Living Room / Re: I need advice: which laptop to buy?
« on: January 17, 2011, 09:21 AM »
Lenovo has 15" T510 laptops starting at $880.  If you can find some coupon codes, or whenever they go on major sale, you may even get more discounts.  They are still more expensive than most other brands but the premium you pay is for the durability (roll-cage design) and some other niceties.

They have a Full HD (1920x1080) LED display option, but you gotta pony up for that +$250.

Actually, I might be misunderstanding this feature, as it is about adding parameter values when calling up aliases.  I was confusing this with the proposed feature of handling objects and actions as covered in some previous discussions:

https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=11487.0
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=2277.0
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3713.0

This would be a specific use-case where the 'action' is actually an implicit "Launch X, with Y as a parameter" when "X ++ Y" is entered.  For example, I'm trying to launch notepad with a file that is within FARR's search paths.  Ideally, I'd like to be able to type "no" and then have notepad appear on the list, type tab, to complete it, followed by "++".  Typing "myt" will then find a file called mytext.txt in the search paths.  Essentially after typing ++, it starts a new search based on what ever is typed after the "++".  Everything before the "++" is assumed to be a valid launch item (whether it be a path to an executable or an alias), and not included in the new search.  When that file shows up in the search list, type tab again if it's the first item to autocomplete resulting in something that looks like this in the FARR entry box :

C:\WINDOWS\system32\notepad.exe ++ C:\somesearchpath\mytext.txt

Hitting enter should then open notepad with mytext.txt as the parameter.

Anyway, will look forward to mouser implementing the object -> action feature one day.  For now, being able to to launch items with parameters added on the fly is a good start! :)

Hi Steve,
I've been a long time user of xplorer2, and although I have not compared it against TC and other popular ones, it has fit my usage well.  It is quite lightweight, with a good set of features.  The one I use a lot is the 'scrap' window container, whereby you can flatten out the contents of various directories (not necessarily from the same parent) into a single window to be manipulated or monitored.  Also, once you get a hang of the various shortcut keys, there're a wealth of features at your disposal.

The license allows for either multiple computer installations for one user, or single computer for multiple users.  It's your choice ;)

Just discovered this undocumented feature with the recent release.  It's exactly what i've been looking for.

Can this be further improved so that once ++ or whatever special character has been activated, the incremental search can kick in for the new parameters, i.e. file browsing mode to allow launching a program with a file as its parameter?

similarly, the Windowpad (search around these forums) autohotkey-based program allows you to press Appkey-Spacebar to move your maximized window from one monitor to another.

General Software Discussion / Re: New Windows boot manager available
« on: September 20, 2008, 11:48 PM »
alternatively, have you guys tried grub4dos? It basically leverages your existing boot manager in 2k/XP or Vista to allow you to boot other non-windows OSes.  It's still grub, but you don't have to replace the MBR or partition boot record if you don't want to.

update: edit spelling for grub4dos

would be great if it could directly access FF3's bookmarks, *as well as* search all open tabs by name, and bring those up when matched :)

maybe it needs a FF extension to be installed in order to expose these features? i swear one of these days, i'm gonna look into how to write a FF plugin... hopefully before FF6 comes out ;)

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Recentx at Giveawayoftheday
« on: May 07, 2008, 04:58 AM »
dantheman, thanks for the feedback regarding the %MYRECENTDOCS% variable.  Maybe the reason I'm hitting this might be due to the fact that I haven't installed FARR.  Have been running out of a unzipped folder as I normally try to run these smaller apps without installation in an Limited User Accounts if possible.  Will try it again in the future when I have FARR properly installed.  For now, I just added the User\Recent folder in manually.

Regarding getting FARR to just show recently used docs, as opposed to everything it normally finds, I added "recent *" into the keyword entry for the Search Folders entry.  This way, if I know I'm just looking for a recently accessed file/folder, I can just type in "+recent" (followed by any additional search terms) into the FARR search box, and it will show just those entries.  Not that it is as elegant looking as RecentX, but I think it would be a reasonable approximation of its features.

Anyway, I'm just looking around for more ways to be efficient so it's good to learn about new programs.

Additional to TMP, I also use ChromaTabs https://addons.mozil...S/firefox/addon/3810 so that the color of the tab is related to the color of the favicon.  Makes it easier to find groups of tabs that are from the same site...

Do note that there used to be incompatibilities between ChromaTab and TMP, and it required some hacking of the .xpi files to get it working.  Not sure if the latest version still has this issue as I think I'm still using the hacked ChromaTab xpi..

I just briefly tried it out, but was wondering what significant benefits it has over FARR if you set FARR to automatically bring up the recent files/folders ".lnk"s that are in your C:\Documents and Settings\User\Recent folder.

Incidentally, I think one of the default Search Folders in FARR isn't working, %MYRECENTDOCS%.  Anyone see this problem as well?

I just discovered an application sandbox program called Sandboxie http://www.sandboxie.com/.  It allows you to run programs in a virtual sandbox but without the full overhead of running a PC virtualization environment like VMware.  While the program runs, it'll still be able to read from your files if you set it to, but it will not be able to write or modify any files as well as the registry (it will think it has, but it really hasn't).

In your quest to keep your system clean though, I'm not sure if Sandboxie itself leaves any traces on your PC since it is nagware and crippleware...  ;)

How about a plugin for the saved sessions in Putty?  Launchy has it...

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: farrfox without ff?
« on: April 06, 2008, 10:45 AM »
Would be great to have a general way of display the general results of files and programs along with the results of certain plugins (as decided by the user).  In this case, having the bookmarks and the tabs from Firefox show up on the list without having to type ff would be extremely helpful.

I hope that mouser can eventually get this to work.  I was trying all kinds of way to get additional results to show without having to type the alias keyword (even tried to use the noresult keyword), but it didn't quite have the desired effect.  I think a good reference point is Enso, and how they claim to be able to show bookmarks and the open tabs on Firefox automatically...

Would love to have this feature to be implemented.  As I use a notebook and connect to a external monitor off and on everyday, it would be good to not lose the focus of the FARR input box :)
