The purpose of this thread is to provide @IainB with sunsets (and maybe others) and not fill Show us the View Outside Your Window with them.

Aww, thanx, @Arizona Hot. :-[
Hey, that one's a really nice shot. Good camera/lens.

but it has manual setting too doesn't it?
I cant remember the model name, but remember checking it out when you mentioned it before: looked good to me (whether using manual or auto).
Best thing to do with a new camera I think, is to go through all the settings to see what changes are possible. And if you dont understand things, look them up at some stage in the manual (which can take years if you're anything like me).
My first year with a digital camera, I had it set to auto, but with center/spot metering and focus. Sometimes auto will make a scene too light or too dark, I could compensate by focusing the camera on one area (e.g. an extra bright area) and then keeping focus (keep button half-pressed) and reframe the image to what I want. That way I could mostly make the image brighter or darker.
(apologies if telling you stuff you already know.)
-
but it has manual setting too doesn't it?
-tomos
Definitely, but I haven't needed to use them and like you said it would take a long time to learn how to set them. These are casual pictures. I am not seeking artistic or photographic perfection or exotic attainment. If you want the manual you can get it here (http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/4419606121.pdf)or it is attached below.
-
I am not going to restrict this thread to just sunsets. Below is this morning's sunrise. I would have posted it sooner but I forgot I had already transferred all the pictures to the computer and the only thing left in the camera was a sunrise video I mistakenly made. :-[ (if you want to see a mistake video let me know).

Yes, nice camera. When I downloaded that handbook - "Sony Camera - DSC-HX20-HX20V-HX30-HX30V - Cyber-shot User Guide" (per the "View from my window" thread) - I saw what a seriously good camera that was.
Sony really do make some consistently reliable and good-quality gear, suitably over-engineered so as to be fit-for-purpose as a "general-purpose" camera, which could encompass a wide range of user requirements -
"You just want point-and-shoot? Yeah, sure, it can do that too."
I was sold on Sony cameras a while back when I bought a refurbished Sony DSC-H55 Cyber-Shot camera.
There's a lot of in-camera processing of images that could be added to digital cameras (some has been added as a trial, but seems to have been withdrawn in later models). Sony don't seem to do too much of that though, and that sort of processing now often seems to turn up in smartphone cameras.

As author of the OP (opening post) of this thread, you can change the title of the thread in the OP. if you do that, then all new posts made after that point will then contain the modified title - e.g., you could call it (say) "Arizona Eagle Eye", or something.
You could also edit/update the OP itself to say what other, new things/subjects you are currently adding to (including in) the thread.
In this way, one can develop a sort of "curated" discussion thread with an evolving purpose - though I dislike using that term "curated" as it can be a cliché.
-
No, sunsets were just becoming too much a part of the View thread, so I'm putting them here.

Sunrise-shadowed mountains
-
A less-than-awe-inspiring picture of tonight's sunset here(or tomorrow's sunset here if you are on the other side of the International Date Line?). It is probably of adequate quality for IainB .
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
@Arizona Hot: Hey don't knock your own photos! The panoramic one "Sunrise-shadowed mountains" looked almost like a screen print, but, unlike most screen-prints, it was quite beautiful.
And that latest pic has a beautiful collection of different-coloured clouds/sky.
Nature won't allow you to take a bad shot, because there are none. :D
I just wish I could see those scenes with my own eyeballs though, because I bet they'd look even more beautiful to the human eye, as they are happening.

Actually I took 12 shots of that sunset, of which I think this is the best. You will find the other 11 below. You may like all 12 equally, but I don't.
-
^^ Well, I thinks some of those may be suffering from a lack of light - a bit grainy - but also the haze across the distant scene probably isn't helping in the low light either. A 900mm telephoto lens would likely run into similar problems.

2 views of tonight's sunset. I'm still looking, but running out of ones that aren't like those I have already shown. This one was interesting because of the orange shading into blue. The camera didn't capture that in the closer shots.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
The sunrise mountains were so bright and white this morning I wasn't sure anything would be seen in the shots. They can be(I think the camera processed the pictures so something could be seen). Definitely an example of High Dynamic Range, I think. Anyone want to disagree? They were taken around 6:20 AM here. My second page? Should I be celebrating?
-
^^ That's similar to your sunrise "Shadowed Mountains" shot, earlier. I guess lots of haze (humid air) makes for that kind of effect.
-
^^ That's similar to your sunrise "Shadowed Mountains" shot, earlier. I guess lots of haze (humid air) makes for that kind of effect.
-IainB
Entirely possible. We have had a lot of clouds recently(including now). I thought it was a light effect, but I guess humid air is a more likely answer. It still is an interesting picture. Thank you for your idea.
-
^^ Well, it would be a kinda "light effect". We naturally "see" things by their reflected light (except when looking at unnatural light-emitting sources, such as a video display, for example). The light from the low (rising) sun in this case is being bounced around haphazardly by reflection/refraction via the zillions of small drops of water (mist) which have condensed in the cold/dense early morning atmosphere. Some of that bounced light comes towards the viewer as just white light, partially obscuring the reflected light from the objects (mountains) behind the mist, like a natural veil. The effect dissipates as the air and moisture is warmed up by the sun, and the moisture evaporates.
At those times, depending on air temperature, there are different layers or thicknesses of such haze "veils" through which the reflected light from the mountains has to travel to get to your eye and the camera lens. The effect on the view of the mountains in your shots is quite beautiful, with the shy mountains furthest away being more demure and obscured (with a thicker veil) than those brazen wenches nearer (with a thinner veil). The white haze is like visual "noise". I've been inside that kind of haze/mist in freezing high alpine conditions, and the visual effect can sometimes be far from beautiful. When it is very dense, one literally cannot see anything - no reference point - so which way is up/down is unknown, because it is a visual "whiteout". Extremely disorientating - and potentially highly dangerous. A fog.
Similarly, a rainbow is a light effect when the sunlight gets refracted and split into its constituent colours (a prismatic effect) by the zillions of small drops of water in the atmosphere. The result is seen as a circular rainbow - per the sun - from an aircraft flying above, and as a partial circular rainbow from the ground.
If I have the time, I could happily watch the changing light on mountains all day long (preferably accompanied by a crate of beer and some BBQ meat). From experience though, sadly the best shots are usually those ephemeral ones captured by the senses - via the eyes - and photographs unfortunately tend to run a poor second to those. Which is a good reason for putting down the camera and just watching. Try telling that to Japanese tourists though...
But I do appreciate being able to view "your" mountains, from somewhere else halfway around the world.

The mountains are not burning now. The rain yesterday probably had a lot to do with that, so any haze or vapor here is probably just moisture from low clouds.

presuming they were taken about the same time: what was the difference when taking the pictures - i.e. how did you make one darker?
-
You do that by pointing the camera at a slightly different place. I do this until I get something I like to get a picture that looks like what I want to see. The camera tends to produce orange sunsets if you don't do this. See pictures in #30, #34 and #35 for examples.

No, I crop to remove the worst of the black background and then use MS Paint's Color Picker, Fill and Brush to hide any remaining black space. I don't use a tripod, the camera is quick enough to not need it. I didn't know ICE could fill in.

Does that method reduce the picture's resolution? The way I did it, it is still near-original. Is some detail lost when it went from 29.3 MB to 1.89 MB?

I may have posted an earlier panorama like this taken 01/12/14(maybe not, it was 17 MB in size). The mountains were less dimensional and the landscape was tilted, less zoomed. It was wider and more panoramic though.

Picky...picky...picky! You would criticize the Mona Lisa. ^Tomos, if you check out his site link you will find that his pictures are probably British(some French, some American there). I know where my pictures were taken.

:-) yes (and I started it)

I was really not trying to pick on you, Arizona Hot, I like your photo thread. But, yes, I like this Mona Lisa better:

I identify with @Curt's Mona Lisa image as being a rainbow, from Arizona.
So there it is.

Below is a link to an archive of rain rainbow pictures taken today of which ICE wouldn't complete the panorama. Serif Panorama+ and Autostitch also had that problem. I offer the original pictures to anyone who wants to try to manually stitch them. I couldn't try again for better pictures, it wasn't there when I came back. If that can't be done, forget about that and let us know about it. In this kind of situation in the future, I will get a lesser all-in-one picture for salvage purposes.

Sunset which doesn't need to be a panorama.
-

I don't know what happened to this sunset. Besides the stitching glitches, the clouds should be tilted and the base of the mountains should be straight.

A new sunset for a new page. The dark ground does make it look panoramic.

The panorama, as the contrast between the sky and the ground in the non-panorama is so high that the ground is only a blur to me

This is the sunrise on the morning before Halloween. I think the lights of Safford/Thatcher are interesting also. I didn't use Auto-complete with this panorama because it produced too many gray ghosts in the added area. Would these be appropriate in a pre-Halloween sunrise?
