It's been over two years since we last had a fundraiser for the site, and so we're long overdue.. It's time for the..
MARCH 2009
4th Anniversary
DonationCoder.com Fundraiser

First of all let me say to everyone who has participated on the site over the last 4 years, that it's been my real pleasure and honor to meet and talk to all of you. This website has been the highlight of my life during that time. I don't expect everyone to feel that way, but I hope you at least feel like the site has brightened your day a little, once or twice.
It's never easy asking for money (that's why I've avoided running a fundraiser for 2 years), but that time has come where we need to raise some extra cash to help pay for our hosting costs and other expenses, and to help fund future projects.
Donations to the site from ordinary people have made all the difference in the world. They have made it possible for this site to remain advertisement free and pay for a now pretty heavy duty pair of web servers that run us almost $6000 a year in hosting costs.
Thinking back to the early days of the site when we were running off a $20/month shared hosting plan brings a real smile to my face. We are currently serving about 30gb of traffic and a million hits each and every day. I think that's pretty remarkable.
It was money from donations that made it possible for us to send dozens of mugs and shirts out as rewards for people who participated in the last freeware programming challenge we had. It's true we can't afford to send out giant monetary prizes like the big companies do, but we are proud of what we do, and proud of where our money comes from. For me personally, the donations make it possible for me to spend more time working on the website and software for the site, and interacting with users; and I can't think of anything I'd rather be doing.
Most of all, donations have made it possible for this site to stay true to itself, and have made being part of the site something I think everyone involved in can be proud of and feel good about.
If you've already donated to the site and are not in a position to donate again -- don't think twice about it, we're grateful for your support.
But if you've not yet donated, or can spare a little more, permit me, on behalf of site, to ask you to take the trouble to make a donation now (https://www.donationcoder.com/Donate/index.html). I can promise you that we will put it to good use as we work hard to make this site even better in the coming year.
-mouser (jesse)
ps.
Cody (our bird/duck mascot) has insisted I tell people that if they cannot make monetary donations, he would be happy to receive chocolate coins in gold foil wrappers, or else hand drawn pictures of himself to hang on his wall.

good luck!

I did that on purpose, to see who was paying attention. :-[

hehe, do I get a 'Paying attention-badge' now?
-
No but i might give you a smart alec (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smart_Alec) award.

That'll do for me 8)

Does anyone want to try to make an attractive looking mini button on banner that people could put on their websites or blogs that would show their support of DC and maybe encourage others to visit and donate?
Some starting points:

I donated my last dollar to the site (yeah i am poor) but am a little confused, do i also have to give my Donation coder credits to the general site account to complete the donation? btw it's pretty cool that the banner changes when more money is donated, the pot growed by over 200 bucks in less than two minutes which is pretty fast.

mouser's probably hoping you'll contribute once per anum.
-
Just making the donation is sufficient.
If you want you can give out your donation credits to specific people on the site or to the general site account - that's still supporting the site and so it counts towards fundraiser money. Many people never bother with the donationcredits system, and that money eventually just filters into the site account over time, so that's fine too.

no and no.
-
Something to think about.
How would any of us feel if DonationCoder 404'd because mouser had decided enough was enough.
Suppose he and the unsung heroes who keep things on track just decamped?
Wouldn't like that at all?
If that is so, then drop whatever you can spare into the donation kitty... do it now!
-
Well that's it.. remember what happened to FastTracker II (survived on donations)?
FT2 has been put on hold indefinitely. [...] If this was an ideal world, where there was infinite time and no need to make a living, there would definitely be a multiplatform Fasttracker3. Unfortunately this world is nothing like that,"-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FastTracker_2

mouser is just being frugal.
Times are tough. Extra N's are expensive. :P
-
So when I want to contribute to the fundraiser I only have to send my Donation Credits to the site fund?
-
That would be appreciated too of course, but it won't add to the fundraiser thermometer, only "new" money coming into the site does that.
-

In hard times, then, do you propose that N'y thing goes?

How automagic is the donation bar update? Do you have to manually process the PayPal stuff? :)

Ah... I was going to ask about that! I want to see that thermometer increase, so will inject some fresh cash into the site :)

Look at the top of forum. You can see the red liquid trying to reach the 8k mark. That whole instrument is called as thermometer. I tried to explain thinking i'm explaining to Mayans. :P

yes all of march.

By the way i submitted the donation appeal to digg.com (http://digg.com/software/Donationcoder_com_needs_your_help), i am not sure if it will help at all tough if anyone here has a digg.com account i suggest to digg the link for more exposure, that way more people can see it.

Btw, shouldn't the thermometer have gone *down* as the funding increases? Right now, it's more like "$6200 until Cody FEEEEVER!" :)

maybe it's the room temperature as code flaps about now having more energy.

I'm trying to think of some additional things we can do during this fundraiser month.
One thing of course is to work on updating software on the site, but that's not really anything special.
I think something that might be helpful to the site would be to ask everyone to participate in a little survey so we can get a feel for what parts of the site people think we should focus on, and get some suggestions about ways to improve, etc. That would be a way people could help.
Any other ideas?
-
Of course another way the coders who hang out at dc could help a *lot* would be to release some new programs or updates to existing programs this month.

Well I made my big infusion in February, so I can't commit more at the moment without my wife trying to steal my bank card for good, but I did give Donation Coder a little more exposure on CNET.com. They are currently highlighting several screenshot capture programs and completely missed ScreenShot Captor. So I bumped it. If they come here, they should see the donation push as well, even though I forgot about it so I didn't mention it.
-
Well I made my big infusion in February, so I can't commit more at the moment
one thing that has come up in discussions is the idea of offering something special to people who donate during the fundraiser that they wouldn't be entitled to if they donated before the fundraiser. while that might be a way to get more donations, it seems completely unfair and illogical to me, and we haven't ever done something like that. any donation that occurred prior to the fundraiser is at least as valuable if not more so than a donation now, so thank you!
second -- there is very little anyone can do to help this site more than just letting people know about the site when appropriate. because we dont have pr and marketing departments like big companies, it's really only by things like this that people find out about our programs, and they would often get overlooked if not for this. so thank you again, and thanks to everyone who ever makes a comment on blog post or software review pointing out when someone has overlooked a dc program that should have been included. [though please never be obnoxious or post about a program on dc that you don't personally use and like -- let it never be said that we encourage that kind of thing]

I definitely agree with this! I donated in Feb because I had a few extra dollars (a rare enough event!) that I could send and since it had been a while, I knew it was time to donate again. I knew about the fund raising drive before I donated and didn't wait mostly because I wouldn't still have the money in March (I would have spent it elsewhere and probably for less good!) I certainly feel I get more than my fair share out of the software I use from here, and giving back money as well as participation is only fair. Otherwise, getting this kind of software with this kind of developer response would be overwhelmingly expensive. In addition, I would loose a major source of information, as much of what I learn (news-wise) ends up coming from here long before I hear about it elsewhere. Only the headlines come from elsewhere. Interesting page 3 stuff comes from DC :)
-
Just donated, and feel great!
-
Looks like you're going to need a bigger thermometer :-[
Can't believe I just typed that!
-
Before anyone gets too excited by speed of growing thermometer.. i should point out that it's probably about to slow down substantially because the newsletter call for help has now gone out and been distributed, and that was our main way of reaching people who might be sympathetic to donating.

First of all..
Thank you to everyone who helped us reach our $8,000 goal for the fundraiser. It has been so wonderful watching the donations come in and watching Cody's temperature rise.
For those of you that expected the thermometer to explode when we reached $8,000 -- I apologize for the cruel trick of it expanding to $12,000. But just think of the people who haven't yet donated.. You don't want them to feel left out do you? They should still have a chance to participate.
Thank you everyone for making the fundraiser a success!
-mouser (jesse)
-
For those that expected some bigger fanfare when we hit our goal..
I hear from Nudone that Cody has been dancing and parading back and forth across the living room, celebrating, clanging pots and pans, and quacking up a storm.
-
To make up for the only modest changes to the banner when we reached our main goal.. We'll have to think of something special to happen if we manage by some miracle to somehow reach the new goal.
-
Congratulations DC for making the $8,000 donation goal! Thanks to everyone who donated and to everyone who makes DC a place worth donating to!

Out of curiosity, how many new supporting members have joined this month, and how does this number compare with a "normal" month for new supporting memberships? Enquiring minds want to know...

It's appropriate that the thermometer should move into the green on St. Patrick's day.

So we might not make the secondary goal of $12,000 but we just might make a $10,000 goal which would be FANTASTIC!!

Should i change the goal to $10k?

How about...Add the $8000 back, take out the $12000, and keep the green and current amount
Just a suggestion

We baked the cake already. Anything else is just icing. Nothing wrong with making a goal of 4 tubes of icing but only making it to 2.

That's a somewhat floury metaphor!

What is the official cut-off point for the fundraiser?
That is, the point at which donations will no longer affect the thermometer?
Does one assume that at midnight on March 31st (your time) the fundraiser total will become 'fixed'?
-
I think we should call the fundraiser over around midnight on April 1st, New York time.
(that is, it will go 24 hours into April by the NY time clock).

-
hey mouser if we reach 12,500 dollars are you going to raise the bar again?
it's automatic now it's just increasing because i don't know what else to do :tellme: :tellme: :tellme: :tellme: :tellme: :tellme:
-
i've added a new color to the bar and made the displayed goal just the nearest $100 ahead of current.
in other words -- i declare that we have OFFICIALLY crossed the finish line. we've reached our goal. we've put the second layer of icing on the cake. everyone can relax now. there is no further goal post. there is no need for anyone to donate any more unless they feel compelled for other reasons. the thermometer is just going to lead donations now by the nearest $100 -- and that's only because i don't want the mercury to overflow. On April 1st i will freeze the thermometer.

Thanx and congrats to all, deserved :)

Anything that makes it all easier for all of us.
And there is still the economy to worry about, so a heavy buffer is a better thing.
There is still more than 24 hours left here, and I say Push the limit.
Let's see how far we can go with it.
I say; let us not be done yet
Push folks, push

$13,000.00 :o
I know it is asking a lot, especially with less than 36 hours to go, but wouldn't $15,000.00 be nice?
Apparently there are a lot of folks doing what they can, and I must say it is a better turn out than I had expected, especially with things being tight these days.
I have been a member of this community for a short time, but in that time I now wonder where I was that I was not a member sooner.
I want to thank all of you, not just for donating, but for making this site worth while. A great atmosphere and place where I can find good stuff, good people, and ask questions without embarrassment.
Enough of the mushy stuff :P
Let's push this thing and see how far it can go
-
13 k :)

With so much wonderful energy, it seems even Cody is getting into the spirit!!!
Nick just sent me this polaroid photo he snapped of him:

Awww... he's so cute!

Looks like he made his cake out of coins to me. Clever bird!

$13,100.00(https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/esmileys/gen3/1Small/41.gif)
Let's keep going, if we can
-
Do mind if I ask...
How much did the site make last month on a generic non-fund-raiser month compared to this month?
-
How much did the site make last month on a generic non-fund-raiser month compared to this month?
good question -- i'll report when i summarize fundraising results in the next couple of days.
-
Have been watching with interest and admiration.
But I have to say that I'd hate to be a runner in the Mouser 'Mile' ;D
-
I was wondering how many of the 160,000+ users on the site have donated??? couple of thousand?
-
I was wondering how many of the 160,000+ users on the site have donated??? couple of thousand?
-techidave
I did not realize there are so many, if everyone would have just donated $2.......
-
Everyone probably thought the fundraiser was ending today, but I can now announce that I have decided the fundraiser should continue for at least another 60 days. In addition, the entire forum and website will be disabled and instead show an animated banner of cody dancing and begging for coins while background carnival music plays. The forum will return on June 1st or when we raise 1 million dollars, whichever comes later.. thank you for your participation.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Now you lnow that's not going to work, but I Have an Idea.
Official announcement:
I have taken Cody hostage.
Cody will be returned to DC upon the site being donated $1,000,000.00
If theses terms are not met in the next 24 Hours.
I will donate Cody to KFC.
April Fools Everyone.
Thanks for all you have done
-
In all seriousness i feel like there's something i should be doing to celebrate the end of the fundraiser.. something more dramatic..
well it's still running till the end of april 1st so that's still about 22 hours technically before it's over..
-
By donating, in our own way, we are all celebrating.
Do not worry about it, just do what you all do.
And we will be here.
What more can be done?
Because you do what you do, we have come to celebrate with you
If you want something dramatic, how about something simple?
A scrolling page of the donators, with a simple thank you from Cody.
Nothing fancy, just the user images, and statements, that you have up, but with a scroller (or slide show), with Cody holding a banner that says thanks for your support.
No amounts and no RL Names, as I am sure people have donated what they can, so an equal thanks to everyone for this 4th anniversary, and you can place it a small area of the page header on the right hand side. This will be part of the replacement banner once the thermostat/gage is gone.
By the way;
There is now less than 24 hours or Cody gets it.
Right in the fryer.
:hanged:
So all you out there Donate, and don't stop
-
Surprise a few members by making them mods for the day ;D
-
You could take the extra money over the $12,000 and donate it to a charity that allows you to name something related to it.
It would go along with the donation spirit, wouldn't be a massive amount at the last count and would do something really special.
I'm not sure what there is in your area but in our University they are trying to buy a new grand piano for the concert hall to replace a 20-30 year old steinway (http://www.turnersims.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=69&Itemid=86) that costs £70,000 (I think I have the name right). If you donate enough they will name a key after you which would be in the concert hall for the life of the piano.
Maybe there is a hospital or hospice or other worthy cause being renovated near you that can have a donationcoder brick placed in it.
Take some photos, put them up then send them to the tech news agencies with a press release.
You might even get more visitors and donations because of it.
-
I should clarify -- I wasn't even thinking of special things we might as a site do -- i was really just expressing that after all the newsletters and banners and special stuff we put up for the fundraiser, it feels like there should be a more formal "ending" to the fundraiser.. some kind of music/party/cake/confetti that would officially mark it as over.. rather then things just quietly slip back to normal..
-
I think the fault lies in me saying we would close the fundraiser at midnight on April 1, and then starting the celebration on March 31.
So backup.. rewind... undo celebrations.. and..
Fundraiser is still going!! We've got 17 hours left from the time i post this (midnight april 1 board time)!! It's exciting, it's fun, cody is doing his final dance as the coins hit the ground near his feet!

New thermometer image:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
yes!
ed. note: it was pointed out to me that the way the thermometer was always growing ahead of donations might make people feel like they were being tricked. i apologize if anyone felt that way. we didn't really start out with a fixed goal -- the idea was to run the fundraiser for a month and set a thermometer goal that seemed reasonable. and it wasn't clear to me the best way to show when we reached that initial goal but wanted to convey that donations were still being asked for. That's where the colors come in -- red was $8000, where we were really hoping not to fall short of, and then green ends at $12,000 which we didn't really expect to reach but were thrilled about.
-
Ya know, there is a slim (albeit very slim) chance that 15 is attainable, with where the donations are now, and that there is approximately 13 hours, if we could just get $100 an hour until midnight!
wishful thinking :)
-
slim isn't quite the right word hehehe.. ;D
we had a flood of donations during the 2 days that the newsletter reaches it's audience.. then we drop back down to normal.
let's not be greedy!!!! who cares about 15.. we surpassed our highest goal, let's be happy and celebrate.. we don't need any more donations.
-
agreed.
But there is something to said about wishful thinking.
And do not think for a moment that I am ungrateful to all those that have helped, especially with the economy in the shape it is in. Times are hard for all, with few exceptions. Time and money have both become very precious commodities, that can not be frivolously departed with, by anyone I would think.
Grateful does not even begin to explain what I am feeling.
I am a new member here, and after several communities over the years, I have never witnessed what I just witnessed over the last few days.
If this site ever needed a selling point, then it just made it.
Word of mouth is everything in by business, and word of mouth sells!
And actions speak louder than word!
All those who support with money, time, assistance, and code: it all just added up
And to think I just came and signed onto to get more information about CirleDock and Screenshot Captor, but I stayed, and found that I could help, and help I have.
I also found others that have helped me.
I just celebrated by helping and individual with CircleDock, before my surgery, When I got home, I found that I did indeed help.
For the first time I am understanding what it means when you hear; "The greatest pleasure is to serve"
Apologies for all the therapeutic nonsense :-[
I am beside my self, not quite understanding what I got myself into by joining this community, but am happy I did so.
The statement of I am not worthy comes to mind!

-
And do not think for a moment that I am ungrateful
sorry if i seemed to suggest i thought that -- i absolutely did not intend to!
in fact if i may say so, and i don't mean to turn this into a ritual of mutual appreciation.. but it's the existence of people like you who make this site so special. the forum can get pretty busy so many people probably don't know how you stumbled onto the site as a new user of circle dock which was coded by Eric Wong as part of a donationcoder project, and then you proceeded to hang around *helping* others with issues they were having with the program. that's pretty remarkable. and it's been really heartwarming to see. so honestly i have to say i think the site is lucky to have you around.
-
It's a bit late for this, but... when I saw the new thermometer for the first time I thought: ?! Did mouser close off donations already? Is this over? With 11 hours and change to go in the fundraiser, this may not be the message that DC wants to send ;)
-

-mouser
What I find remarkable is that with over 160,000 members mouser can recall these kinds of details about individual members. This is one of the "details" that makes this site so special
-
hey donations are never closed off.. but see my post above for why i thought it might be in poor taste to keep extending the thermometer. and in addition -- the more i thought about it, the more fitting it seemed that we spend the day with the thermometer fully filled and satisfied, so we can actually appreciate that we have reached our goals. It's nice isnt it -- after a month of watching it creep rightward, to see it completed? Give one a warm feeling.
-
What I find remarkable is that with over 160,000 members mouser can recall these kinds of details about individual members.
well let's be real -- there is a lot of activity on the forum, but we don't have 160,000 active posters on the forum.. now that would be hard to keep up with.
-
What would have happenned if we didn't reach the goal? would you have to shutdown the site?
-
What would have happenned if we didn't reach the goal? would you have to shutdown the site?
Absolutely not!
I should find where i wrote about this before, but it bears repeating:
We've all seen the results of these companies that were basically operating in a financial imaginary wonderland where they invented their own virtual money (and then sold themself fake insurance on it), etc. And how other big companies just operate in millions of dollars of debt a year and don't expect to ever make a profit, they just plan to sell out to google or whatever.
DC has always been, and will remain, a fairly low budget site that operates year by year, within the boundaries of the money it raises. It's so much simpler and saner that way.
When the site started we were on a $20 a month shared hosting server. That was fine while their was only a handful of people on the forum and not very many people were downloading our software.
The old timers here will remember how the site would start to slow down and drag and grind to a halt as we started to occasionally get overloaded with traffic.
As we've grown, our needs for more powerful servers has grown to.. To the point now where we have a pretty powerful dedicated main server that costs a few hundred dollars a month and handles 30gb a day of downloads, and a secondary smaller dedicated server that we use for member projects.
We are able to afford these serious servers, as well as some money to help defray server administration costs/time, because of the donations of people to the site.
Thankfully it seems likely that the relationship between traffic and donations will be enough to pay for appropriate hosting for the forseeable future. That is, if we are doing 30gb a bandwidth a day, it means we need a big dedicated server, but it also means we have enough people that we should be able to raise money to pay for hosting. If we got to the point where we couldn't raise enough money for our servers it would probably mean the site has dropped so low in usefulness that we wouldn't need such a big server.
Anyway, back to the point, which is simply that:
We are fully capable of living well within our means and living off of the donations we raise, and we will continue to do so. Site isn't going anywhere, regardless of how many people donate or how much. Period.
The donations are important though, because they make it possible for us to do things we otherwise wouldn't be able to do.. like be extravagent sometimes like with the prizes to for the last NANY event, and to give away mugs, etc. In the world of business we are talking about trivial amounts, but those amounts raised go a long way on a site like ours.
And for someone like me, receiving donations means the difference between being able to spend all of my time working on DC stuff -- or having to spend more time working on other paid work in order to pay bills.
The best part about DC though is what i said before -- DC is not trying to be a "profitable business" -- and that means we don't have to make decisions like a corporation would and figure out what's the best way to make money. Instead we can reverse the equation and say: let's do what we enjoy doing, and try to raise enough so we can continue doing it.
-
That was pretty long winded.
To summarize:
There will always be a DC as long as there are people here who want it to exist; we will simply scale and plan our activities and expenses to match the money we raise. Nothing more complicated than that.
-

Okay, thanks for the very detailed answer Mouser i was just curious. Also do you plan to use the extra money that the site raised right away or are you planning on saving it for a rainy day? i would prefer the latter since you never know what could happen in the future.
-
I still say a slideshow of the usernames, images, and quotes, with a thanks from Cody in the upper right side of the DC banner for thirty days would be great.
A kind of DC year book of Donaters for all who come to the site can see, and believe that there are real people who support this site.
-
supporter yearbook exists :)
https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=yearbook
Also do you plan to use the extra money that the site raised right away or are you planning on saving it for a rainy day?
i think some combination would be good.. maybe allocate $6000 for the next 12 months of hosting costs, but also keep eyes and ears open for some special things to spend some money on in the coming months.
in the past dc has never really had much spare money, that i just handled it all very informally, paying for all expenses out of pocket and reimbursing myself and using dc funds for my expenses as needed. for most of dc's life since 2005 i have put in so much time and the donations coming in have been small enough that it was never really an issue. i think we are probably at the point though where more rigorous accounting is needed.
and it's time to look at becoming an official non-profit again i expect. i looked into it at some point but got totally freaked out by the additional paperwork stuff.. right now we are at the stage where i'm paranoid about taking on things that will steal more of my time if they aren't needed.

Time's up.
What's the final Cody Coins tally?
-
And it's over!!!
I should consult with the board numerologists before i announce this but the tally as of now is:
$13,838.
Note: i have not disabled the thermometer updater so it's going to keep ticking up until i do.
:) IT'S OVER! :)
-
That's almost 173% higher than the initial target... awesome.
-
Hopefully it's enough to save Cody from his blackmailer. ;D

The only thing left to say is: THANK YOU.

Truth is the thing that will stick with me from this fundraiser was not that we raised so much more than we hoped, but how wonderful everyone has been about it. It has reinvigorated me and made me realize how lucky i am to be here with all of you. And you know I was dreading having to do this fundraiser, but you guys and gals made the whole thing fun. That means so much to me. Could not have asked for anything more. Thank you everyone.

We all owe a big 'thank you' to the excellent moderators here at DC.
Their light touch and fair-minded approach is invaluable.
The same goes for all the regular and helpful contributors.
At rock bottom, however, it is mouser himself who deserves credit
for the astonishing success of the fund raiser. It says a huge
amount both for the faith that everyone places in his probity and for the
respect that we all have for his concept of what DonationCoder should be.
