Title: A piece of Sh**
Post by: a.steve.a on January 13, 2011, 06:06 PM
My name is Steve Anderson.

I give up!

Please remove my name and email address from your records. I believe you don't give 'free' keys. You just want to hassle us. NO PROGRAM is worth that!

I am sad to hear you don't like whatever program you downloaded. As the above individuals have said, linked and everything but shown, it is trivial to request a free key.

No need to reply. Please don't. I will remove your program from my computer.

I am likely saddened that you find it necessary to post an angry message, yet not wait for replies to help with your issue.

Now, the following is my very personal opinion that does not reflect anyone elses opinion at all, and I'll get rather annoyed if it is to be taken as anything close to such.

DonationCoder programs are indeed free, and that while people around here are very willing to help, we are not a 'company' nor required to put up with disrespectful demanding 'customers'. We are a forum with people who put in their free time trying to make the computer-life a funner and more relaxed thing for everyone. If your message was not intended 'angry', then I apologize for interpreting it as such, but if I were the sole one responsible for handling support requests, I might well ignore disrespectful, annoying, look-the-world-is-about-me requests flat out.

Thankfully I'm just a coder. :)

A person has to earn the right to sound that angry.  A first-time poster with that attitude is beyond help.

I just want to say that I've always admired mouser for the way in which he responds to these situations.   Most of us would instinctively snap back at what could be construed as rude/obnoxious behavior.

If you ever have to do support, you'll get this and much worse.

Very often it's simply someone becoming very frustrated and then lashing out. It happens. (I've done it myself, occasionally with the help of a little C2H5OH.)

There's an upside though -- A large number of people that do get like this will swing back the other way and become extremely happy and tell other people *IF* you treat them nicely, understand their frustrations, and help them solve the problem.

I've been there. I've even had a couple of tech support guys hang up on me. ;) But my frustration was totally justified!

True. Positivity can be contagious.

On a lighter note: Extremely patient tech support (NSFW):

Funny. It's now 4:55am...

I've been dealing with a very irate person's technical issue since about 9:45PM yesterday. She's a self-described 'expert user' who hard-crashed her Thinkpad after messing with things in the registry and system32 folder. Supposedly, this was done at the behest of the notebook manufacturer's phone support people. (Yeah...ok...maybeeeeee...)

Of course that doesn't explain why there's an almost complete copy of her My Documents folder inside her Favorites folder inside her My Documents folder! Plus one more complete copy of the previous mess in a folder named Favorites which is sitting on her desktop. Nor does it explain why the restoration recovery partition seems to be missing half its files. Or why...

The manufacturer recommended she backup her data and then do a full "factory restore" to fix the current problem. She does not want that. She has spent "hours and hours" customizing her desktop. She wants the laptop "fixed back to exactly the way it was before - except working." (Interesting way to phrase it, don't you think?)

She's a 'very good friend' of the very important client who gave her my name.  :-\

Long night...

Kinda goes with the turf.

Welcome to the world of tech support. ;D

Update: It is now 5:38am...

Wow, took you 43 minutes to write this crap...  :D just kidding.

If you need more of that 'business', I can refer some of my family members and their notebooks.

Oh! That's because I wrote it, then got occupied for a bit with the (fixed now) laptop, and forgot to send it.  ;D

Note: about a third of the total time (~5 hrs) was spent making backups, pulling a disk image, reboots, browsing the DoCo forums, getting coffee, and other non-interactive stuff. And the desktop that "hours and hours" were supposedly spent on? It's just a theme you can download from the Deviant Art website. What must have taken her "hours and hours" was finding it. There are something like fifty available 3rd-party themes sitting on this PC!

I have to give you praise for your patience, because if it were me I'd just reinstall from scratch and set it up the way I like, big ol' scary taskbar on the right and all, and stick one of my wallpapers on her desktop. (I've had no complaints doing this to people yet  ;))

No praise deserved - for patience or anything else.

It was one of THOSE projects. Y'know... somebody you like asks you to help a person you normally wouldn't want to be stuck in the same room with. "Run away! Run away!" I'm sure you've had your share of those.

Besides, I didn't think it would be wise to presume anything with this particular woman. Very prickly.

the site can sometimes be frustrating -- occasionally severely so.

Mouser, although certainly not the problem in this case, maybe for some users it would be helpful to have certain relevant parts of the site in their native language, e.g. parts like how to get a license key or the donations part and such. I'm sure you'd have no trouble finding enough volunteers to translate these parts for you should you want to do that.

How about widget for license key ? I mean box where there is text-field for email id and name which will generate license key for program once email is entered and confirmed ? By the way i failed to understand his complaint, he's angry because there is no-nagging lifetime key or he got no way to find license key ?

I like the idea of multi-language instructions for license keys. We could make this a community effort, where people translate the English instructions into their native language.

Yeah, I think mouser 'fixed' it at one point in December.. and then we suddenly had a 'random questionmarks bug' when editing posts. I know I had that problem when putting in my readme.txt posts, which really got butchered by that since I use spaces for indentation in those. :)

So he had to undo the change since apparently spaces are used a bit more often than foreign languages (with non-standard latin characters) around here.

This Swiss German text works: Der Schöppelimunggi u der Houderebäseler si einischt schpät am Abe, wo scho der Schibützu durs Gochlimoos pfoderet het, über s Batzmättere Heigisch im Erpfetli zueglüffe u hei nang na gschtigelet u gschigöggelet, das me z Gotts Bäri hätt chönne meine, si sige nanger scheich.

:D

(yeah, I know, it's not funny for most of the dc community. It's the beginning of a fun story written by a famous Swiss comedian that sounds very Swiss German, but most of the words don't actually mean anything)

I am somewhat familiar with Swiss German after living near Schopfheim for a couple of years, but indeed I understand only five words...

Sounds genuine Swiss German though.
