FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Timer
« on: October 13, 2008, 09:45 AM »
also try to deleted and install timer
I delete the timer and reinstalled it (by downloading the Zip file as it wasn't listed in DCUpdater after deleting it for some reason).  Once reinstalled I got the internet explorer settings box showing (exactly the same before (ie. with setting details in it)). I then clicked on send and it all seemed ok. DCUpdater is listing it and shows the same version as before (1.01.13).

It will now accept timers if I press enter, but it still doesn't accept period/full stop. From my point of view it now works and is easy to use.  However, somebody else might still have a problem as the forum tends to refer to period rather than pressing enter. So I'm happy but it might need a look to make the documentation clearer for other people.

Thanks for the help on this.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Timer
« on: October 13, 2008, 02:27 AM »
It should work without period as well just by hitting enter. try to type "tm settings" and check if everything is set correctly
Period doesn't seem to do anything.

Pressing enter just results in the timer message window closing and FARR showing "Found 0 results in 0 seconds" under the input box.

If I then type "tm" into the input box it says "Next event in: no timer set" at the bottom of the timer message window.

If I type "tm settings" then it display the mainly blank timer message window (with the "TYPE:" message at the top, date and time at the bottom and the "no timer set" message at the bottom). Then after a few seconds the "timer settings - windows internet explorer" box opens).

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Timer

I've read this thread and searched the whole of the forums but I still can't get this to work.

If I type (for example)

tm in 20 Hello

then I get the message box with all the details of the countdown (20 seconds, text: hello), so far so good. But I can't get it to accept the entry.

This thread seem to imply that I need to press period (.) but that doesn't work. It just puts adds the period to the entry. I've also tried enter, tab .... with no success. I can't find any way to get it to accept the countdown.  Am I doing something wrong or is this a problem with me having a UK rather than US keyboard (altough Period / Full Stop are both in the same place).

Find And Run Robot / Launch Method: Method 2 - ShellExecuteEx
« on: September 02, 2008, 06:21 AM »
The two launch methods are either ShellExecute or ShellExecuteEx.  But as I don't understand the difference between these two API functions I'm not sure what the difference is. Can anybody provide an explanation.

I ask because at some point I switched to method 2 (either I was just playing around or it was to solve some issue). The problem is that method 2 doesn't launch RDP (remote desktop configuration files) I get an error "The parameter is incorrect".

If it helps these are RDP files (and not shortcuts to RDP files) in the start menu. They work fine if I use the start menu to launch them.

Find And Run Robot / Re: ctrl+Space : Anyway to stop it

Thanks Mouser.  I didn't see it down there under lists. I guess I was assuming it would have been up in the General or Keyboard interface section.

Find And Run Robot / ctrl+Space : Anyway to stop it
« on: August 26, 2008, 02:12 PM »
Is there anyway to stop FARR using the Ctrl+Space hotkey to open itself up?

I have another application that uses Ctrl+Space (just within the application not as a universal hotkey) and I can't use it because FARR takes control as soon as I press Ctrl+Space. I only use Break to launch FARR so the loss of Ctrl+Space wouldn't affect me, but I guess it would affect others. Is there an option to turn this on/off or even better a way to set a custom key combination to launch FARR?

Find And Run Robot / Re: Aliases - at a loss with them
« on: July 10, 2008, 05:51 PM »
If I understand what you want then you need the following

have an alias I can add things to, along the lines of the mygames example, as a kind of handy container for groups of frequently used files.
-Smith-Corona (July 10, 2008, 02:16 PM)

1. Create an alias of say "myfiles"
2. Set the results to be the list of files you want. For example:

g:\rubbish\tax2.xls
z:\photolist.txt
p:\isorecorder.txt

You should now get the list of files when you enter "myfiles" just press enter for the one you want.

have aliases for certain frequently used directories, so I can narrow the search down to them straightaway. Eg I often know that the file I'm looking for is somewhere in the tangle of directories underneath My Documents, so I want FARR to start there and not bother looking anywhere else. So I would have an alias "md" say, whose "result" would be the My Documents folder and would save me the bother of typing out c:\documents and settings\etc\etc every time. then I could just type "md obscurefile.txt" for something I knew was somewhere in My Documents.
-Smith-Corona (July 10, 2008, 02:16 PM)

I'm not sure this needs an alias. I think the way to get this to work is as follows:

1. Add a new search folder
2. Set the directory path to be "C:\Documents and Settings\[UserName]\My Documents"
3. Set a keyword modifier of "md"

To use it type something like "+md obscurefile.txt" or "obscurefile.txt +md" and it should work

8
Right clicking on results feels a bit odd in FARR because is "the ultimate program for keyboard maniacs", you type what you want and FARR does it. Typing something and then using the mouse doesn't seem to quite fit in with FARR.  I can't see a problem with right click (if people want to use right click then why not) but I wouldn't want it to become the only way of doing things.

Whilst not a right click it is possible to set up an alias to achieve this sort of thing.  Give the alias the name "cmd" and a result of: cmd.exe /k cd /d "$$1"

Then you can type things such "+cmd c:\program files" or "c:\program files +cmd" and FARR will open the command prompt in the requested folder.

i can use that to avoid adding removable links to history.
I'm not sure about avoiding adding removable links to the history. I have a USB pen drive in my machine with a range of portable apps that I use very frequently. Then when I'm on the road I just take the pen with me.  From my point of view if FARR never added anything on USB pen drive to the history then the history facility would be much less useful.

Is there way FARR could filter the history list and not use things on a removable drive if the removable drive isn't there? If speed is the issue then maybe FARR could just check the removable drives when it starts, then if the drive isn't there it filters the history for that session.

Find And Run Robot / Launch History and non-program items
« on: June 27, 2008, 01:19 PM »
I can see that launch history records the programs the get launched, but can it store other things?

For example:

If I type "Search" then FARR will list the results from the search alias (google, yahoo, msn ...). I can just press Enter and the first entry will be used.  But suppose I choose "ask" from the list (number 5 on the list I see), it opens up ASK in my browser. Fine so far.

Now if I type "Search" again I get exactly the same results in the original order. So even if I keep selecting the "ASK" entry it never rises up the list to become the default.

Is there any way the launch history can remember things like this as well?

Find And Run Robot / Re: HTMLViewer and CSS
« on: June 26, 2008, 04:55 PM »
I don't have an opinion as to whether it should be a plugin or part of the core FARR, thats is for mouser to decide the best way to do it (if he decides this is a worthwhile addition).

From an end user's point of view I think the ideal would be to download a package which included the alias, css file and javascript file all in one go. I guess it would also be nice if the package could contain more than one set of alias/css/javascript files together. In addition DCUpdater would be able to update the package replacing the CSS/Javascript files if, for example, the layout of the webpage changes.

Find And Run Robot / HTMLViewer and CSS
« on: June 26, 2008, 10:20 AM »
Is there any way to get a webpage to open in the viewer and then apply a local CSS file to it.

It seems to me that a lot of webpages have useful information on them but just occupy too much space on screen to work nicely in the viewer. I was wondering if you could specify the URL and the CSS name in the FARR's Alias. FARR would then open the URL in the mini-viewer and then apply the CSS. The CSS would then strip away all the unwanted bits.

I guess there are ways to do this with some of the existing add-ins or a new add-in. I just wondered if there was something more simple available.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Searching network shares
« on: June 26, 2008, 10:16 AM »
I was specifically thinking of typing in the UNC name rather than following UNC paths in shortcuts. Its mainly because I have a few shares on my server and the kids' machines which I occasionally need to access but which I don't want to assign a drive letter to due to Windows only having 26 drive letters available. It is mainly so I can type "\\servername\share" and have windows explorer open rather than anything else. What I do at the moment is type "c:\" into FARR press Enter, then when explorer opens I press home and then type "\\servername\share" which whilst working is a bit more work than I'd like.

14
isn't the order just top to bottom in the list of which directories to search? Is there more to it than that? (Except tweaking search depth and scores)
I guessed that was the order but it isn't clear. FARR does have the ability to add something in the middle of list of directories but it doesn't have the common "move up" "move down" buttons to change the order, so you have to delete an item and add it back in.  It is probably a case that the ordering works but a few tweaks to the user interface would make it clearer and easier to use.

Find And Run Robot / Searching network shares
« on: June 24, 2008, 01:00 PM »
If, for example, I type "C:\" then I can browse through the c drive. I can also get to sub folders by typing "c:\windows\" for example

Is there any way this can be done for network shares without mapping them to a drive letter. For example if I type "\\servername\" then can FARR list the shares on the server. Windows explorer can do this sort of thing so I assume suitable APIs exist.

16
I'm not too worried about indexing. What I'd like is a little more control over the search directories, so it was clear which order they were searched in and the order could easily be changed.  This would mean that the folders with the things I use most (eg. the start menu) would be searched first and show in the results quickly, other folders  (eg. my music collection) would take longer.

If FARR is then more responsive during searching I could then easily select things from the most important folders (eg. start menu) without waiting whilst it gets stuck on some of the other folders.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Multi-selecting in dropdown list
« on: June 06, 2008, 07:19 AM »
Excellent idea.

I'm not sure how much I would use it for multiple programs but it would be great for multiple bookmarks or things like web searches.

18
i may have to make a little mini toolbar for the htmlview mode with options like "open in browser", refresh, etc.  and i guess an address bar too.

I'm not sure abot a mini-toolbar and address bar.

The sort of things I'd expect the viewer to be used for are:
  • Formatting of results (I'm thinking here more of the current memo/notes view rather than the current list)
  • Stripped down content scraped from a page on the web
  • Specialist links to things such as a file on the local file system or another page (which would be generated by the plugin)

The thing is some of these things wouldn't work if the page was passed to a normal browser, so I don't immediately see why the mini HTML viewer needs to have the functions of a normal web browser. Such things would seem to fill up space without adding much.

Maybe we need to consider in a bit more detail what plugins would use the viewer and whether they should use the viewer or just the current system. Then the viewer can contain the required functionality without becoming too complicated.

19
I'd also vote to take over the escape key. This would keep it consistent with the way FARR already works.

Will it be possible to embed special types of links in the HTML. For example a link that launched a local file or that started a FARR search? (subject to some suitable security to stop pages from the web launching files).

Find And Run Robot / Re: Alias sharing
« on: May 29, 2008, 11:13 AM »
Thanks for the encouragement.

  • When I update the pack then I'll update the instructions to put it into the Installed folder
  • As to webspace I assume this means I'd just put the link to the file into any posts and everybody then always gets the latest version. If so this seems a good idea and I'm happy to go ahead with this (though I might need a few pointers to get it all working!)

Find And Run Robot / Re: Alias sharing
« on: May 28, 2008, 02:02 PM »
Attached are a set of aliases for users in the UK. I started this set to add UK sites to FARR's core aliases.

For example this set adds maps.google.co.uk to the maps Search alias. This ensures a search for say Reading returns Reading, Berkshire rather than Reading, PA.

As well as additions to the FARR's core aliases I have added a couple of other sets (newspapers and weather) for UK sites.

Just unzip the file and put the UK direction under AliasGroups\MyCustom
