Title: Manage the display in the laptop
Post by: Contro on October 17, 2020, 09:47 AM
I am a little in despair with the screen options, the energy options.

So these are my need :
1. In my laptop turn off the display while the download continue. So don't enter in suspension, only turn off the display after a time.
2. Except of course if I am not plug connected to electricity.

At the present moment :
1. I have bad configured something. So the screen never turn off. I usually put in mininum of brillance with the keyboard option . F2 key .
2. I am using an app Radial menu v4 for turning off the display before I leave, but sometimes when I come back the display is on.

I will edit the post in a while after locate the display configuration, and energy configuration options.

Best Regards

Likely a piece of software is preventing the screen from your laptop to turn off.

Which software? You could find out by using very short times to turn your screen off and use a process of elimination to find the software causing your problem. Software to watch videos (like Windows media player, PotPlayer, VideoLan etc.) prevent Windows from turning off the screen.

Do you, for example, have software running in the background that moves the mouse. Even though you might not see a mouse cursor on your screen, that does not mean your mouse is not moving by software running in the background. Moving the mouse 1 pixel (at regular short intervals) is already enough to not turn off your screen.

There are more ways to prevent a screen from turning off. If finding the problematic software is too much of a hassle for you, you could consider using a tool to turn off your screen manually. Such software can help you out with the process of elimination, so it is likely a good idea to go out and find/download/install such software. There are quite some freeware tools that can turn off your screen by the touch of a button you configure.

There is also a possibility that there is a hardware device in your laptop that has conflicting power saving settings configured. For that you must open the Windows Device Manager, right-click on devices you see to open its properties. A new screen opens where some (but not all) devices have a tab 'Power Management' (or whatever it is called in Windows using the Spanish language). You could disable this functionality for each available device and see if that fixes your problem. Or at least disable the function 'allow this device to wake up Windows' or whatever it is called in a Spanish Windows.

Personally, I don't know of any software that can pinpoint exactly which (background) process is preventing Windows to turn off the screen, so the process of elimination is the only way out of this dilemma. In my mind at least.

Also, something that can also not be ruled out, is there someone with (remote) access to your laptop? If that is true, there is the possibility that this or these persons have accessed your laptop in your absence. I assume you are the only one with access to your laptop and that you don't allow (remote) access to your laptop by anyone. Assuming too much leads to all kinds of problems, so I tend to not do that too much and ask for as much info beforehand.

Something not possible with all of your previous questions on this forum.

Google is my friend:
Open a CMD interface (as administrator), then type:
powercfg -energy -trace
After waiting a minute you should now see an overview of processes that make use of the Windows energy saving functionality. That should give you insight into the problematic software.

You can also open the Windows Event Viewer and filter out all logging except for 'Event Source: Kernel-Power' and 'event ID: 62'. Another way to find out what might cause your problem.

If you feel this type of Windows interface is not your thing, let someone who knows take a look at the events that took place on your laptop.

Running to try.
Best Regards

I opened the cmd.exe as admin and introducing powercfg -energy -trace
gives me the message : No se pudo cargar la biblioteca de Diagnóstico de eficiencia energética (energy.dll).

The above one was in 64 bits
I am trying with the cmd.exe in 32 bits :
Now I obtain :
Habilitando el seguimiento durante 60 segundos...
Observando el comportamiento del sistema...

 :-* :P

finally : Seguimiento completo .... and come back to the indicative point.
That's all I can see....

Close all active programs, also the ones in the system tray, one by one, and wait after you close one if the screen goes off. That should find you if one of your programs is causing this phenomenon.

In safe mode in the configuration window appear the time of the display to be turn off : 1 minute.
So my question is in safe mode this configuration is active or not.

Must the display to be turned off in safe mode ?

If not, applying your answer that most applications are not running, mus I continue closing apps and services ?

What happening if not ?

If needed, I could program a Screen-Off-Overrider.
In past I already successful did the counterpart for my own Movie-Player, Screen/Drives/Everything (3 different options from windows) stay endless On however energy is configured.
It would react on mouse/keyboard input and how long to wait after last mouse/key-event...

Problem would be, if another program do the same backwards....

I think everyone can try this and comment :

With the laptop connected try to set the suspend mode : NEVER
and Display OFF : 1 minute
Observe the result.

Now set the suspend mode : 5 hours
and Display OFF : 1 minute.

In my case when the suspend mode is never I can't get the display off never, except using external apps like Display turn off from sourceforge or similars. But sometimes fails and when return the monitor is on again. This happen to me with radial menu.
Another option is use a black screenshot....

With uTorrent I had configured to prevent suspension during the downloads.
Can I have this with Firefox ?

I do what Ath recommend me but now I have to reinitiate, so I will see the final results.

My problem is pretty painful.
Sometimes when closing apps like ATnotes the display off after a minute. But recover again and again and then don't goes off.
In safe mode the display don't goes off.
In normal mode is erratic then.

I need an utility to have a garanty of display off all the time.

Note : I have tried in other forums too.

In microsoft tell me to the BIOS
In HP no answer.
In some other forums enigmatic answers or erratic measures to be taken.

The closing of the apps don't give me result in normal mode. The only thing I haven't tried is closing services...

It would seem to indicate that Windows itself is the problem, no software has made any requests to keep the system awake or the display on, (if the output is to be believed).

Try again but wait for a longer period, say an hour or two.

There's always the option to try an In-place Upgrade (https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-windows_install/how-to-perform-an-in-place-upgrade-with-windows-10/7f0b236e-3c6c-4913-9691-c4baa2a6190a) as a last resort.

I have no idea.
Applying the method of closing applications initially point to atnotes.exe

but after continues with the problem.

I also don't understand why we can't do the proofs in safe mode.
Even in safe mode the display off fails...

COM Surrogate
Broken runtime or something like that

The display don't go off after the minute...

Which still points to a problem within Windows itself so your only probable solutions, (that won't require installing Windows from scratch or otherwise trying to locate the fault), is Kodezwerg's software, (or similar), or an In-place Upgrade.

Application Frame Host, WMI Provider host, COM surrogate....all functionality that Windows relies upon to run in the background to give you the Windows experience you expect. And all have little to nothing to do with your screen not turning off.

WMI stands for Windows Management Instrumentation. A big name for functionality that keeps track of how and when the available resources from your computer are being used. Pretty handy also when you need to keep track of resource usage from many computers in 1 central location. Application Frame host is used for standardizing how and when available resources are spent on applications running on your computer. COM is used to enable information exchange between applications and services that may or may not have information exchange functionality built into them. All without user interaction. MS Office automation used COM a lot. Now less and less, because of REST/JSON.

Yes, perhaps you could make the point that indirectly these functionalities can have an impact on your screen not turning off, but it is highly unlikely that any of these functionalities are the cause of your problem.

4wd is right (as per usual), sounds more and more like there is a problem within your Windows installation.

At the present moment I am applying :

Turn to the minimum brilliance with the key in the laptop associated to F2
apply an addon : "C:\Program Files (x86)\Turn Off Monitor\Add Ons\BlankScreen.exe"
This put in black the screen except the cursor. Seems stable. The problem with other display off utilities is that they are reactivated...
