Title: Free Rice: Increase your vocabulary while you feed the hungry

Click on the answer that best defines the word.

If you get it right, you get a harder word. If wrong, you get an easier word.

For each word you get right, we donate 10 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program.

WARNING: This game may make you smarter. It may improve your speaking, writing, thinking, grades, job performance...

Corporate sponsors pay to have their ads shown. This money goes to buy the rice. You play the game and they make more money from the sponsors to buy more rice.

In the US CBS Nightly News told about it and I think it is overloaded right now as I cant get to it!

I was thinking, and so was my daughter, and after searching Google I have found that many others thought the same thing...

If we could all play till we have donated 1 bowl of rice every day, that would be a great thing and feed a lot of people.

But the question is...how many grains of rice are in an average bowl?

Not wanting to count, and knowing that the size of grains differ according to the type of rice, I did a search to see what the answer would be.

The believable answers I have found ranged from between 3000 to as high as 10,000.

So, I think I will go with the lower number so I can still have a life, too, and just play till I hit 3000 grains each day, if I can. That's still a lot of playing though.  :o

hehehe ive told 2 people about this so far, and they are both already addicted  ;)  good idea it is, i hope they get enough sponsors to actually provide the rice

They seem to have some big name corporate sponsors, so I am pretty sure they are going to come up with the money.

Nobody has mentioned the vocab level that they managed to reach / maintain - perhaps this is a taboo area as it could be condoned as showing off or being elitist.

I have always liked words, sometimes play word-games, do crosswords, and am a writer - I achieved vocab level 42, but couldn't maintain it for more than a few words at a time.

Plus had lots of fun, and gave away some rice!

I got that 42 level as well, but plummeted after a while to 36, and couldn't get higher than 38 afterwards. The only thing that bugs me about the game is that it seems to have a limited amount of words for you to define, and they get repeated after some time playing, but it was a couple of weeks since I played, so it could have go for the better in that area.

I get up to 43 once (briefly)
seem to be able to hold 42 for a while though

I have a friend who reads a lot
(and says that when growing up her family used a lot of archaic words)
she reached 46 - and stayed there a while too  :up:
have to ask her can she remember any of the words -
I didnt recognise a lot of them & was working on on educated/intuitive guess's
(is it a noun or a...)

I seem to average between 37 & 40.

I think the repetition of words is a good thing, considering that would encourage you to remember them, and maybe even begin using them. That is part of it's educational vocabulary building value.
