Title: The Great MP3 Player Search
Post by: hamradio on November 28, 2006, 09:26 AM
Looking for an MP3 Player, that has a color screen, at least 2 GB of storage, fm radio, voice/fm record...acts like hard drive when you plug the usb into computer. Thats all I can think of for now.  :)

Is the color screen a must? I cant see much use for a color screen, but perhaps I am missing something.

How about something like a Sony Ericsson W800i with a 2 gig memory stick? Don't know if it'll record the fm radio though.

This one looks cool because it's just under a cubic inch in size and holds up to 2GB. It has radio fm/am and voice recording and plays MP3, WMA and WMA DRM. Connects to PC via USB and is just like a flash drive. You can store any kind of file on it.

Color screen, but only one color. :)

Personally, I favor the Creative lineup. Their sound quality is excellent.
I have a couple of Muvo models, including the 4GB version.

The ZEN V Plus seems almost to be what you're after (demo shows color screen, but I'm not sure about FM record).

I've recently bought one on ebay(.be) & it fits the description you're looking for:

http://cgi.benl.ebay.be/2-GB-MP3-MP4-LECTEUR-SUPERTHIN-RADIO-VIDEO-FOTO-2GB-NUE_W0QQitemZ230061846689QQihZ013QQcategoryZ88474QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The plus side is that it's pretty cheap. (I paid 68 €)
The downside is that you'll need other head-/earphones. The ones that get delivered with this player absolutely suck.

Oh, and it's a clone, no brand name. It looks like an Ipod Nano, but it does not have 'the wheel'

Also important, it uses a 2.5mm audio jack. Most earphones have a 3.5mm jack. So you'll probably need a converter, but those are cheap.

And it uses .amv to play video, which isn't a good format for that. But then again, this is something I'll never use. (actually, who does watch video's on such a small screen?)

Anyway, if you're looking for something cheap which fits your description, then this could be it.

Edit:
They also have 4 GB versions.

Sony's players are fantastic, but if they still use SonicStage software I wouldn't recommend - it's crap  :(

I like my Creative ZenMicro (not colour though but this model is discontinued anyway )- not sure about the newer models but mine has FM Radio - you can record the radio and also voice messages (there is a built in mic on top). Sound quality is good.

The biggest problem is that accessories don't seem to survive from generation to generation - I have a Zen Micro and had to buy a universal power adaptor as the one supplied was UK only and also a car charger. I also have a TravelDock Zen  (speakers) and various other bits and pieces. None of the extras are cheap and they won't work with the newly released MP3 players. I am thinking of buying a Zen MicroPhoto while I can still find them and put it into storage for when my Micro dies.

I think the peripheral problem is a growing one for all makes though - lots don't even supply power adaptors any more (eg. iPod Nano and new Creative players) as they expect you to charge up via the USB connector. Fine if you are near a computer but if you are travelling without one ....

Personally I think it is the old consumables for printers ripoff scam ... change the peripherals with each model so that when your player dies you have to start all over again.

Keep up with the recommendations although the search has ended as someone might find it useful.  The reason it has ended as I decided not to get a mp3 player right now since I still have Windows 2000 and most I liked needed Windows XP.  :)
