Title: Links page - suggestions wanted
Post by: mouser on March 23, 2005, 07:54 AM
I'm setting up a page of links to other sites, if you have any ideas for sections or pages please post.

keep in mind that like the reviews our aim here will be to keep this list minimalistic, listing only the very best few sites in each category.

wow the quantity of posts in that forum is incredible.. this looks like a nice site.

updated, added tech support guy forum, and added 2 of my favorite sites for home networking guides.

i think basically what our policy will be is to add sites on a provisional basis and if/when we find other sites that are clearly better than others, we can remove them.  that way we will always be listing a small number of the best sites, understanding that we may need to revise this list as we find out about new sites.

i've been adding sections as i think of them - if anyone has any suggestions of categories or links, please let me know.

For the Best Software Search Sites category, I recommend adding http://www.FileLight.com.

I have always received great help on Suggest a Fix (http://www.suggestafix.com/) regarding hardware issues, system and spyware problems, and HTML help.

thanks ann, tech guy looks great - added.
thanks zero-point, suggestafix also great - added.

z3k, filelight is one of best looking/organized shareware listing sites i've seen; i'll probably add it i just need to check out if it is up there with the rest in terms of quantity of listings since that is key.

Convert just about anything to just about anything else:
http://www.onlineconversion.com/

Learn stuff:
http://www.howstuffworks.com/

Free, absolutely no-nonsense temporary file hosting, up to 25-MB per file:
http://www.mytempdir.com/

Ordered ten different things from ten different vendors?  Keep track of them all for free in one place:
http://www.packtrack.com/

All sorts of easy-to-use, web-based networking facilities:
http://www.dnsstuff.com/

Easily scan a file with over a dozen anti-virus utilities at once:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Before you order that mainboard and hard drive...

thanks scott,
you gave me an idea about a section to add on best Ratings site.
i will add resellerratings (and epinions).

i'll check out the others too.
Title: Re: Links page - suggestions wanted
Post by: Scott on April 17, 2005, 08:11 PM
Damn, and I almost mentioned Epinions.com.  But then I thought about how full it seems (to me) to be of "career reviewers", rather than typical customers, just dropping their opinions...

I hope you'll consider my own site, THE GREAT SOFTWARE LIST (http://www.anova.org/software/), which has been recommending great software to users for eight years based on the following criteria:
__(1) Ease of use with a well-designed user interface;
__(2) A generous array of keyboard shortcuts (preferably customizable);
__(3) High degree of customizability where applicable; and
__(4) Affordability.

i've seen your site before and loved it!
it's a really great site and donationcoder.com is trying to do something similar in our reviews/awards as you have been doing for a long time.

anyone who hasn't seen the site go check it out and read the good information at the bottom of the main page.  i agree 100%.

great to have you here :)

going to add your page to the links page now, don't know how i overlooked it before.. i wonder if we need a new section for great sites like yours to put them in their own category?

ps.
hehe - i remember how i found your site, someone made a post scomewhere about the screenshots in your "image viewer page" :)

OnlineConversion.com is all by itself now in that category of Best Online Reference Sites/Tools..
we'll have to add some more links, like maybe some dictionary and encyclopedias..

http://www.m-w.com/

Online dictionary, thesaurus, and more.  Better than Dictionary.com IMO, because (for just one thing), it offers free audio pronunciations.  (Dictionary.com charges $20/year for its "premium" content.)

http://www.noaa.gov/

Free, authoritative weather forecasts and alert information (for the U.S. only, as far as I know).  A lot of other weather sites use NOAA data for their own sites.  If you pay federal taxes in the United States, you already pay for it, so you may as well use it, until the idiots in congress take it away to help the third-party weather sites compete.

http://www.mapquest.com/

Needs no explanation; there may be better ones, and probably not what you have in mind, but...

I'm sure someone will recommend http://www.wikipedia.org, though I'm not sure why.  The last time I made the mistake of using that waste of bandwidth, I saw a message at the top of the article that indicated the content was probably wrong, and needed review.  No credibility whatsoever.

wikipedia has some problems, which have been written about.
however it's an amazing idea, imho, and deserves encouragement and support.
Title: Re: Links page - suggestions wanted
Post by: mouser on May 08, 2005, 11:42 PM
thanks scott, i added those,

my general policy for the links page is that it is an evolving page -
so i'll add links within reason until someone suggests a better one for a given category, and remove links as we find better ones.

OK, I still don't get it though.  The premise is that incorrect information will eventually be corrected.  That doesn't help if you stop by before that happens.

well i don't know the nitty gritty details about wikipedia.. it would be nice if they had people check the info before making it public.
still, you have love the idea.

I love how the DCC links page has filled out. Here's three more for perusal that may lead to other links:

Great site for OS apps for Windows (The OSSwin Project)
http://osswin.sourceforge.net/ (http://osswin.sourceforge.net/)

Just the productivity OS apps, please (MozOO.org)

I hadn't used Google Maps (http://maps.google.com) before.  Now that I look at it, I fail to see any benefit of it.  Maybe it just isn't working correctly for me in Opera, but it doesn't seem to do much of anything!

http://nerdarts.com

Just found this site the other day after I linked to it from the boingboing guy who makes oil paintings of video games. He's created a new genre called the nerd arts, and he posts stuff there about machinima, chiptune, ludology, mashups, and recuts etc... Interesting site. Not exactly sure what section it would fit into, but still an interesting blog.

I have a few to add:

http://www.addall.com/ - THE best place to shop for books, music, movies, etc.  They just query many different sites and collate the data to figure out your best price...period.

You also seemed to have forgotten Gizmo's site - http://www.techsupportalert.com/

addall looks fantastic.  that deserves a post of its own steel, make one with a pic and i'll blog it.
regarding gizmo's site, well if that's not on the link page i better add it ASAP.

Random thoughts:
 - I think the 'Software Used on This Site' should have a page all to its self so you can better highlight the great software that helps drive DC. I know I use SMF because of DC.
- Isn't AnalogX pretty much a dead site?
- How about my freeware (http://www.veign.com/downloads.php) or some other online tools (http://www.veign.com/tools/) that are under the main site.
- Best Software Search site: http://Download.com or http://Softpedia.com
- Best Tech Support try http://ask-leo.com/
- Not sure where this would go http://www.namepros.com/ but its a great source for domain name information, buying, selling, trading.

Another suggestion is to fix the URL

This is its current page:
https://www.donationcoder.com/Links

I remembered that and typed this in:
https://www.donationcoder.com/links/

Which came up 404 (Linux server I assume).  Its more natural to type all in lower case URLs so you may want to make sure the lowercase version of the URL works too.

In addition to addall, I like fetchbook:
http://www.fetchbook.info/

And Zoho is turning out some great programs like Zoho Notebook in addition to their other offerings:
http://www.zoho.com/
some people like Zoho Notebook better than Google Notebook.

Media Convert , while an online converter, will convert some less known files:
http://www.media-convert.com/

I've found some answers to some fairly obscure technical questions here:
http://techrepublic.com.com/

This site is a good resource for rootkit information:
http://antirootkit.com/

This site has absolutely nothing to do with technology per se but its a great site anyway:
Kevin Kelly Cool Tools
http://www.kk.org/cooltools/

Two other favorites:

Of Zen and Computing
http://www.ofzenandcomputing.com/

Freeware Genius:

Two more that might be helpful:

Portable Apps:
http://portableapps.com/
Great list of apps you can carry around with you. Uses Open source, free.

I don't know if this blog fits in here, or not, but I find the most interesting things on it.
Really a great resource about a number of things.
Its called etc.

I agree with Veign about the (easy) URL and I also have a suggestion:

How about including a link to the page in the top menu, or if you think that it will be too cluttered, maybe it can be in the home page, on the left menu. Yesterday I've spent ages to locate this page.

You also seemed to have forgotten Gizmo's site - http://www.techsupportalert.com/
as a newsletter as well ?

Just had a look, great (links) page

re the hardware section
-
Steves Digicams is great site -
Another one I like a lot is Imaging Resource
http://www.imaging-resource.com/
If I was seriously researching cameras I would check out both  :-\

Would you consider adding online computer hardware stores for UK, Germany/Europe or others?
Cant recommend any personally! (Have used a few but still wouldnt know enough to highly recommend anywhere ... pixmania I used a few times - reasonable price & easy to order with fast delivery in my experience - they're based in France but deliver Europewide I think)
I'm sure there'd be loads of people able to recommend sites here  :)

How about "shopping" sites then -
(is that the correct term - preisvergleicher/price-comparer?)
e.g. http://www.schottenland.de/ seems to be the best hardware oriented one here in Germany with feedback re the sellers.

Have always been a vivid fan of Donationcoder.com and a donator. Using ScreenshotCaptor daily for my work since 2 years.

For a hobby I build Virtual Appliances (Linux as a guest) for the free VMware Player with MS Windows as a host. I have built some 30-40 Linux distros and I'm one of the most active contributors on the VMWare Appliances list. Presently more than 5000 Linux distros are downloaded monthly (abt. 4000 GB/month) the majority being Windows users wanting to try out Linux without having to use LiveCD's or dual-booting.

The site has been featured by ShellCity, LinuxQuestions.org and others.

All is for free of course.
