Title: Firefox --3.5-- Extensions: Your favorite or most useful
Post by: Hirudin on July 01, 2009, 12:08 AM
The other "Firefox extensions topic (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=1685.0)" is long and quite old so I figured a new one is in order. But, if the powers that be decide to delete this thread that's no big deal.

Now that I'm back to using Firefox I've realized how much I enjoy tweaking my browser. Here's my list so far...

I hate to say it, but i really wish we could vote for questions/answers like StackOverflow/ServerFault on threads like these.

1 point for suggesting Nuke Anything Enhanced. Thanks :)

Ehtyar.

I prefer Aardvark (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4111), (kudos to Mark0 (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=1685.msg40530#msg40530)), rather than Nuke Anything Enhanced - saves a lot of right-click menu work which I find always annoying.

And rather than Findbar Basics, I just remove the find qualifier, (usually '/'), so that when I start typing, (outside a text box), it starts searching, then F3 to repeat as necessary - the Find bar disappears after a few seconds of no entry or just hit Escape.

The add-ons that I have normally installed:
Aardvark (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4111) - Override compatibility and it still works.  Let's you remove whatever you don't want on the page temporarily before printing/saving.
Adblock Plus (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865) - Gets rid of ads.
Advanced Dork (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2144) - Highlight a word and search using Google's advanced operators, eg. intitle, link, movie, etc, etc
BugMeNot (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6349) - Let's you try and access a site using registration someone else has provided.
CustomizeGoogle (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/743) - Let's me disappear Google ads except when I don't want to as well as a bit of obfuscation.
Download Statusbar (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/26) - As per Hirudin's post above.
ErrorZilla Mod (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3336) - Gives a few more options to a failed page load, (I'll probably replace it with ErrorZilla Plus (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5398)).
FireFTP (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/684) - A really excellent FTP client, saves me opening a DOpus lister :)
Forecastfox (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/398) - Saves me from opening the blinds to see if it's raining.
Greasemonkey (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748) - Can make websites so much more than what they are.  Coupled with Greasefire (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8352) to make finding scripts easier.
Linkification (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/190) - Converts text links into clickable links.
Nightly Tester Tools (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6543)
NoScript (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722) - Stop unwanted script/Flash from executing.
Speed Dial (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4810) - Quick access to your most visited sites.
Tab Mix Plus (http://tmp.garyr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9864) - Make Tabs work the way you want.  You need to get the latest build from the forum.
TrashMail.net (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1813) - Create disposable email addresses for websites.

Wow, Aardvark is very, very cool, thanks for suggesting it! I didn't know Nuke Anything had competition. I'll keep both installed, but I have a feeling Aardvark will be the only one I install in the future. The "Kill"/"RIP" feature sounds awesome, have you used it 4wd?

No, I only use Aardvark when I want to print/save specific info from a page otherwise I prefer to see it complete, sans ads of course.

Hirudin already mentioned Findbar Basics which I recommended in the old thread.

I'll re-mention Lazarus, an extension that can save web form data in case something goes wrong in the submission of the data you're not stuck having to type all that crap in again.

http://lazarus.interclue.com/

Oh, and I've used Download Statusbar for years. It is SO much better than Firefox's built-in download list & has many different ways to customize it.

I only after upgrading today & found it unusable without this one

Tab Mix Plus (http://tmp.garyr.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9864) - Make Tabs work the way you want.  You need to get the latest build from the forum.

thanks for that

Firefox does a Google 'I feel lucky' search by default for anything you type in the address bar that isn't an address.

It is not only the "I feel lucky" function. You can set it to display up to 50 results.

does Cyber Search allow the first result to be launched if you press return without actively selecting it (a la FARR) ?

I know there is another extension that does that but I dont know name of it or if it works with v.3.5
(I searched the other FF exts thread but didnt find it)

Xmarks - Though the amount of memory and processor usage is pretty criminal.
All-in-One Sidebar - Control your sidebar and have everything there instead of popping up in windows.
Compact Menu 2 - Cause Firefox needs less menus.
Evernote Web Clipper - Cause no matter what, Evernote is still cool to me.  8)
Fast Dial - I know there are other alternative, but it gets the job done
IE Tab - For those times you just have to use IE, but don't want to.
Linkification - Cause everything that looks like a link should be clickable.
OpenBook - Cause I hate the limits of the new bookmark dialog
ReadItLater - Another extension that links to another service- but it makes keeping track of things without cluttering bookmarks a breeze.
Smark Bookmarks Bar - My bookmarks bar has too many entries- this keeps me from having to scroll
Smart Stop/Reload - Why do you need to see both at any time anyway?
Update Notifier - Keeps all of the above in sync :)

I have others at home I don't have here at work, which is why I should use that one that lets you sync extensions between browsers...

-Perry Mowbray (July 16, 2009, 08:59 AM)

I tried installing it, but it didn't work properly. I don't know if it that's because I'm running over 30 extensions and something is interfering with it or because my Firefox profile is very old being used from Firefox version to Firefox version and from one OS install to the next for many years. I just didn't have the energy to sort it out.

Tab Mix Plus has ALWAYS been a favorite.  I install that even before NoScript (#2), & DownThemAll (#3).  Lastly, I always add IETab for those sites that INSIST that the IE engine is the ONLY one that can render HTML (Stupid sites - don't the webmasters know there are standards for a reason? </rant>)

After that, I usually install, in no particular order:

UnPlugged - a FireFox extention that does more or less the same thing URL Snooper does, but it is dead simple to use.  No configuration, just use it and it either works or doesn't.  When it doesn't, that is where URL Snooper comes in  :)

ForecastFox or ForecastFox Enhanced (depends on mood at the time) - see above

Flagfox - tells you which country the server serving content appears to be located.

I also have played with, and have on a few installations:

SpeedDial - Open several preset pages at once.

FlashGot - Another download manager I used before DownThemAll.

FEBE - Bookmark synchroniser

Delicious - Online, social bookmarking

Firebug - Website debugger

iMacros - Create macros for Firefox (not as useful to me as first imagined, because there is not that much I do so repetitively).

Web Developer - Website development helper

I couldn't do without Adblock Plus (http://adblockplus.org/en/).

However, I have come to like Vimperator (http://vimperator.org/) A LOT, because I also love vim (http://www.vim.org/).

Better Privacy (http://netticat.ath.cx/extensions.html) and NoScript (http://noscript.net/) I use to protect a little more of my privacy (I hope it works).

And because I still haven't found a decent replacement for Google Reader, I use Google Redesigned (http://www.globexdesigns.com/) to do away with the boring default look.

There was some discussion of Last Pass on the earlier FF extensions thread.  That's how I learned about it, I think.  I like it a lot, though I prefer RoboForm on Firefox; I find it's somewhat more easily controllable.  I use Last Pass primarily for Opera, since Opera can't use RoboForm.  Of course, RoboForm costs $$ whereas Last Pass is free.  I suspect that if I didn't already own RoboForm, I might just decide to go with Last Pass for all my browsers.

Don't forget Hyperwords (http://www.hyperwords.net/). Just select any text on a webpage and choose from a number of useful searches, translation, conversions, etc! It even makes a handy search bar replacement.

I love tree-style tab because I have a 24" monitor and keep many tabs open all of the time. It allows you to place the tab bar on the left side of the screen vertically, which works really well.

I also love Colorful Tabs, which allows you to color-code tabs and thereby find the one you want much more easily.

And I use Resurrect Pages often to find earlier versions of web pages that have "died".

Others of much value are:

WOT - Web of Trust protects you from surfing to dangerous pages

Update Notifier - a priceless add-on that alerts you when extensions are updated

Thunderbird Biff - to quickly open Thunderbird

Split Pannel - works perfectly to see two different web pages side-by-side

Scrapbook+ - a truly great webpage capture utility that allows you to save webpages in user-named folders. No more losing a webpage that has been abandoned.

Save Link in Folder - I save astronomy photos in my spacegifs folder, wallpaper in my wallpaper folder, downloaded executables in my downloads folder, etc. and this add-on makes it easy to do

Auto-copy - This has to be one of the most useful of all, you just highlight text on a web page (or email) and it copies it automatically to paste elsewhere. Great!

Two of my  most indispensable v. 3.5 extensions  are  "Scrapbook" which captures and saves web pages ,saving a lot of printer ink and "Go to Top", an add-on that instantly takes you to the top or bottom of a page rather than scrolling up or down.

If such a site has a search field, I use the keyworded bookmark feature from FF: just right-click in the field and select "Add a keyword for this search", give it a name and a keyword, preferably a short one.

Since the awesome bar also searches your bookmarks you can now directly open search results: just type in the keyword, a space, and the search term as you would enter them in the input field, and finally hit enter.

Of course this does not add anything to list of search engines... however, I never used that extra input field anyway, since I am much quicker typing "keyword search terms<enter>" than "ctrl+k search terms, click to select engine, <enter>". The bookmark-approach works very well with the almighty vimperator

However, some sites such as denic.de have built their search form thus you need javascript to submit it. I find this very bad behavior, and it breaks the keyword search...

Another thumbs up for Update Notifier, it updates addons in the background without the annoying restart / update notifications (tick the install and untick the alert preference to make this happen)

Post by: Innuendo on August 14, 2009, 10:56 AM
justice,
Unticking the alert preference in Update Notifier isn't necessary as the only alert you get is the little indicator in the upper right hand corner goes from gray to orange. No annoying dialogs pop up at all.

This, coupled with Download Statusbar, keeps unwanted Firefox dialog boxes at bay.

Post by: MilesAhead on August 14, 2009, 12:59 PM
housetier I haven't tried the keyword search, but I like to use Context Search that uses the search engine list.  I can highlight a word or name and search a Wiki or dictionary or whatnot.  It can be set to open the result in a new tab in the background. A frequent search is IMDB or I can check spelling of words that aren't in the built-in spell check dictionary using a free online dictionary.  The generator form is cool for sites that don't have a prefabricated search plugin yet.

Of course for quick and dirty there's always the google 'site' keyword to search a particular domain.

Post by: housetier on August 14, 2009, 05:16 PM
MilesAhead, I know what you mean.

But as a keyboard user I am quicker typing the word, than using the mouse to click for highlighting. In vimperator it's just this "t d whatever": this will open dict.cc with the search term whatever in a new tab.

However, I know some people are very good with their mouse so it is good they can choose whatever method they prefer :)

I think I'm resistant to keyboard maximum efficiency because then I'd have to remember the accelerator keys.  I don't have to remember the mouse. That was one thing that hassled me about Linux.  It was nearly impossible to find an editor with key combos the same as Windows editors.  It just never felt natural always trying to look through XEmacs or some other editor for the editing command keys.  I realize if I did it all the time like the true Linuxen I'd learn eventually, but then it would feel like chucking all my Dos-based knowledge.

Long-winded way of saying, with the mouse I don't have to think.  Just react. :)

This is probably as good of a time as any to ask this...

One thing that is very cool about Chrome is they have eliminated the stand alone search field and made it so anything (that doesn't follow normal URL rules) typed into the omnibar* gets searched for by the default search engine when you press <enter>. I figure Chrome knows that something typed into the omnibar that doesn't have a domain is NOT a URL so it doesn't waste time polling the DNS. It will also automatically search when multiple words are typed into the omnibar (I'm guessing for the same reason: URLs don't have spaces). Firefox will do the same thing with multiple words, but if you type a single word into the awesome bar and press <enter> it will wait an eternity (10 seconds or so) before searching. I'm assuming Firefox is polling the DNS for that single word with all the common domains after it.

Do any of you know how to make Firefox stop assuming I'm too lazy to type the domain and immediately search using my default search engine?

To put it a different way: if I type "winrar" into the awesomebar Firefox takes literally 10 seconds to open a Google search for the term "winrar". Is there a way to make this instant (without having to also type a search-keyword)?

* I think that's what the address bar is called in Google Chrome

This is supposed to do it:
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Location+bar+search#Turning_off_and_on_2

but it doesn't work for me

edit: when I go to the source page for the info, turns out "domain guessing" only happens after a dns failed lookup.  So that won't fix it after all.
Title: Re: Firefox --3.5-- Extensions: Your favorite or most useful
Post by: MilesAhead on August 16, 2009, 01:51 PM
Man this thing is stupid!!  I read in Location bar docs that domain guessing won't be invoked if Internet Keyword Search is enabled.  Great.  I enable Internet Keyword Search.  Now if I type "crapola" into the Location bar, it doesn't add 'www' or '.com' but it converts it to this: http://crapola/ and does a DNS lookup!!!!  Guess I'll keep using the search engine input!!
Title: Re: Firefox --3.5-- Extensions: Your favorite or most useful
Post by: Hirudin on August 16, 2009, 07:31 PM
I've been just adding a second word as a work around. Usually the second word is something like "a" or "the".

Hmmm... I just got an idea, instead of a word I'll add a symbol (like ' or .) that way the search wont be messed up.

On that token, making the keyword for Google "g" works almost as good. I guess that way you could use "e" for eBay, "w" for Wikipedia, and "7" for dictionary.com (just kidding).

Anyone using an external app link launcher alternative to Launchy?  Just seems like if Launchy doesn't automatically configure an already installed app and use it correctly, nothing I do can fix it.

I'd prefer something where you can add another app in a few clicks and it works.
As example some image types the browser either doesn't want to handle them at all or wants to open another browser instance when I'd rather just launch Irfanview.  Even though Launchy shows Irfanview enabled, it never shows it in the context menu for image links.

No I already use FARR.  What I mean is the Launchy Firefox extension.  You right click in the browser and it opens another browser or another app with the selection.  Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work with image viewers like Irfanview or XnView. It lists them as enabled, but when you right click on a link to an image you get everything else but an image viewer.  It's been that way for awhile now so I don't think the author is interested in fixing it.

edit: unless maybe there's a FF plugin. I have stayed away from FARR plugins mainly because there's too many of them to explorer for the moment.

ok, my mistake then.. sorry :(
didn't realize we were talking about a FF extension called "Launchy" -- I suppose that makes a lot more sense now that it is being discussed in this thread.
Sorry!! I'll go hide in the corner in shame.

No biggy. I just thought maybe there was an inside joke and I wasn't gettin' it. :)
I hate it when that happens. :)

Speaking of FARR I figured out how to open the current FF page in Opera.  Using Pasty I highlight the location and hit the Pasty hotkey.  I set the "search hotkey" to the FARR hotkey.  FARR opens and the macro types in the URL.  I set Opera as external alternative browser.

There's probably better ways of doing it but for now this works no matter which browser I start with.

With FF's OperaView extension, just right-click and select "View this Page in Opera."

If the browser is already showing the picture, and I right click the picture, Launchy shows "open in Irfanview" but if I right click on the link, I don't get any graphics viewers in the list.  Just video players.  If it knows enough to list the video players it should know enough to list the graphics viewers/editors.  But it doesn't.  It's just way quirky.  I don't know how many times I've added an app, then tried to configure it even using the xml doodad.  It's never worked for me yet.  The app has to be already installed when I install Launchy, then if it auto configs it, it might work.

Searchbastard is the most powerful Firefox Search extension I have ever used. I do not know how I got by without it before. Here is a brief description pulled from the Mozilla addons site:

"Quickly access your search engines and powerful "Searchbastard engines", which provides search options and can clean up the search results. Group engines, and perform multisearch. The "selection search" feature allows you to quickly look up words on a page, by selecting the text and typing the engine alias. The "adressfield search" extends the firefox feature, so you can also search the groups and searchbastard engines by typing the alias followed by the searchterm in the address field. The searchbar allows you to quickly perform a search, and quickly repeat that search using another engine. Everything is extremely customizable: You can arrange the frames in a multisearch, you can assign actions to all toolbar events, etc. The plugin is lightweight, and features are dynamically loaded when needed.

I use it in conjunction with Add to Search Bar or create a search plugin with one of the following sites:

Ready2Search Search Plugin Maker (Can Use Custom Favicons for Search Plugin)
http://ready.to/search/en/

or

SearchPlugins.net Search Plugin Maker
http://www.searchplugins.net/generate.aspx

I also use a bookmarklet from https://www.squarefree.com/bookmarklets/forms.html to convert Search fields from post to get method when needed.

The ability to search multiple engines at one time, use different engines by simply clicking an icon, and create custom search groups make this a must have extension for me!!

Do any of you know how to make Firefox stop assuming I'm too lazy to type the domain and immediately search using my default search engine?

If you haven't tried it yet, there's a new addon does this: Advanced Address Bar (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/9450).

Web bugs and tracking services. Those small, invisible things on web pages that report back to The Man what you're viewing, what you're reading, and what you're doing.

I hate them with a passion as does everyone who values their privacy. In my quest to combat these evil things I have discovered Ghostery. It's a Firefox extension that makes you aware of over 210 different web bugs & tracking services that may be on the web sites you visit and gives you the ability to block them if you wish.

Launchy ...
... if I right click on the link, I don't get any graphics viewers in the list.  Just video players.

Both these links (to one and the same picture #Edited: one to the actual photo, and the other to the page containing the (link to the) photo#) should make Launchy suggest XnView etcetera,: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2528/3884282440_c13bc94a1a_o.jpg
, and: http://www.flickr.com/photos/28570981@N08/3884282440/sizes/o/

At least it will in my setup (FF 3.0). But of course, I only installed Launchy today, so I don't know yet if it will loose its wits when I install something new. Will Launchy get "repaired" if you re-install it?

The only thing that gets fixed by reinstall, is it will actually use apps in the list.  IOW, if I add a graphics viewer after Launchy is installed, it won't use it no way nohow no matter how I configure it.  It has to be there when Launchy is installed and autoconfigured by Launchy.  Even then, it won't work with the graphics links.  Guess I'll have to live with it unless I want to explore the morass of Windows clipboard handling myself. I don't look forward to messing with other than text afa that goes. :) Maybe if I found an AutoIt3 UDF where all the tough stuff is already done. :)

Regarding the subject of the thread, extensions for FF 3.5: I did update my Firefox 3.0 when the "final" 3.5.3 was launched, but removed it again and went back to 3.0, because too many extensions were broken. Far too many! Yes, 3.5 is notable faster, but other than that, all I could think of was how I was missing this and that feature.

Yes, MR Tech Toolkit should do the trick. Or, if you don't want to install a 300K extension just for the purpose, then you may disable extension compatibility check manually in about:config or in prefs.js. The item to look for is "extensions.checkCompatibility" (you have to add the item manually if you're editing prefs.js directly for it doesn't exist by default).

Or another alternative is to just directly edit the extensions to provide support for Firefox v3.5x. However, there might be a very good reason why they don't work with v3.5x. You could end up with a real mess on your hands if you are not careful.

As I advised a few other people on this forum it might benefit you greatly to do a manual check for updates to your extensions to work with v3.5. When I upgraded from v3.0 I had lots of extensions that did not work, but when I checked the extensions' home pages and http://addons.mozilla.org manually I found updates to all of them to work with v3.5 that Firefox's auto-update were not picking up.

Failing that, give us a list of extensions that do not work for you & we may be able to suggest replacements that work just as well or better than the ones you are using.

Actually it has nothing to do with FF version.  Launchy has always worked like that on my machines.  Maybe it just doesn't like HP I don't know.

Anyway, to get back on topic, someone recommended PrintPDF (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5971)  It's cool, among other uses, for those situations when you get a receipt for an online purchase that doesn't "save page as" properly and you don't really want to print out hard copy.  Just "print" to PDF using this addon and save the file in your receipt folder.  Works with my build of Minefield using Mr Tech.

May I suggest for those pages that won't "save page as" properly to install the Mozilla Archive Format plugin:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/212

Web pages save as one file & allows Firefox to work with IE's MHT files.

Can the file be read by another Firefox without MAF, or is it that all Firefoxes have MAF?

okay, I have finally found the page (http://maf.mozdev.org/maff-file-format.html)

Instead of printing I just take a screen capture when I've ordered something online. I of course use Screenshot Captor to make this process easy.

That's what I suggested on another board when the person wanted to save the receipt.  All of the above sound like they work pretty well.
