Official Announcements / Re: DC-IRLDD Champaign, IL - New Years
« on: December 23, 2008, 08:12 AM »
Mouser,

I am not out here much (made a couple posts here and there) but I keep a very close eye on the newsletters and it is wonderful to know you are nearby mouser! I hail in Peoria (just 30 minutes by the way the crow flies) and one of my employers branches I visit frequently is right in your neck of the woods. Wow if only you had mentioned this in Novembers newsletter I would have booked it for sure... Hope you do it again next year... if so I would love to learn and share with a lovely yule tide beverage and some New Years munchies. Best to you and yours!

Chrome is pretty amazing...clean... DC renders extremely fast (compared to IE and Opera) of course I am a bit of a Google zealot... there are some things it is lacking but at first blush... she's a beaut! My 2 peas about it :D

Living Room / MySQL GUI (User front end - not admin) ideas? Options?
« on: September 02, 2008, 10:23 AM »
Hello all,

I have been a DBA with MySQL (which I absolutely love) for a few years now. I am not gonna claim I know everything there is to being a DBA but the whole experience has been a pleasure. The front ends (for the users I support)  have always been developed by others and I simply managed the back-end in conjunction with the FE developers. I have now decided to make my foray <sp?> into GUI devleopment and wonder if anyone has any suggestion for a FE app that would help in conjunction with MySQL. Unfortunately I would like to stay away from the pure web development (PHP/ASP coding etc - I can handle it a little but it makes me nervous) if possible but would get over my nervousness asap if that is my only option.

So far the ideas I have found in my search have been MSAccess, Which I have been using for a long time and am quite comfortable with but gets expensive quickly, and an app called DBACentral (found here. which I know almost nothing about but it has a web form interface creator that looks interesting.

Unfortunately I don't quite get the microolap/DBACentral app as far as end user (FE) development and whether I will need to purchase end user licenses (as I have basically done with MSAccess for about 9 users now). Futuristically speaking we will be developing for at least 40 or 50 more users and so far the microolap app looks better than MSAccess on the cost side. The one thing that makes me nervous is that I have always been put off by "vague" advertisements (which is what DBACentral seems to be doing) that don't tell me what I will need (at the time of purchase) if I am ready to develop for a large user base. I feel like they are trying to snag me into buying and then say "oh and by the way if you need it for ten more users that will cost you...blah blah blah" UGH!

Does anyone out here have any other ideas for user (FE) Gui development and MySQL? Has anyone used the DBACentral app?

One note: This current app will be a field service type of application where in some instances the end user will NOT be connected while using the app and will later connect to "sync" the data entered while out in the field.

I hope I haven't yammered on too much and am happy to give more info if needed.
...and of course any suggestions feedback or help would be greatly appreciated!!

Kind regards,

Zjooj

I have to interject!! Nighted, you slay me!!  :Wizard: too funny!!

Pretty sure I saw a post in the current newsletter about this forums "gentle" nature. There has been more than one occasion in this post alone that someone could have started a flame war and been pissy but all just let it roll off and fire back another smart-a$$ comment. I love it!! Just love it...proud to be a part!! Thanks
