that even displays amount of network traffic in real time if you point your mouse on that icon, and will display green activity color when connected.

Almost all of the freeware RSS readers/aggregators have no filtering functionality or use filters to combine and direct feeds.

The idea is a simple RSS reader whcih incorporates regexp based filtering.

That will prevent spam/offensive content from reaching you, and helps reducing duplicate.

I am currently using an email2rss and that is curretly filtered only on the header, since Forte Agent, as of this time, cannot filter on body content.

I have been meaning to post this for quite some time now. <a href="http://www.quest.com">Quest Software</a> has released <a href="http://www.quest.com/toad_for_mysql/">Toad for MySQL 2.0</a>, and there is a free version. If anybody works with MySQL as either a developer or a DBA should download it and take it for an extended test drive. Toad is another one of those swiss-army-like tools that you can only really appreciate after extended use.

I have been testing it extensively since I saw it on a freeware site.
A bit buggy and lacks features, but you can't argue about the price.

You don't need to install SP1 and then SP2, you just need to install SP2, and after SP2, you need to continue updating Windows until you see nothing left.


To make things easier, you can always download and use Microsoft's Security updates that are on ISOs, which you can burn to CDs and install from there, without waiting for the udpates to download, especially when you have a slow connection.

Also, the reason that you got a different size in SP2 is that it was the "express" installation which is the basic collection that installs itself after downloading the rest from Microsoft, but the larger one is the "redistributable" one which you don't even need an Internet access to install.

From my experience, the site offers a combination of both genuinly found and shared sites, and paid to be promoted.

And if I get any more of that "flight fare watch" crap, I'll scream. 

But overall, it is great thing to have, provided that you have some time to spend.

My favorite is still oscars -- which lists the files in a plain text field. I typically just copy/paste into EditPad, perform the rename regex there, then copy it back to oscars.  I love turning file structures into text files and back

I must have missed that, for me, it does not, neither that is mentioned in the documentation, nor on its web site.
And for some reason, it stops responding when I try to record a macro.

I've used in the past, too much to deal with and inefficient if not useless when it comes to handling folders.

For example this is what you need to do to move.
xxcopy \src\ \dst\ /rsy/pd0/s/h/r/q1
or
xxcopy \src\ \dst\ /rmdir/y/q1

While in Linux/UNIX

mv /src/  /dst

Thanks for the assistance, but that does only renaming without regexp and doesn't handle forlder (or at least from what I tested so far), which is what I am looking for.

There are several, and I have tested all, unfortunately, not a single one combines commandline/regexp/file and folder renaming  features together.

I would like to see a command line move that works as mv in Linux/UNIX does.

The built in one in Windosws cannot move folders and only renames them under the same parent folder, and the UNIX ports so far are either buggy (one of the adds endless loops of the folders moved at the destination) or don't support UNC paths.

Again this is a time saver in batch files instead of capturing the folder name, copying the tree and then deleting it.

I would like to see a command line based (non GUI) based renamer that supports regular explressions, works on both files and folders, and also supports working on \\UNC paths.

The ones out there, either do not support folder renaming, buggy, or do not have regular expression capability.

It is very handy to use in batch files.
