General Software Discussion / Integrate Mouser's/DCs software into Scoop.sh - extra

Hi,

Long time DC user, not very frequent to the forums though (sorry).

Recently started using https://scoop.sh, which finally provided a very clean, very extensible command line software repository for Windows users.

I was hoping to raise enough interest here so that we might get to see the excellent software available here in the extra repo, which is the 'general software' repo.

I might even start doing it myself, just not sure I'm the right person/have the right capabilities to do so effectively.

Revisiting this, as it seems I neglected @mouser's response (apologies for this), I believe I posted this originally when I was really busy, and never really returned back to see what the answer was.

So, mouser, to answer your question - all of it: the #1 and #2 automatic detection - when these work, it's awesome!. And all of the manual tweaking and setting of margins is fantastic when the automatic detection don't work.

I use the editor manually today (with it's great drag and drop stitching), but moving a notch by single pixels is rather uncomfortable compared to how the final step of the scrolling capture tool.

So - what I would really like to see, this final step as a standalone action/application that can be fed a png/jpeg.

I cannot express how useful Screenshot Captor is to my life. (I believe it's time to add some donation money  )

Anyway, my love today is director to the Scrolling window cropping step (the last step of the scrolling capture).
I would really like to see this as a 'standalone step'.

Why would this be useful you ask? Good question.

I use remote control sessions quite a lot - and take screenshots while on those sessions.
This introduces 2 limitations:

• Time - I collect screenshots to preserve time, and have a 'local view' of what I saw remotely.
  For this reason I have SC setup to save the capture automatically without interfering or asking what to do with the capture.
  
• The 'object' of interest is remote, embedded in the local 'remote session' window.
  This means that SC can't 'pick out' the region out of a 'flat image' (which is the remote session).

After the session is over, I summarize my thoughts/findings and make use of the screenshots.

For remote scrolling content, I've made it a habit to use the "Grab selected Region" option, followed by the "Grab Repeat last size+pos" and grab multiple images at the same location (after scrolling manually).
Later, using the excellent drap-n-drop option in the editor window, I combine them into a single scrolling capture, and I manually "Splice Out" with the SpecialFX2 menu item.

If I cold launch the Scrolling window cropping wizard on the combined file, it would make this process a lot faster.

Can the scrolling window cropping wizard be launched explicitly? (I searched the forum, but couldn't find information about this)
If so how?
If not, I'd love to see this as an update.

The responses here are great! This is why I love this community.

I agree with the insights here.
The only thing working for WOX is the integrated plugin distribution system.

Things I like, but are a matter of taste: it's 'cleaner', and seems to be very quick.

As for the other one, Keypirinha, it's just 'nice'.

Neither of them provides a way to copy the path to the clipboard, and FARRs weighted search model is 2nd to none.

Once again, FARR leads the way, and becomes the golden standard of launchers (at least for me).

As for some of the other suggestions:
- Windows 10 - a nice idea, but very flawed, it's only 'merit' is that 'it is already there' (a bit like M$ browsers).
- I'll check out the others.

Again, thanks to this community which started with Mouser, the tools provided here are the best, and they keep improving.

Interesting thread, there is actually a tool to clear-out 'low quality' reviews and weed-out commissioned-reviews: fakespot.com

While it might not be visible on the default site's display-style, fakespot utilized data received by APIs so I assume it will take into account those negative votes on reviews.

Find And Run Robot / Alternatives / Competition

FARR has been my companion for years now.
Along with Screenshot Captor they are the essential DonationCoder software I MUST have on any machine I call 'home'.

But, I'm a software geek, and I always check out alternatives (alternativeto.net has been a dream come true when it started out).

Today I've learned about 2 projects, which I feel this is the only place I would rather discuss them. However they are 'competition', so if anyone feels it's inappropriate, I'll happily remove this post.

The software:
1. An open-source project named Wox
2. A freeware named Keypirinha

First (and very early) impression:
One thing I found in Wox (still checking out Keypirinha) is an automated package manager.

I'm unclear yet about the amount of actively developed plugins, but Everything integration seems to be shipped with the basic build (which FARR supports with an excellent plugin of it's own).

Have anyone here had experience with any of those?
Any insights about those projects, what are the main differences to FARR?

Any other alternatives?

I've been a devout user of DC software for 7 years now, and I think what mouser built here is one of the best communities on the net.
Thanks to everyone who participates here.

And now my request.
Does anyone know, (or knows how to build one), if there is a FARR plugin that will search trough AD users and groups?
I'm looking for something that will make searching for users and groups, with membership easy as pie, as FARR makes it for file content.

Hopefully someone here has the answer.

This time I was the confusing one - sorry.

It worked perfect: yes the ConfigDir value is used, and yes even if it didn't exist before, it created it.

My note was not on what you stated in the forum, but what is stated in the ConfigDir.ini comments, the creation of the sub-folder according to the product.

BTW, it is the same for all other of your apps found on the site that had the configDir.ini, I created me a small script (cmd batch file) that creates a product specific configdir.ini for each folder that already had a configdir.ini in it.

if it makes any difference, I tested this only on my OS - Win7 64bit.

Thank Mouser,

added both PORTABLE=TRUE and CONFIGDIR=..\zData and it worked perfect.

My goal no is to hold all DonationCoder/Mouser applications in a singe folder tree (DonationCoder) where each application has it's own sub-folder, and the data is stored in a centralized location (the zData sub-folder - the "z" is there so it will be last when sorted by name).

One note though - in the configdir.ini file there is the followin statement:

[Select]

// NOTE: the company and application subdirectory name will automatically be
//  added to the path specified (except for %APPDIR% which includes the name
//  already, i.e.:
//    "E:\MyCleverSettings" -> "E:\MyCleverSettings\DonationCoder\AppName\"

But the DonationCoder\AppName in this case DonationCoder\ClipboardHelpAndSpell was not created under ..\zData
Is that by design, and the statement is wrong, or is it something that will change later on.

Anyway thanks for putting in such a basic configuration option, it makes your software even more useful now that I can synchronize it between computers, and keep a synchronized copy on my USB drive.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Portability of Clipboard Help+Spell

Hi Everyone (and Mouser)

I was wondering about CHS portablity, I noticed that there is a Database and Backup folders inside the program folder, but then noticed that the files used are located in my Documents\donationcoder\Clipboard Help+Spell folder.

Am I missing something? if so what?

Tried searching the forum board, but didn't find it (or was too lazy to skim through the board - sorry  )

As allways with DonationCoder.com in general and Mouser in particulat - Thanks for such an excellent piece of software.

I have registered, but the email was never received.
Plus the username is no longer available - probably meaning that the account has registered correctly.
Tried sending the password via email, nothing is received either.

Anyone had this happen to them too?
or is it just me?

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I have found this Shareware solution, which seems like exactly what I was looking for.

It's a replacement management console for controlling network mounts - with an added value of re-mounting TrueCrypt drives which are avilable on network mounts.

A bit of overkill for what I wanted, but as of now it's the only solution I found that keeps the network mounted drive live.

I wonder if there is a DonationCoder out there who can make a simpler/smaller (maybe better suited) solution instead of NDM.

I'll test-drive the new software, and let you know if it does what it should.

Hi all,

I can't seem to find a simple command line solution for the issue.

I use 3 "endpoints" on my home network:
- a desktop
- a laptop
- a Networked Media Tank (media streamer)

I have mapped network drive on both desktop and laptop pointing to the other computer and the NMT.
Sometimes the mapped drives get to a disconnected/unavilable state (when running "net use" from command line) and can't be accessed from certain application or the command line.

The only way to "refresh" the connection - without removing it and re-establishing it - is either to open Windows Explorer and click on the drive (I also use Total Commander, which works also).
But I can't find a good command line solution where I give it the drive letter, and it makes sure it's connected.

What I'm looking for is a command line tool that will act as described above, for example:
  refresh-smb-drive T:

will make sure T: is connected and active before returning control.

Hope this is simple enough for you excellent and bright guys.

LiberKey is a fantastic portable package of auto-updateable tools, created by a french group.

The product is very polished, and quite amazing, I highly recommend any DonationCoder fan to test it out.

I just posted a request for them to check out FARR and consider to add it as one of their packages.

I started answering you and wrote the requirement again (if you'd really like to read it, it's in the quoted text below) but then it struck me, that what I was askeing for can be done a lot simpler.

So here is a revised requirement, and if I'll get a positive response I'll change or repost the new IDEA, since it is alot simpler.

here it goes:

1. Prepare application watch list, preferable by specific executable path.
2. Each application in the watch list, has two commands attached to it, one that is performed on startup, and another performed after shutdown.
3. Application sits idley until a process from the watch-list is activated.
4. Change the priority of the launched app to idle.
5. Run the command for startup of the launched app.
6. when startup command ends, assign the original priority to the launched app.
7. wait of the launched app to end.
8. when the process is cleared from the system, the shutdown command initiates.

does this make better sense?

The previous detailed idea (mostly garbage now :-) )

Not exactly - I don't really need all of gamebooster's functionality, what I do want is a way to create sets of application that when an application of a specific set is activated all application in the opposite set are shutdown, and when the application is complete, those apps will be started up again (using command line switches that were previously defined).


So the application will have a list of application definitions, most of these would be windows startup stuff, but can be modified manually:
babylon translator
resource monitors (cpu, harddrive, etc..)
quick launchers / autohotkey scripts
microsoft outlook
IM clients (Messenger, Google Talk, Digsby, etc..)

this list will have the process names and initialization parameters defined (can be taken from the registry of manual).

Another list - an applications watch list. These will be the high resource consumption stuff, like multimedia and games.

Whenever an application in the watch list activates, the applications on the 1st list will shutdown and free up resources and hotkeys etc.

as to Gamebooster - it's fine - but it doesn't let you define the list of stuff to shut down.

Hope I got it simpler now.

It's actually great, since it's the best there is now.
I'm suggesting something different (not necessarily better), it's for the control freak types, that like to have more control over each process.
What I'm suggesting is a hybrid of the existing method, which will still be available - and another more fine-grained control that let's you decide during the startup what's going to happen - but with a "zoom out" view instead of a micro view of each step in the startup process.

- yes, so am I. But I *expect* the expressed need is to immediate add those program you disabled some previous time the editor was open. This you cannot do, for now, until the ongoing startup procedure had ended.

I'm using the latest version (always have). And the check boxes that are there, are for disabling or enabling the apps on a permanent basis, and in the editing GUI only.

The idea is to provide the same functionality with an aditional button that extends the GUI for last minute control of the application startup list - instead of the one-by-one control.

I really hope someone would get interested enough.

The problem:
My company bought several licensed copies of UnrealTournament and when there's some time we startup the game and play a quick LAN game.

The thing is that we run the game on a business PCs and Laptop (That's why we play a 1999 game).
Most of the applications that make sense during the workday are loaded automatically - and I like keeping it that way.
One example is Babylon Translator which is activated by the Mouse Middle click.

What I propose is an small software that sits in the SysTray and keeps track of which applications are already loaded and which are just being launched.

Once an application on the watchlist is launched, there is a profile of applications that should shutdown immediately.
Once the watchlist application terminates, those same application that were shutdown would start again.

So if I have on my watchlist:
UnrealTournament.exe

and the conflicting app list for it is, for example:
babylon.exe
outlook.exe
iexplorer.exe
firefox.exe

then when I fire-up UnrealTournament.exe - babylon, outlook, iexplorer and firefox would shut-down.
and those same apps will restart the moment UnrealTournament.exe would terminate. (a delayed approval box would make sense in case it's a failure on the part of the Game).

I found out an application that comes close, but is run manually - I want something automatic. And the application's profile is automatic, I wish for manual / config file control.

Hope this is of some interest to at least one of you guys.

I've had this idea since DOS had the option to provide a delayed startup of it's config.sys and autoexec.bat files via a keyboard click.

And ever since I found Startup Delayer from r2 studios I've been using it, and it's great.
The editing GUI is actually fantastic, although some tweaks would be even better, bet overall it's fantastic, and cover everything needed.

But....
The startup launching GUI is a bit too simplistic, and could be enhanced with a simple functionally which is currently missing:

A better handling of the startup process, namely:
- provide an expand button that will display the current list of delayed application which are scheduled to run.
- provide check-boxes near each item, allowing on-the-fly disabling/enabling of startup apps.
- [next step] drop down list of predefined "startup sets" which have different sets of applications enabled.

adding these to the startup delayer starter GUI would improve my life tenfold.

NOTE: The code snack should only implement the Startup launcher GUI and not the editor GUI - it currently works pretty well.
So the new code snack should read the settings from r2 Studio's Startup Delayer ini files. (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\r2 Studios\Startup Delayer\ and the user folder too)

Hope you get interested enough to check out the software and to improve it, if you find the challenge in par to you skills.
