I mean like a service, a business, etc

I think it's the ideas that will change society - the services and businesses will follow.

PS a big  to Tao's suggestion

I don't think an idea by itself has much effect.  It's not only what is said but who said it.

I suspect during the 50s and 60s in an effort to impress certain advice on people, many quotes were attributed to Albert Einstein.  It stands to reason that if other geniuses, like Woody Allen or Yogi Berra, only produced a dozen or fewer really pithy sayings, it's not likely Einstein uttered all that stuff under his name.  The name was synonymous with genius in those years.  That was promoted and exploited.

As a simple example, somebody came up with the idea to paint the word Ambulance backwards on the front of same so that drivers would see it the right way around in their rear view mirrors.  Why you would need the word when a speeding vehicle with flashing lights is behind you I don't know.  But I know if I thought of doing that everyone would say what a really stupid idea it was and not paint any ambulances as described.

Perhaps the person had an automotive painting business?

Idea: Have devices in emergency vehicles that can change red traffic lights to green... for the direction they are headed or the lane they are in.

@MilesAhead
Woody and Yogi are a couple of my favorites.  So are Buzz and Boo Boo.   ;D

The therapeutic value of dark humor:

Why you would need the word when a speeding vehicle with flashing lights is behind you I don't know.

I have had a seriously fucked up day, but that darkly keen observation actually made me laugh for the first time today.

Thank you.

Maybe, but without modern recording tech, it's hard to know.

Some bright people also had talents for just reeling off thoughtful two liner aphorisms like a riverboat dealer with nine people at the table. Ralph Waldo Emerson is the quickest to come to my mind, maybe Mark Twain as well, as two of the "older generation".

Some cities might already have these. I think I even remember seeing one - there's a special little strange light that can flash on top of the stoplight when the override flashes. I really think I recall seeing one in action once even years ago, where all four of the regular directions were red, to reduce the mental load on the driver.

It's already been done. See here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_signal_preemption).

No such thing. Ideas are a dime a dozen. Implementation is what changes the world.

Now all i have to do is live long enough to see the local implementation.   ;D

In the meantime i think i'll get one of those LED middle-finger-salutes and stick it in my back-window.
For the next asshole ambulance that stops behind me at a clogged red light.

Just make sure they don't have a dashcam if you do. ;D Their word against yours that you had no way to get out of theirs.

Two guesses who will win that debate,  :o ;)

Sometimes i'm at the front of the clog and i'll just creep out slowly, waiting for the cross traffic to notice.  The danger is the oblivious McMuffin stuffing, Cell Phone talking, gas guzzling T-bone traffic.  The finger is for times when i'm 6 or 8 cars back (the norm) and the EMS is melting my license plate.  No worries.   :)

^I hear ya!  ;D I too have inched into an intersection to let an ambulance get by and have almost been hit a few times since the idiots in the ongoing lane didn't notice the ambulance - with blazing lights and siren - right behind me. The level of 'DUH' some people succumb to when driving never ceases to amaze me.

Idea:  Invent a cell-phone-signal-blocker for a sunvisor or dashboard.  Maybe with a 10 yard radius.

This could save some lives, help prevent some road-rage and make people pull off the road to talk.   :)

You're talking about a jammer. :) They exist, but are usually illegal.

As an alternative, I suppose that cars could be manufactured as Faraday cars. :)

That's only if you do it wrong..

Harley Davidson Signal Jammer:

The above Harley Davidson Shovelhead is in a Jammer frame, and (with the open exhaust) Drag Pipes will at 3,000rpm effectively "jam" all (voice) radio communications in a roughly 3 block radius. You just gotta trust me on this one man, I used to piss myself laughing doing this in traffic for years. Now the new bike is too quiet...but I'm debating on "fixing" that up just a bit..

Only if you can convince the FCC it's designed for some other purpose, which pretty much means you can't advertise it as a feature.

I seem to recall some movie theater owners trying to get the FCC to let them put Faraday cages in several years back. That worked out about the way you'd expect considering there are almost always wireless carrier insiders on the commission.

Back in the mid 60s people were using gate-valves on their cars.  Between the engine and the muffler.
Open = loud, obnoxious - close = regular, lawful.   Ahhhh the 60s ... good times.   :)

Idea: Have devices in emergency vehicles that can change red traffic lights to green... for the direction they are headed or the lane they are in.

Already exists, and gets used more often than not.

While the normal flashing lights do get noticed, in areas with a lot of traffic sometimes there is no way to clear a path for oncoming emergency vehicles.

Triggering the light to change in advance allows that traffic to get moving again so it can clear the way for the emergency vehicle.

Idea:  Invent a cell-phone-signal-blocker for a sunvisor or dashboard.  Maybe with a 10 yard radius.

Been done. It plugs into the car, and interacts with a software feature in the phone to disable most of the phone's functionality. Currently it is being marketted towards parents of teen and young adult drivers, and includes features like speed and location monitoring so that not only does it disallow cellphone use while driving but it also makes sure that a young driver is driving safely.

Check this out. It even comes with an insurance discount. https://www.esurance.com/drive-safe

This doesn't actually jam the signals, it simply uses bluetooth to communicate with app on the phone to disable sections of the phone's functionality.

Pretty much if you can think of it, someone has already made a product of it. And if not, you shouldn't talk about it online. Instead you should quietly develop and market a product and make a fortune from it.

Idea:  Start facing a few facts.

1.  Fossel fuels are non renewable.
2.  Humans cannot survive in outer space for extended periods.
3.  There is no such thing as rehab.

Three is a blanket statement.  I broke my own rule.  Though it depends on ones point of view.  So...

3.  Rehab is in the mind of the beholder.

^Definitely not "more fun." If it just starts turning into a slag/counter-slag thread, most of us here will simply ignore it and move on to some real discussions. Tit-for-tat and back & forth gab fests can be found anywhere. What goes on here in our forum is rather unique.

Idea:  Create an Operating System that stays loaded.  One that does not have to load each time you turn on your machine.  Instant-On.

Not sure if this would be OS or computer related though.  Both maybe?

Edit:  Old tech... but news to me.  :-[
