I got it!

I didn't have the Quick Capture Bar, but I went into the Preferences -> Post-capture options and selected "File itself" under "Copy to clipboard".

Oh.  I thought you said, "This is probably in the Preferences dialogue as well - but I do know there's a mountain of stuff in there :-)"  -- you did rescue me, I think, so that I can get the screenshots into the clipboard more easily; but my goal is for them to land there completely automatically.

Or did I misunderstand?

Thanks for trying to rescue me.  I think that new menu-dashboard-thingie popped up when I wasn't expecting it and I just batted it away like a pesky fly, so thanks for telling me how to get it back.

I hope someone can tell me how to fix the settings or else where to find the last version that put the current screenshot in the clipboard automatically so I can roll back.  Also I'd like to know how to hold onto my settings when downgrading.

I watched enough of the second screencast to feel overconfidently ready to give it a try.  A bunch of things went wrong and I'm not sure if any of the screencasts address my problems.  Also it's rather overwhelming to have a big list of screencasts.  (If they were text and screenshots I'd have an easier time skimming through them to find my problem.)  So, I apologize for not watching them all.

First problem -- I am using a trial version of some fantastic software called Draftable for MS Word to compare two files.  The results are so much nicer than what the built-in compare feature in Word gives me.  (I'm working with Word 2010.)  It's a bit like the compare plugin for Notepad++, in case you're familiar with that.

Draftable gives me two side by side windows and I can choose to lock them together for scrolling down, or to manually control the scrolling.  Screenshot Captor didn't want to select both windows.  I don't know if this would happen with Notepad++ Compare or Word Compare.

Second problem -- I started by selecting the left-hand file (window) but my capture didn't scroll -- it just gave me a little strip at the top.

Third problem -- I went back to my old technique, defining the region myself with the cross hairs and the dragging, but the capture didn't automatically get put into the clipboard as it used to do before I updated the software.  This is the problem that I really need to solve -- I can live without the scrolling feature.

I looked in the preference screens but couldn't find a solution.

Thank you.  Where would I find that?

I'm using version 3.18.0.  Do I need to update?  I'm generally conservative about updating, because I don't like spending time finding my way around a rearranged grocery store (so to speak).

I need to capture the whole active window, including the part that's not visible.  I looked at the hotkey preferences, and thought that "active window" would do it, but it cut off the non-visible part.  Thanks in advance.  I love screenshot captor.

Maybe you could associate with "sell," which also has two L's.

When I copy something in two colors from an email message, it gets pasted as plain text if I copied it from Thunderbird, and it gets pasted as formatted text if I copied it from my browser gmail.  What settings or procedure can I use to get formatted text when I'm copying from Thunderbird?  Thank you.

This is the window I'm talking about:

Hi, I thought you might want to know that I find "miscelaneous" in the settings screens of some of your software, but this word actually takes two L's.

Mouser's Zone / do you have some software to do this?
« on: May 22, 2015, 08:30 AM »
I use gmail + thunderbird.  Suppose I have selected some messages, either with a filter or manually, and given them a label.  Now they are in a thunderbird folder.  I would like to automatically save in a file all the messages with that label (working in the browser) or all the messages in that folder (working in thunderbird).

As a longtime fan of Screenshot Captor, I checked the Donation Coder list of software and found your clipboard utility, and I think that will be an improvement over my current clipboard utility, Arsclip.  Arsclip is good but I have never figured out how to merge clips -- or maybe it doesn't have that feature.  I watched the CHS video tutorial and learned how to do that with CHS.  So I think I can live with this approach, but I wanted to check if there's another approach that would be more automated.

If not -- I think there would be a lot of demand for such a piece of software.

Thank you.

I like to take my screenshots with border half the time and without half the time.  I'd like to be able to set a different keyboard shortcut for each type.

I hope this is doable.  Thanks!

Best Weather Monitor Tool / weather watcher

Thank you for the weather utilities reviews.  I chose Weather Watcher, because I was looking for something lightweight.

I'm writing to let you know that the link in the review takes one to the version that is free only as a 30-day trial.  But your review says it's free.

It is available elsewhere for free, so I think you should either give a different link, or remove the link and let people google it for themselves.

Thanks for the quick reply, glad you didn't mind my posting here.  I forgot the most important piece of feedback.  When I tried to log in to the forum, I used the wrong version of my standard forum password.  Then I had to do a reset.  This could have been avoided if the password choice rules were visible when my first login attempt failed.  If that is too much trouble to implement, then could you just display them always, as a matter of course?  Once I see the rule "eight characters," then I have a pretty good idea what I originally chose as a password.  Hope you can understand my problem (bad memory) and my suggestion.  Thanks.

1. There is a nice sticky post explaining that feedback should be posted to the bug tracker, but I couldn't find a link to the bug tracker (hence this post being put in the wrong place -- apologies!).

2. My first six months were up today for Screenshot Captor.  The message that popped up today when I restarted my computer talked about going to the link "above."  It should say "below."

3. The page I landed at did not seem to have a login on it.  That should be easy to implement and it sure would make the process more user friendly.

Thank you for Screenshot Captor.  I use it almost every day!  (I'm not very good at it yet though.  Someday I will try to get a bit better at it but not this week -- I'm under a deadline.)

General Software Discussion / Re: forum password suggestion

I have a couple of low-security passwords that I use for forums.  With so many forums, there's no way I can keep track of a different one for every single forum.  But I don't use the low-security ones for important things.

Well, I haven't done experiments with wordpress yet -- I was using a quick insert into Word to predict what would happen in wordpress.

If you look at the apachefriends site, the font they're using is very ugly, and my screenshots do awful things to the letters.

What I originally wanted to do was choose a frame size of 350 px wide, zoom my browser in or out as needed so the portion of the site I want to capture fits nicely into that frame, do the capture, save the file, upload it to wordpress, and insert it into the page as a full-size image.  But when I examined the capture, I found that the letters looked awful.  I will try to make an attachment of part of it so you can see what I mean.

I got better results when I zoomed the browser to make the subject take up more space on the screen and then captured at 700 px wide.  But then when I reduced it down with the thumbnail feature, it got very yucky indeed.  I used bicubic.  I don't know what would be the best fitting algorithm to choose.  I was saving pngs.

I took a series of screenshots and they all got saved to a certain folder, but I forgot to give them their shadows.  I came back later and figured out how to edit them after the fact.  Now I want to save all of them without making new files.

I managed to load in all my images from earlier in the day.  Can I batch save them, now that I have done some ideting?

The 50%, etc., were the things I noticed first, and that's where I wanted the + and - to be.  Glad to know about the slider.

I do think that in general, if you follow conventions, it will be easier for people to pick up your software.

If you want a simple free screenshot utility, I hope our host doesn't mind if I recommend jet screenshot.  I bet after you've used that for awhile, you'll start to hanker for some of the additional features of the Captor.

I got the pointer (sorry, I didn't mean cursor) to show up by doing active window.  I just had to learn to account for a slight displacement of the arrow.  (Mine is windows black extra large.)  It was the fixed region that wasn't working for me.

I specified show cursor, but I'm not seeing the cursor.

I didn't actually test this feature in the stable release.

Screenshot Captor / Re: how get better resolution?
« on: February 25, 2013, 12:35 PM »
I discovered a special effect called "add shadow to entire image" almost all the way down the menu, and I like the shadow.

I tried capturing at 700 px wide and inserting in Word to get a quick look at it in a document.  I reduced it by half, and it looks much better than the next capture I took, at 350 px wide (with the browser zoomed out appropriately).

I also tried resizing the capture in Captor, 50% with bicubic fitting, and the results were not as good as the 350 px wide original capture (judging by how it looked inserted in Word -- which of course is not the ultimate test of how it will look on the web).

So for now, I'm planning to take my captures as large as I can and then let WordPress scale them to a uniform size.

The screenshot above looks just like what I'm aiming for, but my attempts to use the thumbnail feature look much worse.  And it seems to me that by definition, a thumbnail is going to be less sharp than the original.
