This Sheena, our other kid. Spoiled rotten. We were out driving by the lake one day about 5 years back, and I saw a guy kick her. Not kick at her, but kick her. I put the minivan in reverse, got out the crowbar, and offered the guy $25 (all I had in my wallet) or the crowbar. He took the $25. She had been never in a house, always chained to a doghouse, open sores on her, fleas, thin and beaten. Took us over an hour to get her in the van, then 2 days and a lot of cheese to get her to leave the kitchen. Most intelligent canine I have ever met. We love her, plain and simple.

Black and white kitty is David Hasselhoff, next is the mischievous Mr. Sebastien Ferret, Frik and Frak, our Cockatiels, and last but not least is Chuck Norris (A.K.A Ghost) Can you tell my 15 year old daughter named the cats?

Alas, this is just a reminder, both the dogs passed away not too long ago. The tomcat Gandalf is not alone, though, my 16 months old son takes care of his "training".

Would you believe Tinkerbell?
Is your dog of the type/model 'Mechelaer'?-Shades
I know that breed as Malinois. Close, but not quite. She's a black German shepherd (or Alsatian where I come from). A back Malinois would look very similar but have a marginally slighter build. We considered one before deciding on Tinkerbell.
Beautiful!-y0himba

not sure what to say here. below is a picture of Pepper as a puppy. had to take her to be put to sleep a few months ago aged about 12 years. i won't go into the details other than to say i felt like i'd done the worst thing imaginable; i'd destroyed something of total vitality and joy - i didn't understand what grief meant until that day (i'm incredibly upset now just thinking about it). there are genuinely good and pure things in this universe and Pepper was one of them. she had the playful spirit and energy of a young dog right up to her last day. sorry, i'll stop going on about it now.

below is Millie (left) and Sophie (right). they are about 14 years old. they like eating, sleeping, and walking. Millie still gets excited and barks a lot when it's time to go for a walk. Sophie likes to make pathetic whining noises whenever she wants something, i.e. more food.

thanks nudone, I think that about most animals - that they are 'are genuinely good and pure', if not it's usually unfortunately because people have corrupted them . .
They're all lovely looking dogs btw
this thread has been very moving at times - thanks all :-*

true, tomos. you tend to find a better class of person in an animal. and i agree about this thread too.

here's two that got new homes when I moved abroad - cute huh?

sam n fifi . . funny though, they never did get on when they grew up fully. She hit puberty very young and started flirting like mad with all the big toms around the place. He was older but still a teenager and felt (& was) left out - maybe he was already neutered even :-\ (sounds like a dramatic romantic novel lol)
She got neutered after the first litter - each kitten looked like a different one of the toms :tellme: :)

EDIT 4 (FINAL): 2 pictures moved to Imageshack due to forum file size constraints - my apologies to those whom have trouble with/don't like IS
Whoa, freaky... we too have an all-black female German Shepherd, with the same amber/golden eyes :o
Some background about her:
Her name is "Ebony" and she is 6 this year I believe (human years, that is). We have had her for about 4 and a half years now, and she now resides with another new puppy (more on him later). Good dog, smart - she used to not listen unless you indicated that you were in charge, but now I can simply go outside and say something like, "Ebony, go in your run" (as if I am talking to another human - she understands what I tell her quite well... its kind of scary) and she will happily trot into her little gated area (well, its actually quite big, but that's not the point). She was abused as a puppy by her previous owner, beaten and malnourished... we got her from the kennel the day she was to be put down; a friend of my dad's told us about her.
The first year or so especially, when we would go outside to work or clean the yard, she would cower and run away if we we're holding shovels or using a lawnmower, things like that. Now I can walk up to around a foot from her and scoop up what she "leaves behind" and she will casually lay there, looking around or watching me curiously. She knows she is cared for and that this is her home - on several occasions we have left the backyard gate open for several hours, only to come back out to close it and find her watching it to make sure no one comes in that she isn't familiar with. Only once (about 2 months ago) did she wander out, and that was only to the neighbors driveway (she came back on her own will easily and happily, tail wagging, once we came out and saw her).

----------
Doggie #2 (sister's):
My sister recently got out of pull-ups and learned to use the bathroom because of this cute puppy (for the curious, my sister turned 10 in March). I'm not sure what he is, kind of a mix of 3 or so breeds seems to be the consensus. She has named him "Jack" (made it up herself, he seems happy with it as well) and has been living here for the last 2 and a half weeks, along with Ebony (above). The two get along quite well together and it turned out nicely for everyone. My sister goes out at least once if not 2, 3, 4, or 10 times a day (and this is the Arizona desert!) to go play with him and Ebony, and its really changed how she acts. He is a quiet puppy (surprisingly enough) and will keep near Ebony for protection and care, and they wrestle often (usually followed by my sister panicking, thinking they are fighting).
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
----------
Hamsters (sister's):
We also have two female hamsters, Rose and Patunia. Patunia has taken up some kind of anger-problem and bites anyone that tries to pick her up anymore. It got so bad with the two fighting that they now have separate cages. They are dwarf hamsters, so they don't grow much bigger than the palm of your hand (about half that width wide, same height/length). Cute and fun though, and interesting to watch and pet (well, Rose anyways). Most people wonder how we keep the two names correct - my sister came up with the rather simple/clever idea of using some Scotch tape and writing the name on that tape, and applying it to the cage.

----------
Fish (sister's):
Not much to say here... we originally had 2 fish (this was years back) + a crab ("Crabby" or "Crabbie", not sure). We have gone through several both secret and admitted waves of wish (we had a month-long span of weekly-dying fish, still no idea what caused it :tellme:). There are supposed to be names for the now 5 (? not completely sure) fish we have, along with the two frogs... I don't see it :P

----------
Rabbits (neighbors moved out and abandoned them (!)):
Well, not much of a story here - next door neighbors who have lived there for the last 4 years or so just up-and-left one day, leaving their two rabbits out front. We found them out in their front yard, scared, with no food and water. My mom and sister went out and gave them a bowl of baby carrots and another full of cold water, and that night we went out and "rescued" them from the trash-filled yard (they not only left a massive pile of garbage, but the yard itself was beyond disgusting, littered with everything from pop cans to razor blades to lightbulbs and general filth ).
(Don't ask me why the one bunny is sitting on their carrots... I wouldn't go eating them :P also the dog carrier we used to hold them for prep and transit to the Humane Society looks dirty, but keep in mind it is about 25 years old, so those are simply stains and not actual dirt or anything (we cleaned it prior to bringing Jack home with it, about two weeks before))

I'm kinda glad I am going to be moving out of here in a couple years - my sister wants to become a veterinarian, and it looks like she wants her own zoo as well :tellme:

Several years back I had my own dog, "Duke". He wasn't too smart, but he was playful and hyper, and always wanting to do whatever I did. For some reason he had this love of eating rocks - no matter what the size or quantity. The people whom built the house were kind enough to use the lowest grade dirt available, so rocks were literally everywhere in the yard (you can still find them by digging slightly, but all surface rocks are finally gone, almost 11 years later). One day back in the 3rd grade (I believe, may have been 4th) I was sitting eating lunch at the table, around 12:20, and got this strange feeling of worry and sadness over me. When I got home that day, Duke was not there. My mom and dad had rushed him to the animal hospital due to something with his intestines (I don't remember what specifically), but to save him would cost a several-thousand dollar operation along with expensive medication, and even that wasn't going to guarantee he would live very long, so they had put him to sleep at about 12:20. I still have his small green, clip-together collar.
I loved Duke so much... :'(
EDIT: Here is his collar, the tags still attached (DC forum file size limit reached, so ImageShack... sorry guys)

@Target:
An Alaska Malamut? (at least that is the only name from type of dog that is known to me)
My brother had one years ago, only that one had two blue eyes (quite rare in the breed, I was told). That was the most friendly dog I ever met and when people lay first eyes on the dog they always were not so pleasantly surprised to downright afraid of those eyes.

close, but not quite - he's a Siberian Husky
not sure about Malamutes, but in Sibe's blue eyes are relatively common - they can have blue or brown eyes, or a mix, in our case what's called a party colour where the eye is part blue and part brown
and with regard to his nature, his name says it all

VERY intelligent, well mannered(Except he keeps trying to breed my poor Sheena), house trained, and doesn't run away. About 8 months old.
The kids who owned this little guy decided it would be okay just to leave him behind when they moved. My neighbor owns rental properties around town and found him. The previous tenants had been gone a week.

This is Jet (aka The Jetster, Jetski, Jetski Bibbles, or even just Bibbles). 'Walk' must be spelled around Miss Bibbles (we're pretty sure she's catching on to that as well :tellme:), for fear of the destruction of the back door, and you daren't utter the words 'bye-bye car-car' unless you intend to take her out on the town (you can get away with B-B-C-C though).
She was rescued from the local shelter, and has the sweetest disposition you've ever seen in an animal. She enjoys pizza crusts, and liver treats (aka doggie-crack). Unfortunately, she belongs to the other half, but you can rest assured I'll be hanging around as long as she's here ;)

http://images27.fotki.com/v1019/photos/8/36878/7288453/5D_02_0566-vi.jpg
We only have ten rats right now (down from a high number of 26). My wife is the "freak" of the family, but I guess I'm not far behind ... she rescues unwanted rats, but almost never re-homes them, so our home is host to many cages.

Pippi was a friend's dog, in Denmark, and when this friend decided to go back to University she couldn't keep her dog (pets not allowed in student housing).
So we drove her to England fron Denmark, and she's delighted us ever since :-*
Now I have wanted a dog since I was about 4 - but lived in appartments and with busy jobs a lot so it would not have been fair to a dog. But in spring 2008 my mother was poorly, my last job was finished, and it was just time to get the dog. I waited over 30 years for that dog.
As things stand, she has 2 humans home with her nearly all the time, she gets to run and play a lot, she gets on long walks - and she gets spoiled (in a good way, time and interaction and training, not treats).
Pippi is a Portuguese Water Dog, but not breed standard as she has a flat coat. The result is an incredibly cute and elegant dog, by everyone's standards.
(i have a whole set on flickr... :-\ http://www.flickr.com/photos/superiphi/sets/72157607574182136/ )
-
She is beautiful, and it is quite apparent that you love her and spoil her LOL. She looks a bit mischievous? How old?
-
iphigenie, I like the story (edit: and photos) on Flikr, of how you acquired Pippi.
She sounds like a great dog. And shiny, wow! Very pretty. :)
-
Yohimba, pippi is just over 4 years old (http://www.casahoyas.com/english/puppies/litter4/) . Nobody has told her you're supposed to be adult at 4 though :-* and I hope she stays this bouncy and happy and puppyish forever, even if it means she has a very short attention span for training (a shame, since she is very smart who knows what she could learn to do)
Sarah, she is a very soft (PWD are especially soft dogs) and shiny dog, which is a good thing cause she really likes to be petted a lot.
my partner Robb wanted to teach her frisbee, but she hasn't figured out the drill of it yet. She likes being chased or chasing (people or dogs) more than just about anything in the world, but chasing a frisbee loses interest as soon as the thing is landed or caught. Bring it *back*? We've hope yet...
-

So does my cat! I chase her 'till she's cornered, then run away - then she charges after me until I'm caught, then we start over.
I live in an apartment, so each chase takes about 2 seconds ;D - not exactly a run on the beach, but we manage :)
I would so love to have a mini French or English Bulldog, and the second I live in a (truly) pet-friendly environment, I'll have one.
For now, I have my most loved, most appreciated, but :( aging feline companion.
It's so fun to get to hear and express all of this love we have for our pets. Thanks, mouser, for starting this thread :-*

We chase her around the kitchen table, on and on - I do wonder what the neighbours might think if they see me run in circles making faces... they dont see the dog!

I waited over 30 years, so in time you will :)
-
We had a dog like that, "Petey". Jack Russel/Beagle mix. His favorite thing was to have children chase him around the drive in theater. He would babysit our daughter. When she took off running out to the "back 40", Petey would grab her diaper and make her sit down until we caught up.
He was brilliant our Petey, and we loved him to old age. We cried for over a week, and I am a bit teary just now thinking of him. His ashes sit on the top shelf of my desk here.
-
i love when dogs do that thing when they want to be chased where they lower down on their front legs and stare at you intently and happily and do that little bouncy thing where they are daring you to chase them.
-
Bring it *back*? We've hope yet...

Mine used to take the view that if I throw something away then, clearly, it's no longer wanted.
Hard to beat that logic :)

Oh...my heart goes out to you. :(
I also had videos of one of my cat's last days & although they didn't reflect her suffering, they were so painful to watch that I finally deleted them. No regrets, I was just torturing myself by watching them. Although I couldn't bear to watch even your videos, obviously what you've created is a beautiful & meaningful tribute.
In due time, as your grief slowly subsides, may I humbly suggest you have a loved one password protect your page / site - and keep yourself out - just until you can look at it again, without as much sadness as you may feel now. Just so your grief can run its natural course.
My second piece of unsolicited advice for the day is this: It helps to know just what kind of media will bring you misery & what will bring happier memories. For me, pictures are sweet, even voice recordings of people who've passed on are touching, but for whatever reasons, videos of anyone or anything that have passed on, in good times or bad, are just too much.
Warmest regards. :)

Anyway here's a picture of Lilo from when she was little over a week old. My mom blasted the mother cat away with a water hose because she thought it was a male cat that was running around our garden (They had this habit of pissing all over). Anyway, so we discovered a cat nest full of kittens under some rubble in our backyard while trying to get the cat out of our backyard. When we noticed this we gave it some food and dried the kittens with a towel. A week or so (I don't remember) after this the cat mother left with all the kittens except one. My mom felt she had been hit by bad karma and spent over a hundred dollars nursing the little kitten into what it is today. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of Lilo now.

Sorry to hear the sad news IQLover :( I hope you're doing OK.
I hate to steal Füles' thunder, but I just can't help myself. A new addition to our family is now a week old (since he got here, that is) and I thought it was time to share the lovin' with DC. I know this is pathetic, but between my sister, my mother and I we couldn't narrow the number of pics down any further. Hope you like 'em :)
Meet Chief everyone (his nametag says Diesel, but that is a product of my sister and her boyfriend getting him a tag before they finally decided on his name). He is a purebred Blue English Staffy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staffordshire_Bull_Terrier) (Staffie). He is extremely energetic, for about 20 minutes, after which he sleeps for several hours. There are a few pics here of him with his favorite toy, moo moo.

Not mine. She is terminally bored. She won't even chase a spider for more than a few seconds. If she can't catch it by then, she just walks away.

Like most breeds you can find good and bad. We met both parents of these two and they are stunningly nice animals. All terriers are feisty, so we'll have our hands full with these pups for a while. As a breed they're amiable, smart, loyal, tough, and mischief on four paws waiting to happen.
How's the other dog taking it...? Do they get jealous, like cats?-SKesselman
They can get very jealous. Her nose is out of joint somewhat but a bit of common sense handling will soon get us past that. The puppies have a serious case of heroine worship; they really perk up when she's around.

Even one week after that bad day I have very hard feelings several times a day and dark thoughts. Every thing and place that recalls my dog is hurting. It helped a little bit that I collected all of Cliffs pictures and movies in a digital photoframe that´s always in sight and to visit his grave every day. I never could imagine that I can get so brutal sad after losing my dog.

The only thing to do for that is give it some time.
There's two dogs in particular I've lost that still cause a twinge of sadness every time I think of them. And I think of both of them at least once a day. And despite the fact they've been gone for several years now, losing them never really did stop hurting.
But oddly enough, over time, this same hurt acquired a paradoxically joyous overtone. Go figure. I guess it's something like the "good ache" you get when you exercise. It hurts, but it's also good for you.
Hang in there! :)
-
The only thing to do for that is give it some time.

Hmmm...I don't know if that's always the answer.
I lost my mom 2 years ago, and after 1 year, I would still sit and cry uncontrollably for hours. I would hear a song that reminded me of when I was a kid, and that would be the last thing I'd do that day. I became less functional instead of more, and time was not helping at all. People were noticing that I was still grieving as if she'd just died. I couldn't even look at food she used to make without crying! [As a side note, this is why I joined DC! For a distraction - to keep running across computing terms and ideas I didn't understand, looking them up on Google and learning. It helped, a little, but I was too lazy, so now I just hang out in the Living Room ;D].
Anyway, reluctantly >:( I followed my doctor's advice and went on medication to help keep me out of 'the hole'. It helped a LOT. I still grieve, I still feel my love for her, I still cry, but for minutes, not hours. There are also fewer (and more fitting) triggers now. I just don't fall into such horrible deep sadness like you describe. I'm not at all embarrassed by it, as the circumstances surrounding her death were particularly upsetting.
My point is that time usually helps, but sometimes it doesn't help soon enough, and if the grieving doesn't seem to be changing after a few months, this may be something to consider. I hope you don't need it, but if you do, you're certainly not alone!
I do hope you feel better, and soon!!! :)

A mammoth mistake if you ask me!
As you can see, we're busily training both pups to hover.
This one's a bit low on the front end, so we've instigated additional ear-flapping exercises to develop increased lift.

I only found this thread today, and I hope my comment here is not inappropriate, but I would like to share:
This is my little dog, Max. We got him about a year ago from a local shelter. He'd been kept alone in a car port, after being given up during a messy divorce. When he was rescued he was a mess - severe ear infections, abscessed teeth, fur falling out and on the verge of giving up.
The good people at http://fureverafter.net/ (http://fureverafter.net/) got him back on his feet and I was lucky enough to adopt him in November last year. (You can read his and many other inspirational stories on the site).
He was a terrific dog in every way - calm, playful, affectionate and wonderful company. I work at home most of the time and he would either play or snooze behind my chair the whole time. He even quickly learned that if the phone rings, it's time to sit quietly until I'm done (see picture below, snapped on my iphone just after a call).
He certainly made his way into our hearts with his antics, doggedness (sorry) and all-around lovely temprament.
Unfortunately, just recently he was diagnosed with an extremely aggressive cancer behind his left eye. We were told that treatment was out of the question and despite a no-expense-spared dash to the best experts we could find in Vancouver, all that could be done for him was palliative care.
After being given only a few weeks to live, our little dog lost his fight this morning. It's going to be a lonely Christmas.

So long old pal.
-
he looks so cute and full of personality. i am so sorry for your loss.. just looking at him makes me miss him and i never met him.
the most important thing you need to remember is how happy you must have made him -- especially considering his prior life before you, you made his life worth while and just being there for him meant the world to him i'm sure. what more could a dog ask for.
-
Thank you very much.
I sure hope I did a good job and gave him a happy year. I shall miss the little guy very badly.
It leaves you wondering how one small animal can be so damned unlucky :(
-
It leaves you wondering how one small animal can be so damned unlucky
He probably considered himself very lucky indeed to have had such a good year with you, and given all of the suffering in this world, i would be inclined to agree with him.
-
When my friend was constructing his house here, the workers adopted a drifter dog (female) that since then guarded the place. When I fixed the electricity in this house, I also was endeared to this sweet girl. Two months ago she even produced offspring (5 puppies) and all seemed to be going well for her. She was even nurturing 3 puppies from another dog here in the neighborhood.
But then a disease struck her, I forgot the name, but it was lethal and transferable to humans. My friend has four kids running around the house, so it was quickly decided that she would enter the eternal sleep at the vet and soon. I understand that they did this yesterday.
It is indeed wonderful how dogs can capture your heart and become your friend. Losing them leaves an empty space in heart and mind. Luckily there is her offspring as legacy which I hope turns out as wonderful, gentle and caring as she was.
@timns:
Not only do I understand you, I sympathize with you as well. Dogs live in the here and now...and in the picture he looked happy.

130 Lbs. of pure bred European Shepherd. Meet "Dakota". The owners left the veterinary clinic with a $600+ bill, and did not have enough room for him, so kept him in a bedroom most of the time. I explained to the owners the error of their ways and "rescued" him.
The veterinarian is a friend and our kids go to school together, and she knows Sheena's History (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=19111.msg171164#msg171164), so she told us about Dakota.

It wasn't a frightfully popular name in some parts of the world following WWI, hence "Alsatian".

Until today, I had never heard them called anything but "German Shepherd" ('merican here). Always picture them roaming the perimeter of WWII POW camps from movies and TV shows of my youth.

Last night we rescued a (appx.) 20 month old Rottweiler who is not very well. We think she was from a puppy farm and has been kicked onto the streets.
She is very thin, and lethargic and still lactating. The vet said she gave birth no more than 3 weeks ago which means the litter possibly died.
However, even beyond all that, she is very loving, and has a great little attitude on her and shes getting on OK with Munch (my 10 month old Bull Mastiff X Rottweiler).
Here she is!

In my daughter's words, how Chevy came to live with us:
While walking home from work one morning during early September 2008, my co-workers & I found a little kitten under the cars at the Chevy dealership on Washington Avenue in Nutley. A parking lot on a busy main road is no place for a tiny kitten. It took all four of us to corner & capture her, but we had a successful rescue!
I wrapped her up in my hoodie and brought her home. She's been my little sweetie ever since.
An elusive and shy cat, photos of her are hard to capture.

She is a tiny little thing, a midget cat about the size of a 6 month old kitten (even though she is full grown). Afraid of her own shadow, she spends most of the day hiding, somewhere.
She loves my husband to pieces, though, and thinks SHE is his wife. She comes out of hiding when he comes home from work and follows him around wherever he goes in our apartment. Air popped popcorn is one of her favorite snacks, which she cons out of my husband while they are watching TV together.

It's been a bad month.
We lost two dogs. Both were "rescue" beagles we had adopted from humane organizations.
Daisy was 10. Two weeks ago we came home, had a normal dinner, and then were dismayed to see her suddenly start having convulsions. The vets did what they could, but various tests determined it was most likely an undetected brain tumor she was suffering from. She never regained consciousness. She passed away shortly after midnight five hours later.
Friday lived 16 long years, 15 of them very active, until he was diagnosed with Cushings's Disease early this year. Medication seemed to help out greatly at first. But the last two months were a descending spiral. Yesterday, he apparently had enough, and decided to see where the next step in the great journey would take him.
Farewell you two! You will both be missed.

@ Stoic & Darwin - thanks guys. I've lost a good number of dogs to age. Or untreatable illnesses over the years. (That's a collateral you have to accept when you adopt shelter dogs which are often seriously ill or malnourished as puppies, and don't develop correctly as a result.) And I've accompanied both of my sisters every time they had to bring a dog or cat in when they thought it might be for the last time. This is the only thing I've ever done that doesn't get easier with repetition. And I'm kinda grateful it doesn't.
Oh well... right? :)
Thanks again.

yep , backyard and patio photos. No long lenses. Animals seemed almost eager to "pose". They had the run of the property it was their turf and since I was the food and water guy they gave me a pass. There was never anyone else around to spook them so I could just walk about and take shots at will as long as I moved slowly for the closeups ... More recently circumstances are less ideal. Hope to get a good digital camera though and get more shots before I retire from running a 5 star wild animal retreat.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I'm Glad you appreciated them, its the only record I have of some special relationships. In some ways many of them were more "domesticated " than pets because they chose to be there and yet others remained quite wild-skittish and unaccessible for a closeup. I think the closeness of the lense brings out a bit of the personality, that you don't see from a more customary distance.

Just found this on Facebook, thought it worth the share...
When I was a puppy I entertained you with my antics and made you laugh. You called me your child and despite a number of chewed shoes and a couple of murdered throw pillows, I became your best friend. Whenever I was "bad," you'd shake your finger at me and ask "How could you?" - but then you'd relent and roll me over for a belly rub.
My house training took a little longer than expected, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. I remember those nights of nuzzling you in bed, listening to your confidences and secret dreams, and I believed that life could not be any more perfect. We went for long walks and runs in the park, car rides, stops for ice cream (I only got the cone because "ice cream is bad for dogs," you said), and I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.
Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. I waited for you patiently, comforted you through heartbreaks and disappointments, never chided you about bad decisions, and romped with glee at your homecomings, and when you fell in love.
She, now your wife, is not a "dog person" - still I welcomed her into our home, tried to show her affection, and obeyed her. I was happy because you were happy. Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement. I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them, too. Only she and you worried that I might hurt them, and I spent most of my time banished to another room, or to a dog crate. Oh, how I wanted to love them, but I became a "prisoner of love."
As they began to grow, I became their friend. They clung to my fur and pulled themselves up on wobbly legs, poked fingers in my eyes, investigated my ears and gave me kisses on my nose. I loved everything about them, especially their touch - because your touch was now so infrequent - and I would have defended them with my life if need be.
I would sneak into their beds and listen to their worries and secret dreams. Together we waited for the sound of your car in the driveway. There had been a time, when others asked you if you had a dog, that you produced a photo of me from your wallet and told them stories about me. These past few years, you just answered "yes" and changed the subject. I had gone from being your dog to "just a dog," and you resented every expenditure on my behalf.
Now you have a new career opportunity in another city and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've made the right decision for your "family," but there was a time when I was your only family.
I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the animal shelter. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said "I know you will find a good home for her." They shrugged and gave you a pained look. They understand the realities facing a middle-aged dog or cat, even one with "papers."
You had to pry your son's fingers loose from my collar as he screamed "No, Daddy! Please don't let them take my dog!" And I worried for him and what lessons you had just taught him about friendship and loyalty, about love and responsibility, and about respect for all life. You gave me a goodbye pat on the head, avoided my eyes, and politely refused to take my collar and leash with you. You had a deadline to meet and now I have one, too.
After you left, the two nice ladies said you probably knew about your upcoming move months ago and made no attempt to find me another good home. They shook their heads and asked "How could you?"
They are as attentive to us here in the shelter as their busy schedules allow. They feed us, of course, but I lost my appetite days ago. At first, whenever anyone passed my pen, I rushed to the front, hoping it was you - that you had changed your mind - that this was all a bad dream...or I hoped it would at least be someone who cared, anyone who might save me. When I realized I could not compete with the frolicking for attention of happy puppies, oblivious to their own fate, I retreated to a far corner and waited.
I heard her footsteps as she came for me at the end of the day and I padded along the aisle after her to a separate room. A blissfully quiet room. She placed me on the table, rubbed my ears and told me not to worry. My heart pounded in anticipation of what was to come, but there was also a sense of relief. The prisoner of love had run out of days. As is my nature, I was more concerned about her. The burden which she bears weighs heavily on her and I know that, the same way I knew your every mood.
She gently placed a tourniquet around my foreleg as a tear ran down her cheek. I licked her hand in the same way I used to comfort you so many years ago. She expertly slid the hypodermic needle into my vein. As I felt the sting and the cool liquid coursing through my body, I lay down sleepily, looked into her kind eyes and murmured "How could you?"
Perhaps because she understood my dogspeak, she said "I'm so sorry." She hugged me and hurriedly explained it was her job to make sure I went to a better place, where I wouldn't be ignored or abused or abandoned, or have to fend for myself - a place of love and light so very different from this earthly place. With my last bit of energy, I tried to convey to her with a thump of my tail that my "How could you?" was not meant for her. It was you, My Beloved Master, I was thinking of. I will think of you and wait for you
The moral of the story...
Love your pets like they love you, and never dismiss them as "Just an animal" ... They are part of our families and part of our lives...and if you have committed to getting a pet, you should treat them as good as you would a child.

We are going to lose our beautiful sweet Tuffy! She has been sick on and off for months, and each time the treatment from Vet has worked. Last week he found she had an enlarged Liver with a mass inside.... :( We have 2 options:
1. Put her in Hospital overnight for sedation, scan, biopsy etc. (She's never been away from us) and Vet says we may not see anything and in the end it most likely is not curable!
2. Keep her comfortable - at mo the injections and pain meds have worked wonders and she is eating, drinking, barking, running etc.) and spend however much time we have with her enjoying her company.
We have chosen the latter as we do not want to put her through any stress! Vet says he's not sure how much more treatment he can give, but next time she gets sick we'll make decisions....
She has given us almost 11 years of joy and love and we won't let her suffer! As you can imagine we are very heart sore, especially when she is so well at the moment.
:'(

Sorry to hear your news, CleverCat :( A real sweetheart and I think that you have made the right decision. Enjoy your time with her.

Sorry to hear that CleverCat.. She has been very lucky to have you as owners for so many years.

CleverCat, It is never easy, they stick in our hearts and give us unforgettable moments.
The love you have for her will never leave, and she is lucky to have had such a great life :)
Here's to hoping she has a full year of happiness ahead of her! She seems like a fighter!

Sorry to hear that :(

Hey Clever Cat...
Some good-byes are harder than others. As is doing the right thing.
It's a responsibility we accept when we bring a dog or cat into our lives.
I'm sure you'll do what's best for her when and if a decision is called for.
I'm sure she knows you will too.

Greyhounds are always happy to pose in a sleeping position for you. Laziest dogs I have known. Except for the sprint to the food bowls and then to the soft comfy places. :P
Top to bottom these are Johnson (7), Athena (10) and Finch (14).
-
@x16wda - are all yours "rescue" greyhounds? :)
-
Yes, indeed. (Even the cats we have had were rescues.)
A year after we were married my wife and I adopted as a companion for our Golden a wonderful 10-year old girl, Rae-Rae, who had been living in the rescue kennel for almost a year because she was old, she had unsightly (though benign) tumors on her teats, and she had horrible teeth. But she had beautiful deep brown eyes that sparkled and laughed at us and she delighted in our attention. She was a true angel :-*. We had her for three years before a cancer took her from us suddenly, less than a month after we lost our golden retriever.
Since then we have taken in mostly tough sells - one big girl who was terrified of the wind and the feel of grass under her feet, another girl who was dropped off after she had damaged her back from a fall and couldn't walk properly. One girl we adopted, also 10, had developed bone cancer; she was with us for almost two months and had just started feeling happy and excited when her humans came home when things came to a head. Johnson had developed seizures, and Athena was 9 when her owner became tired of her.
Our times with our dogs are short, but that's just a reason to treasure every moment. I think that lesson has helped us with our kids, who we adopted in our late 40s; there are often times when I have to grit my teeth and tell myself "treasure this moment!" :P
-
Wow x16wda, not sure how to express it but thanks and

@x16wda - I suspected as much. My hat is off to you sir!
Our past and present pet lineup included: eight cats + seven dogs (save for two who came from breeders) + one lop-ear rabbit who came to us as rescue animals. Please don't even get me started about the horses. :)

@40hz - my wife would like to get you started on the horses! :D Personally speaking, I know they are smart and wonderful creatures, but I am just intimidated by the size.

-Tinman57
That pretty much matches my experience too. ;D
Some are smarter than others. But as a collective group, they're not the world's smartest creatures as we measure smart. But that's just to us. As horses sans human involvement goes, they understand everything they need to understand to do what horses do. (Which is mostly: walk, run, look around, drink water, reproduce, sleep, eat, and secrete waste.)
But to their credit, horses certainly are interesting 'people' to get to know. And they sure are pretty to look at.
:)
@X16wda - tell you what... why don't we just pair up the horse nuts and let them get started while the rest of us head out for drinks. They won't even notice we're gone. ;D

The dogs are Alaska Malamut? My brother had one. Lovely animal, two pale blue eyes and couldn't bark for the life of her. Howling like a wolf was not a problem though. People were always immediately afraid when they laid eyes on her and I have never met a friendlier dog than her.
Beautiful race of dogs. Keep em close to the arctic circles though, because if you don't you'll be cleaning up the hair they shed on an hourly basis more or less. ;)

Yeah :( Spent ages looking for them. We had an idea who took them but no proof. I had also been offered a fair amount of money for the dogs within earshot of that person we suspected, so that somewhat made me even more suspicious of them. Like I said though, never any proof so nothing I could do.

Beats me...I've never seen it before and it weren't wearing a name tag :D (e.g. it's not a pet). It just showed up this morning, hung out for a bit, and wandered off. I was actually surprised it hung out long enough for me to fumble around with the phone camera 6 times trying to get the thing to zoom and focus at the same time. -Stoic Joker
Believe it or not, it was not brought about by Smokey and the bandit. Great movie, by the way.
I'm a ham radio operator and a day before arranging to pick up Fred I in July of1997, I went on the air with my gang and asked for suggestions for a name for my soon to be Basset Hound. Someone suggested I name it after one of the senior members of the group who just happened to be named Fred.
The rest is history.
By the way, that picture of Fred I was taken in a 1997 Toyota RAV4 which I bought especially for him because of the room behind the back seats. I still drive that 18 year old car and all the Freds have ridden back there.

Thanks guys. We have virtually decided we cannot have another Cat as we are surrounded by big dogs and the stress will be too much! A small dog such as a Yorkie will be much safer and I am home almost 24/7 so it will be well cared for.
So unfair that my pet choice is dictated by my surroundings!
Tinkerbell crept into our hearts from day one and even my Mum is crying... :(
The house is 'empty' without my little 'White tornado' :'(
-
My deepest sympathies to you for Tinkerbell, CleverCat. I grew up with cats and dogs, but spent my adult life with cats. If you ever want to try for another kitty, when you put her outside for the first couple weeks -or months-, every time she goes out, put her in an all-wire (maximum x-y-z visibility) cage big enough to take a step inside of; she'll be all ears, eyes, and nose in every direction, but be restricted so she can learn the dangers through her senses before being exposed to or entering into their domain and danger zone, and also orient herself to her own territory. I've done this, so I put great faith in this method. For the road out front, sit beside the cage with a slap stick of two flat thin boards to make an artificial 'bang' when vehicles go past, to startle her and build a healthy mental association-aversion reflex. Again my deepest and most sincere sympathy and condolences. PS - I posted this under the assumption you have a solid 2-meter high fenced back and side yard, and that the neighbor's dogs don't ever run loose; otherwise, all bets are off. BTW, I once had a pint-size kitten leap almost straight up and attain the top of a 2-meter wooden board fence and hook her little paws over the top; hence, the cage training regimen approach, which worked quite well in teaching her to beware of unfamiliar dangers, and not to wander. Another 'feline survival tactic' is to set up many escape routes and narrow access barricades on your property which only a cat should be able to take advantage of; trees, porch crawl spaces, escape holes, and so on.
-
Sorry for delay in replying but was busy adopting a rescue cat! She was rescued and given to my neighbour's niece who had to re home her after 3 months as her Himalayan was fighting her. Previous owner shaved her and did a hack job....
Meet Isabella Maria Garcinez - a Pedigree Silver Back Chinchilla who doesn't climb trees but offending tree will be drastically trimmed!

holt you are correct - 6 foot concrete wall and a 30 meter driveway to road with 10 foot front gates (This is crime ridden South Africa!) She bolts indoors at any noise...
CleverCat, that is an awesome pussycat! :-* Loved her at first sight! The all-wire cage I used as a 'kitten playpen' to yard train our cat was actually an old chinchilla cage. Big and roomy even for a full size cat, and even more so for a junior.
I just wanted to add another tried and proven method for even the worst dog problem; toss the dog/s treats (from a safe distance) daily, or whenever you see them. Get the owner's permission if you can, or sneak-toss the treats if you must. It is virtually impossible for a dog to eat and bark or bite at the same time. At first, the dog will be suspicious and grudge you an angry bark, but over time, a few days or weeks, he'll change his attitude, and can become much more friendly. The only dogs this may fail with are those little high-strung yappers, or specially trained guard dogs. It may not stop him chasing cats, but his basic disposition will be enormously improved, which is definitely a step in the right direction. I've done this many times.
-
My friends say she is Royalty!
We don't even see those dogs behind the wall and they live with a cat so the owner was perplexed they would attack...

There are several cats in my household, but the one who declares me as her "person" is Casey. She's a little sweetheart with a soft meow and purr. Her favorite toys are crumpled papers and cardboard boxes. While she usually sleeps with someone else in the evenings, she like sleeping on the cat tree next to my desk while I program.

Sadly, my kitty passed away today. It's only just now hitting me.
He was an angora that I found as a stray sometime in 2001 or so. I was working a paper route very early (~3am) in a low-income housing complex when I turned a corner and about a dozen kitties scattered. I made a smooching noise, and the fluffiest white kitten I had ever seen was the only one who turned back. I gave him a few pets and he followed me around the complex on my route.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I had wrapped up my route and he was still following me, so I took a look at him in the streetlight. His eyes were crusty, he had some tape on his tail, and the whiskers on the left side of his face had been burned off, probably by some neighborhood kids. I decided then to take him home and take him to the vet when they opened. The vet said he was about 4 months old, and had a mild case of distemper. She gave us some medicine and he became a permanent part of our household since then. We named him "Casper" cause he was so white. He had the most loving temperament, always down for a good petting or lap sit, and even when we scolded him, he would just lay over on his side and give us "the look" demanding a kitty massage.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
About 5 or 6 years ago, he developed cataracts and was totally blind within a few months. That didn't stop him going where he pleased, and he never lost his way around the house and yard. About 2 months ago, we started noticing him slowing down quite a bit, and losing some strength in his back legs. He seemed to recover a bit after a week or two, but never got back to full strength. The vet said he was just getting older and to just keep him comfortable. As long as he was eating and drinking normally (which he did), he would be fine. About three weeks ago, it seemed it was all he could do to lay on his bed, eat a teaspoon of food every now and then, and take himself to the litter box. Eventually, he wouldn't eat more than a bite or two if at all and couldn't make it to the litter box, so we made him a bed out of a foam pad, a plastic bag and a towel. This morning, my wife called me at work to let me know he had passed. My son said that around 8am he meowed feebly a few times, then stopped breathing.
I only wish I had been there.

Love the first image here especially:

Some days ago my beloved cat died. A car ran over him.
I lived a loving relationship with that cat. Now a part of me has gone away with him.
RIP my dear Romeo.

Oh giampy I am so sorry... You must be devastated.. Our thoughts go out to you and Romeo.

Can you embed the images on the forum? :)

Pardon?

hi Hammerhead,
we get a lot of spam here (probably like most forums). People like Stephen (Stephen66515) give of their spare time to delete said spam and keep the forum clean.
I saw your link (on the previous page) and decided to *not* follow it. Maybe you've been lucky online, but I've experienced a few viruses simply from visiting a site.
So whether you post the images here or not, is your choice, but I think it would be nice to be nice to the people that keep this forum up and running.

Sorry. Don't want to be rude. First time I've on any forum in years. Now I remember why, so many self appointed "experts". No need to reply, I won't be back. As for getting a virus just by visiting a web site you must be utterly clueless how to protect yourself.
-
I know Hammerhead said they won't be back, but the website is (at the moment) completely safe and it's a great picture - hint: check out the background.

Not entirely sure how we are coming across as "self appointed experts" when simply asking you to post the pictures directly onto the forum, rather than expecting the world to trust a random link by a random person (something, by the way, every ACTUAL expert in the field would strongly advise against).
Also, by starting out your sentence with "Don't want to be rude", then continuing with what came across as a very rude statement...Quite the contradiction.

I did see this myself (I checked via an API I use which snapshots websites without you needing to actually visit them), but the original point of "random people with zero trust ratings cannot be trusted" still stands :P
Also...That guy was VERY rude.
Anyhow: Let's all get back to the topic at hand...
SHOW US THE DOGGOS!

In my opinion, if someone is supporting, I wouldn't even say anything, unless going on archive.is proves it to be wrong. They paid money at some point to support the site. Surely that counts for something...

He also joined back in 2013 and only made his first post today - account could quite easily have been hijacked or...well anything really (also it only takes 1cent to become a supporting member).
At any rate, it was only a friendly suggestion which was met with...well...you can see above haha

Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to our furry feline family members this year but we then adopted these guys outside our sliding glass door. We have about 9 different species that come by for millet, sunflower seeds, and peanuts.

Wiggins - the newest member of our family. A 7 mo. old miniature long-haired dachshund. Probably the hands-down coolest, most laid back dog we've ever met.
