Title: Your fav' audio CD burner?
Post by: Curt on May 06, 2008, 03:00 PM
I never took interest in how to burn audio CDs, because I didn't have the need. But last week a girl friend asked me to make the audio from some YouTube video files playable on her tiny ghetto blaster, so I was forced to give it a try. I had a copy of Nero Essential 7 which was impressive to me in many ways, so I carefully followed the procedure and burned a CD. Of course the disc was playable, and she was happy with it - but I was not! I am "absolutely certain" that I did as I was supposed to do - maybe - and before starting the burn I double checked if the filenames were listed right, and all such things. But nevertheless, the CD's info was not readable to any other player! I mean, the music was okay, but the file names and all other info had gone - all the disc had to say on the other players was "Track 1" + "Unknown this, and unknown that", "Track 2" + "Unknown.." and so on. None of the important informations were saved - no artist, no track name, no nothing.

As I said, Nero was impressive to me in many ways, but I got so upset that I removed all of it without hesitating - thus saving 385 MB! Their photo manager was 135 MB, or something, so I removed that one too, just for the fun of it... So today I saved half a GIGA in just two clicks!

Now I will try out my StarBurn 10 (35 MB) from GAOTD, it seems to offer most, but not all, of what Nero could do, but I keep thinking to myself: "I wonder what the other DC'ers are using?"  :-\

So my question to 'you' is:
What do you use to burn audio CDs that will show all proper info? [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I'd second that, although iv'e only used the free version (media jukebox - google it), for general cd burning (and audio) i would reccomend infra recorder - sorry, i would link, but im using ie8 and its taking like a minute just to display a line of text, and using 50 cpu at the same time.

I have heard many good things about JR Media Center, but I really didn't care that much - I thought I already had what I would ever need. But I will try it, I guess - it is forty dollars... Will JR also convert various file types, and maybe extract MP3 from .FLV and .AVI files?

I have never before heard about Infra Recorder http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/
- I will have to check this one out as well!

I think you can burn from the free version. --goes check-- yup, it has a burn option.
I cant say I have used it, when I wanted to do an audioCD I used ashampoo's tool.

:-[  - I have the entire Ashampoo catalogue, but I used Nero because I wanted to get the best result... Guess I should have taken more time to at least TRY to remember what other choices I already had at hand! But I am glad to hear Ashampoo will do it's job.

I know this isn't audio related but I have started using Nero 7 again having had a lot of problems with coasters from Dual Layer DVDs. Nero seems to burn them consistently whereas I have had a few issues with ImgBurn and AShampoo Burning Suite.

Having said that I was very selective on how I reinstalled Nero - just the BurningROM and a few associated tools - none of the video stuff.

Yes, Nero 7 was excellent in many ways. And what's more: I have discovered what button I should have clicked, but didn't - so it might even have been able to do the job right, if only I had understood what button to click... Well: too late! And Nero 8 is just too expensive for me. But now I come to wonder how I managed to get my hands on Nero 7 Essentials in the first place? Has it been on GAOTD or something??  Hmm, come to think twice about it, I guess it came with one of my USB hard drives. Maybe I should check this and reinstall Essentials, to check if the error once again not was the program, but me...

Hi Folks,

I don't burn CD's much, but I needed one for a backup of a minicomputer access utility.
So I looked for freeware and ended up with :

Thanks, Curt.  That is simply one type of posting.  I figger if I managed to wade through a few sites and claims I can put a good set of links together (and folks here know what is really important, like forums and comparisons and what is really freeware vs. what is pseudo-freeware).

Yet a lot of times I learn much more from one good review, or the folks here who get the pics on board (is that generic or do we have special skills ?) and the discussions.

That is why I like DonationCoder, the folks here are solid techies, thinking out of the envelope, and they share what they know.  When I have sloshed through a bunch of software I will try to get the basics online, it makes it easier for me as well, rather than when they are cramped up in my Powermarks bookmarks.  By putting them online here I felt more responsible, so I check the sites, find the forums, and clean up some loose ends.  However it was not much extra effort.

Shalom,
Steven

Hi Curt, I would also suggest InfraRecorder http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/ . It's the only burning tool that I've used on windows for some time now. It's small, quick, clean and up to date. There is also a portable version:
http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/infrarecorder_portable

If you really want to go back to Nero you can download Nero Lite http://updatepack.nl/ and use your licence key on that. It is significantly smaller. It seems to exist in a legal grey zone but has been around for quite some time so I guess Nero doesn't mind that much.

Because I'm in the mood, I'll round things out a bit for the Linux crowd who might be interested...  ;D

I can definitely recommend Linux users look no further than K3b (http://k3b.plainblack.com/) for CD burning.
http://k3b.plainblack.com/
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
It will rip and burn ISO's, make Audio CD's from your MP3 collection, add files to multisession disks, Rip Audio from CD's, all kinds of stuff.
Yeah, the Gnome folks complain it uses Qt and blah blah blah, but no other tool comes close, and I've tried many.

-CdrBQ (http://cdrtoaster.sourceforge.net/) was very powerful, but had a funky interface (http://www.flickr.com/photos/12206416@N07/2034973354/) with too many options that, if you didn't know what the functions did, made coasters.
-XfBurn (http://www.xfce.org/projects/xfburn/) was nice, integrated with Xfce, but vastly underpowered.
-Serpentine (http://nixbit.com/cat/multimedia/audio/serpentine/) looked nice, but was only for burning Audio CD's (which it did well...)
-Brasero (http://www.gnome.org/projects/brasero/) was very nice, but it made two coasters when I was trying to burn onto multi-session disks.

That's all I have, and for the record, on Windows I always used Nero Express. Did what I wanted without getting in the way.

Coaster=CD that did not burn properly and is therefore unreadable.
Coaster because it is shaped like a drink coaster and that's all its good for.

I raised an eyebrow when I saw the title to this post...

I didn't know there were applications just for audio cd burning.
Usually I think of cd recording software as an all-in-one type of thing.

On windows I stick with older (pre-bloatware) versions of Nero.
On Gnu/Linux k3b is pretty good when you want a GUI.

I'm not sure why anyone would want an application that only burns audio cd's and nothing else..
Anyone care to bring me up-to-date on that one?
Title: Re: Your fav' audio CD burner?
Post by: Curt on May 08, 2008, 02:21 AM
The headline was meant to stress that the burner should handle music files' meta data properly, because my first attempt was missing all the info. If it can burn what else you have got would only be another plus. With this said, I don't agree with you. They don't all handle every job equally good - some are experts on 'this' but not so fantastic on 'that'.
Title: Re: Your fav' audio CD burner?
Post by: J-Mac on May 08, 2008, 03:06 AM
I used Nero Ultra 6 and 7, along with Roxio Easy Media Creator - both large, bloated try-to-do-it-all packages, and I hope I never make that mistake again!!  Another issue with both of them is that if you install almost ANY other kind of A/V application on your PC there will definitely be conflicts caused by the vastness of Nero and/or Roxio.

Now I stick with smaller very specific tools.

For CD's I use one that was mentioned above by Stephen: cdburnerxp.  The interface looks almost exactly like Nero Burning ROM used to before it got so darned big, and it does it all pretty much.  Nicely.  And it is very small and unobtrusive.

For video, DVD copies, etc. I use different tools altogether.  (cloneDVD2, AnyDVD, and most of the Applian programs).

I can pretty much rip, burn, copy, play, edit, etc. any audio or video I want.   :)

I never implied they all handle every job equally good. I was merely trying to understand. I don't really burn enough cd's to be too so critical/picky about my cd burning software. The metadata was a good example.

Hello Curt, I am not so sure what you mean by nerdish but for me the interface is clean and usable.
As a program it is extremely easy to use, there are 3 tabs:

Audio CD Ripper -  Audio Converter - CD/DVD creator.

I use only the last two. The audio converter supports all the audio formats that I know and has options for normalization, volume adjust, metadata and additional metadata. The CD/DVD Creator tab has 4 tabs:

Audio CD - MP3 CD/DVD - Data CD/DVD - DVD Video.

From these tabs I use only the 1st, as for the 3 others I prefer imgburn.
The Audio CD tab supports drag n drop of all formats and on the fly conversion of any format to wav before burning and some minor features like CD-Text, Gap Length etc.

In general for burning and converting audio files from one format to another it is excellent; as for Ampa's reply, imgburn does not convert audio files (so you have to have a different converter) and cannot change CD text, metadata, set gaps and some others.

Finally as a Audio CD Ripper, I think EAC does better job (more complicated though)

Post by: Lashiec on May 08, 2008, 10:22 AM
I'm with Ampa, ImgBurn could be your best option here, now that it burns Audio CDs and supports exotic formats and everything, though it seems to only be able to burn those from CUE files, not a big deal (http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=5555). You also need DirectShow filters to decode the format in which the files you wish to burn are encoded, if you have installed one of those codec packs, there should not be any problem.

Burrrn (http://www.burrrn.net/?page_id=4) is another option, and comes with lanux's endorsement (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=13271.0) :)

Personally, I always used Nero to burn Audio CDs, but it's been a couple of years since I burned my last one, and my Hi-Fi system doesn't read CD-Text, which seems to be related to your problem. Perhaps the files you burned lacked tagging, or you forgot to check up this screen:

Gothic,

Originally Nero Burning ROM and Roxio Easy CD Creator were exclusively for CD burning.  While they could burn data CD's, they were designed around burning ripped audio CD's and downloaded music.

Of course that was before DVD's were around -- or at least popular.

short answer is that there are as many choices as there are posters - they should all do audio CD's anyway's, ie given the plethora of highly capable freeware apps that do this there doesn't appear to be any compelling reason to purchase an app to do this...

can you clarify you're metadata requirements please?  i was of the understanding that audio CD's don't carry any metadata (ala MP3, OGG, WMA, etc).  They can include CD TEXT, which is what you see on the display of your CD player.

Likewise, file naming convention on all audio CD's that I've seen are in the format TRACK1.CDA, TRACK2.CDA, etc (this is done by the software when you write the CD)

Can it be that some (cheap) Compact Discs don't support CD-TEXT ??

as well as a nice list of capable burning software.

Sounds like what you need to do is enter the CD-Text info yourself before making the disk.

while not all discs are not created equal, they should all 'take' CD Text

Note also that not all players are CD Text capable

Anyone posting on these forums is in my book an expert user and knowledgeable enough to figure out most any program. So its ok to recommend a bunch of small efficient programs. But what the normal user?

What do I get for my girlfriend or parents? They want to do all the usual stuff - burn discs, rip movies and music, make photo dvd's and albums etc. Roxio/Nero suites are designed for people like them. But should I tell them to install these bloated monstrosities on their pc (which is not as fast or recent as mine anyway)?

I was trying out this EAC (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/en/index.php/resources/download/), but it never detected my CD disc. The drive but not the disc. Seems many would-be-users are having trouble with ASPI and IMAPI ?? I tried various fixes from the forum, but to no avail. I might though have a look at it again, if ever it passes the beta level.

Personally, I would not use Exact Audio Copy for audio burning, it's been said that its burner it's probably the most accurate when it comes to replicate an audio CD from ripped tracks (save Feurio), but we are talking about burning loose songs from YouTube videos :D. That's its main selling point as an audio burner, but unfortunately compatibility offsets this advantage.

What Exact Audio Copy does best (save dbPowerAmp, and maybe PerfectRip) it's ripping audio CDs, for the rest, try the other suggestions.

I have one burner I have been using (as proud registered user of course) and which one I can recommend without
any doubt. It's MagicISO (http://www.magiciso.com) and it's very powerful modern burner. Because nowadays I'll keep burning less and less, I'm using MagicISO to browse those images... for that, it's _brilliant_.

I had trouble with a few CD burning softwares that tried burning music but always ended up having a few songs skipping when the CD wasn't scratched, or song songs didn't even play. Since I switched to 'Roxio', I'm a happy man, and I get to listen to all the music on a CD every time with no type of skipping that makes you want to throw your player out a window.

Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 was the last version I purchased. Maybe it's just me, but I felt that it had caught the "Nero Bloat and Invasive Components" disease. I didn't like the "Drag to Disk" feature, but even though I disabled it a number of times it always found a way to suddenly appear on my desktop again unexpectedly.

Roxio had just added too many modules, a la Nero Ultra, IMO. Rather than stick with their main expertise, their base programs, they decided that all of their users needed to have an all-encompassing suite, including photo organization and editing. I don’t want Roxio or Nero to do that - I already have much better tools. But like Nero, Roxio tries to grab the file association for every type of media file on your box.

I had Roxio EMC8 and Nero Ultra 7 and ended up removing both and going back to basics, with several smaller, specialized applications.

Thanks!

To be fair Roxio did it before Nero - that is why I swapped to Nero 5 originally.

That's probably true, Carol. But I already had Nero Ultra 6 when I purchased Roxio EMC8, so I saw the bloat appear first in Nero. I had been using Sonic's applications - MyDVD Deluxe Suite and DVDIt - but after Roxio purchased Sonic (or actually was purchased BY Sonic, I think) I had to go with Roxio in order to upgrade my Sonic utilities. Thus I saw the bloat in Nero first, then got to experience it in Roxio EMC later, after I purchased V.8.

Thanks!

I'm a huge fan of ImgBurn and was happy to see it can do audio CDs too... unfortunately, I really don't see myself burning music to CDs anymore, much less as an audio CD (opposed to an MP3 CD).

BTW, ImgBurn is portable (woop!).

Also, J River Media Center (god I hate that name) and it's free counterpart, Media Jukebox, (much better name) has really grown on me lately, and since it burns CDs I have a feeling that if I were to ever burn a music CD (as audio or as files) I'd probably just use Media Center. Media Center (not Jukebox) has a "portable install" option, but it hasn't worked for me after multiple tries .

I think Media Jukebox is the perfect "give to mom" program for audio, in fact I just gave it to my mom over thanksgiving weekend...

If you try Burrrn I recommend Burrrn Portable (http://www.softpedia.com/get/PORTABLE-SOFTWARE/CD-DVD-Tools/Windows-Portable-Applications-Portable-Burrrn.shtml) esp. if on a post-XP OS.  The one with the installer works on Vista, but you get double entries in the log for some reason.  The portable doesn't seem to have that bug.

Automatically converts FLAC.  Just drop them on.

edit: btw have you confirmed with other discs that the boom box supports text info?  I have a stereo system still kicking that only does audio CDs.  It gives the track number and the play time.  That's it.  It came out before all this mp3 stuff was invented.
