Curious about how we award prizes?  See https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=1684.0 for a discussion about our custom prize optimizer utility. Winning something one month reduces your chances of winning the next month, and being helpful on the forum slightly increases your chances.

Congratulations to the winners!

Here's me being bored:

I went through the drawing result posts I could find in this forum section, and there was a grand total of 683 prizes won.

These prizes were won by 486 lucky people.

Of those, 138 have won twice or more, and 44 have won three times or more.

The three most winning users were:

superboyac (6: XFilesDialog, ACDSee Pro, MyBase, HDDLife, Zoom Player Pro, EverNote Plus)
dcm (5: Process Lasso, PageSpy Pro, MetaProducts Links Organizer, MusicIP Mixer Premium, FontExpert 2007)
Darwin (5: File-Ex, Almeza Apps, Collectorz organizer, Notezilla, Camtasia Studio)

Disclaimer: Winning of course relates to how many programs you enter the contest for, and how many others enter for the same programs .. that being said, I'd still love for superboyac to buy me a lottery ticket .

Here's the link again describing how winners are chosen by the program: https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=1684.0

There are a few ways to "game" the prize system which i probably need to address in the prize optimizer..

Things i'm not thrilled about and may try to change:

I'm happy to have more suggestions on how the prize optimizer could be tweaked -- so send me your suggestions!

Due to Jibz' excellent detective work, users Darwin, superboyac, and dcm have been placed on the permanent BAN list and shall never win another prize  ;D  Please direct all hate mail to jibz and send him a nice big poisonous attack creature.  (just joking!)

I think people with less than 25 posts shouldn't be able to enter. So they don't imbalance all the others who actually contribute and etc.

Lolol. I actually asked today in IRC if any body had won more than 2 or 3 prizes.. :) And now Jibz has done some good snooping and presented the facts :)

Title: Re: January 2008 Software Drawing Winners
Post by: mouser on January 27, 2008, 08:01 AM
the problem with basing things on posts is that people might start posting just to reach that threshold (and i note as this thread (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=2625.msg97101) demonstrates that some people are already post-count-crazy).

and if we only allowed people with more than x posts to enter it would lead to a lot of new members here feeling tricked.

but, we could do something where we add the tiniest of weight to users who are minimally "active" on the forum (say 5 posts in the last six months).

Disclaimer: Winning of course relates to how many programs you enter the contest for, and how many others enter for the same programs .. that being said, I'd still love for superboyac to buy me a lottery ticket .
-Jibz

I don't enter that often. As a matter of fact, I rarely enter...only when I see something I really really want, or really really need.

I have won 3 times in the last 2 years.

Font Expert 2006
Surfulator
and now Beyond Compare

I think I have better luck than most here with my ratio of wins:losses, so maybe I should buy you that lottery ticket.  ;)

I think people with less than 25 posts shouldn't be able to enter. So they don't imbalance all the others who actually contribute and etc.
-mitzevo

There are a lot of people that donated to the site that have never made a single post. They have contributed and deserve to win just as much as anyone else.

There are also the 'silent' members that are promoting us outside this site, on their blogs and other forums. They also deserve to win just as much as anyone else.

Not all ways to contribute are visible within the forum. Limiting it to people that have made a certain number of posts would be very unfair.
Title: Re: January 2008 Software Drawing Winners
Post by: mouser on January 27, 2008, 08:15 AM
another minor observation about fairness in choosing winners.

I've noticed that my obsession with "fairness" in awarding prizes for these drawings and for the few programming contests we had where we gave prizes is fraught with dangers.

The whole reason i wrote the prize optimizer was because i thought there should be a fairer way to choose winners based on what they want and to give everyone a chance to win.

But taking such an approach means i sometimes agonize over these things and struggle to figure out the "fairest" solution, when i often don't have enough information to make a "fair" decision.  For example when we had a big programming contest with very expensive prizes, i struggled hard with the idea that some people could not afford this if they don't win it, wheras for others price wasn't an issue, but maybe pride was, etc.

Also, if you try to make a decision about what would be the "fair" way to give out prizes, then some people might feel upset at why you didn't think they were more worthy, and maybe you just forgot about something, etc.

One huge advantage to just making everything just a purely random choice is that people can get mad at the universe when they don't win, instead of getting mad at you  :-\

So, i think i've given up trying to figure out a way to make these things go to the people that really deserve them, and let it mostly be luck, with just a small number of heuristics to try to make it a little more fair overall in the long run.

One thing people can do to help things work out right:
Don't enter to win programs you aren't going to use!

Especially for the big expensive programs, please don't try to win them just because they are expensive -- if you do win and you don't really use the program, you are taking away this prize from someone who might not have been able to afford it and who would have put it to good use.

My thanks to you folks at DC for GoodSync.  I really appreciate the opportunity to win a much needed program and I am very pleased with what I won.  Now that I'll be in the small chance to win pool for the next few months, I wish good luck to all the other entrants.  Thanks again.

I'm speechless :-*

I'd like to thank cthorpe, for his hard work, DC and the community, for setting up the drawing (and choosing an app different than mine, that boosted my odds of winning it ;D), aignes, for providing the licenses, the academy, my parents who are...

/me gets carried away from the stage by angry moderators

BTW, I see that xplorer² was included in the giveaway, but nobody won a license. What happened?

There are a lot of people that donated to the site that have never made a single post. They have contributed and deserve to win just as much as anyone else.
Well then you add in a check to see if user has donated..

edit: so that's in effect then.

the problem with basing things on posts is that people might start posting just to reach that threshold
Yeah, it's quite obvious when people are trying to get their post count up (*cough*)..

So I guess my idea is null and void now.. lol.. I forgot about the people who donated / contributed offsite / etc and didn't make any posts here at the forum.
But if they can't even make one post and want to enter the comps.. shame on them.

That's a lot of very happy people

I would suspect that the only reason some people won more than one is that there were not that many entrants for all the categories, and hey, in the end that is only fair.

I only picked I think 5 that I wanted to win, I could have picked more but I know I am a software addict so I watch myself... I made sure to only list things that I actually knew I would use (partly because I dont want to regret it when i see the giveaways for the next few months...) so I am super happy I won one of them   :-*

Just for the record, I was in no way complaining about the selection process -- I know mouser has put a lot of effort into making the program doing it as fair as humanly possible .

I just sat there looking at the winner list and pondered how many had actually won multiple times, which was of course more than enough of an excuse for me to write a perl script to sort through the data .

Jibz, i certainly didn't get that idea I just wanted to give some background for anyone new to the site.

In case people don't know, Jibz is member #3 on this forum.  Members 1+2 are the default admin account and me.
One of the nicest people i know and he and i have worked together on some fun projects (e.g. Octane (http://octane.sourceforge.net/)).

ps. any effort looking at stats of the site and stuff like this i support 100%, i think it just makes things more interesting and fun :)

It's always nice to win something - thank you!

Thanks, in fact, to everyone here at DonationCoder. As I see it, everyone here contributes to the success of the site and so -- directly or indirectly -- helps to make every aspect work well, including the giveaways and discounts.

Extra thanks to mouser and CThorpe and to others who worked directly on arranging (and donating) the current, very impressive list of items to win!

mouser: The fact that the optimizer does not keep track of how many times you've won, only that you've won in the recent past.  If I modified that those who have won many times would not be winning so often, even if they have been entering a lot and for a long time.
and
Should we more actively try to bump the weights of people who are actively contributing on the site?

It seems that the more you try to weight things, the more subjective the system becomes. My vote would be for the closest approximation to a truly random system that can be accomplished. That way, everybody has exactly the same chance to win, every time. When one tries to impose 'fairness' on a system the higher becomes the chance of introducing inadvertent inequities.

mouser: It might be nicer to put in some term which looks at how many times a person has entered and lost and boost their chances of winning if so.
Should the optimizer keep track somehow of whether you won the most prized prize or the least?

Again, my 2¢ goes onto the pile for random selection, same argument.

There are so many variables and imponderables to try to control -- entered and lost often, entered and lost seldom, didn't enter at all because no desired software in some drawings, entered every drawing no matter what...and on, and on...

To be 'fair' requires some subjective assessment of, and assumptions about, behaviour and you don't have access to the required motivational data. Seems to me that every attempt to 'deskew' the system will only skew it in another direction.

And, mouser, it's no small tribute to you that whatever you decide after taking the collective pulse will likely be just fine with almost everybody here!

Congratulations to all the winners. I hope everyone enjoys their new software!

In the midst of all the excitement and enthusiasm, I would humbly request that people keep in mind THIS MONTH's giveaway is in preparation for the site's upcoming fundraiser. As the name suggests, DonationCoder requires us to give in order to keep doing what it has been.

Please consider contributing financially in addition to the other ways you contribute to the site.

Thanks, Ken

A...awesome!  My first time entering the giveaway (and my first post here :coughcough:), and I win!  Thank you so much!

I can understand your desire, Mouser, to try to give everyone a fair shot at the goods:  the folks who don't have cash but do participate, the folks who don't participate much but donate (like me  >_>), etc.  I have to say that as someone who essentially is brand new here, I appreciate you trying to take everything into consideration.  :)  And really, there's no better way to draw people into a community than to have them actually win something from a contest like this. Though I won't likely have a lot of time to post/watch, feeling like I'm not shut out from things like this just because I don't post all the time makes DC seem like a much more welcoming place.  Thanks again.

Wow. Lots of new voices. Welcome and congratulations to all of you. I hope you all come to like DC as much as I have.

I think this has summed up a great effect of these give-aways: the new voices (Congratulations and welcome!!  )

Concerning tweaking: I'd have make the winning history count forever but on a reducing scale: so that those that had never won would, in terms of the winning history, have a better chance than those that had won.

For pure randomness, I don't think if someone won last month that they should be excluded from wining next month, but it should be rare.

How about: if you had the chance of winning as inversely proportional to the weighted number of times you'd won (where the weighting decreased the further you went into the past)?

Thank you cthorpe, and all the companies that gave all the wonderful prizes.

I, also, joined the site mainly to support the ScreenShotCaptor program. As far as my "not posting" goes,... talk little, read, listen (and try to learn) much...

Thank you, again, to all of you!

Woohoo!  Free software!  That'll help offset all the money I've spent on new software over the last couple of months between the great DC discounts that have been rounded up and general holiday discounts.

Let's see if I can remember the new purchases:
TruePianos VSTi
EverNote
ClipMate

First time entry in the give-away contest and I won the only software I picked, MyLife Organized, for which I am very grateful.  Wish I had more time to spend here and really get familiar with all the great things to like about the site.  Maybe if I really put to use all the "user friendly" attributes of what I just won, I'll be back more often, but first on to organizing my life.

Thanks to all

I have to admit I'd completely forgotten about this contest since entering, and since I spend most of my time on this site browsing the General Software Discussion forums I failed to notice the prize drawing announcement.

It was only after my ISP sent me an email reminding users that their new spam tool was user-configurable that I checked my webmail and noticed a Donationcoder email marked as spam (for shame!). I wonder if the "You won" part of the subject line was what did it in....  ;D

Anyway, thanks heaps!

A a recent discoverer of DC, after being led here by a search link for software I already owned, and a first time contributor to DonationCoder in January, I am immensely pleased by winning a license for SyncBack SE and OnClick Utilities.  Thanks to everyone at DC for having the giveaway and to the folks at 2BrightSparks for providing the software licenses.

I had already sung your praises to a number of friends.  It is now time to sing those words of praise louder and further afield.

I will be back again soon to keep trying to find the perfect programs for my needs.

Thanks again to all and an early Happy Valentines Day to a some easy to love software authors, publishers, and publicists.   :-*

Wow.

First time I have entered an online draw, or any draw for that matter, and I won something.
100%+ happy.

Thanks DC and everyone else on the site for making it great.

Oh yes ... and my first post  :).

Brought here from LifeHacker after reading about 'silverlight' for Windose application FARR, which is my view is awsome ... (Replaced SlickRun and Launchy).

Thanks again all.
