Title: Start Menu Misbehaving (Or: Another Stupid Question From Daniel)
Post by: siouxdax on April 09, 2009, 08:20 AM
Hello folks:
Yet another stupid question from Daniel in Tulsa here. LOL. Ever since I re-installed XP I've noticed some somewhat strange behavior when arranging items within my Start Menu. Firstly, I do have it set to be able to drag-n-drop items. So here it goes: I was arranging icons within a nested folder in my Start Menu. Every time I moved the icon to its rightful place in the list the entire Start Menu collapses, forcing me to open it back up, navigate to the folder in question and repeat. Formerly I could drag-n-drop to my heart's content. It would be nice if the Start Menu folder in the users' "Documents & Settings" would allow for this, but, alas, it doesn't. Also, I do use Tidy Start Menu (http://www.tidystartmenu.com/index.shtml), but it doesn't allow for organizing the shortcuts in a desired order.

So (once again), any thoughts/suggestions?

I swear, once I can cough up the dough I'm making a substantial donation to DC. You all have been so kind and helpful.

Did you check "Enable Dragging and Dropping" Option in your start menu properties?

Scratch that.

Start, Run, type regsvr32 /i shell32.dll, and press OK and the same for this command regsvr32 ole32.dll (you may have to restart to see if that fix the problem.)

PhilB66:
What exactly am I doing by running those lines? Should I backup first?

Executing the commands will re-register shell32.dll and ole32.dll. You may backup but it's not really necessary as these dlls were installed with Windows.

Okay, I ran both of those, but still have the same issue. I do have one question though that may or may not have anything to do with this. This morning I received an email that looked suspicious. I opened the email, but didn't click on any of the links contained therein. Would that have done anything?

Okay, I've noticed something else. Whenever I mouse over a window it automatically focuses on that window. When I move it away, the focus leaves. I haven't made any mouse changes except for its speed. What now?

A restart might help.

Do you have TweakUI installed?

Yes, I do have TweakUI installed. But since your last post I reverted back to a restore point from last night. No problems now. Would TweakUI have caused this? Also, I feel I should mention that I was trying to consolidate my start menu shortcuts in the accessories folder. I use xplorer2 instead of Windows Explorer, so I had two panes open; one with start menu from 'all users' and the other with start menu from 'Daniel'. I did move shortcuts between the two. I don't know if that would have messed things up or not.

Nope. I did not enable X-Mouse. Normally when something like this happens and roll back to a system restore point I just shrug my shoulders and move on. But with this issue I really want to know what caused this so I can avoid it in the future.
