Title: doPDF (pdf creator) - Freeware
Post by: Softland on February 23, 2007, 03:02 AM
We've recently released a freeware pdf creator called doPDF (http://www.dopdf.com). Has pretty basic features but it's one of the few pdf creators that doesn't use Ghostscript and that runs on Vista.

doPDF allows you to freely convert documents to PDF files, including emails, MS Office documents, web pages, text. It works as a printer driver and you can convert to PDF from any Windows application that supports printing - just set doPDF as the default printer and the document will be converted and saved as PDF file. Features include: customizable resolution, predefined page size, quality settings and much more.

Just tested it. it leaves the document in the printer queue, nothing happens.
This is the second time for me that a program from this company just does doesn't work out of the box. A pity, it looks good.

Hi, can you send an email to info[at]dopdf[dot]com with more details about this error? Basically the operating system used and the application you printed from. Thank you.

On my system, doPDF works fine.  The only glitch I found is when one look at the properties of the pdf file created by doPDF, the main fields are filled with strange characters, whereas one would have expected some info about Softland.

Can you post a screenshot? I have attached one and there are no strange characters.

Will do so ASAP, that is as soon I have access to the PC where it is installed and where I have observed it, basically next week.  Just a precision also : I am using FoxReader as pdf reader.

Hi. No need to send that file, seems this is a bug in Foxit. Adobe reader gets the correct information, while Foxit doesn't. I'll send them an email about this. Thanks for pointing it.
[update] Seems they already know about this bug http://www.foxitsoftware.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=845

OK !  Thanks for the precision.  I was thinking it was doPDF fault since using another pdf creation tool, cutePDF (latest release), the properties were OK, even with Foxit Reader.

hi there Softland, been trying out doPDF as an alternative PDF creator and i'm surprised that doPDf creates smaller & searchable PDFs.. :)

however i'm having some problems that i would like to highlight..
• 1st, after saving and the file is displayed, the extension goes missing. this happens despite typing-in the ".pdf" at the save dialog.
• 2nd, if the typed filename contains a dot or hyphen, the filename gets cut-off. e.g. "my.work.2006.pdf" is saved as on "my".
• 3rd, at the save dialog if i type-in the name of an existing file, doPDF promptly overwrites the file without any warning!

i hope you will look into this in your future releases. i also would like to suggest that make doPDF be able to remember the last saved folder, instead of prompting to save into "My Documents" each time.. :)

1 - is a bug we are aware about, will be fixed in vs 5.1
2 - same bug as 1
3 -  bug, will be fixed
in vs 5.1 the last save location will be remembered. Don't know exactly the release date but it will not be too long.

This looks like my new PDF Printer! I used to use PDFCreator (http://www.pdfforge.org/products/pdfcreator/) but I don't want to have to do a bunch of weird stuff to make it work on Vista. Thanks Softland!

New in version 5.3:
Optimized the text compression algorithm so now the size of PDF files is reduced by up to 80% (for PDFs consisting mainly of text), Finnish and Arabic user interface localizations added

Hi guys,

Does doPDF preserve URL links in documents?  :tellme:
Title: Re: doPDF (pdf creator) - Freeware
Post by: Curt on July 04, 2008, 08:19 PM
- yes, links are clickable:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

- from Danish:
"The program is trying to launch the homepage Http-and-so-on-pdf.exe. Do you trust this homepage?"

doPDF is now version 6.1 and is still lightweight and fast. One strange feature is that there are no settings to do, except for favourite folder. The only contact is when you have to choose if you want to keep the suggested filename (and fav folder), otherwise you cannot get in contact with this program. After the creation of a PDF the program will automatically send the file to your viewer, which is why I am removing doPDF again. I cannot accept this feature to be the only option.

Another thing to name is that doPDF does not try to hide that it 'merely' is an advert for novaPDF (http://www.novapdf.com/):

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

But doPDF is gratis, fast, and with fine print quality.

check this thread (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=6549.0) for a free copy of NovaPDF Lite, credits to Patteo. i haven't checked but the download may still work as vunet normally won't remove the offered downloads immediately.

Hi Curt,

Unless I am doing something wrong but my doPDF does not preserve hyperlink. It does have link for some like "http://google.com" but not when you make your own word or sentence then create hyperlink.

Thanks

Immediately??? ;D - it's November 2006
Nova still give the registration info (needed as well as the download), but the download no longer works, although the page is there.

- vnunet also states that "This download offer will be taken offline on or around 24th of December 2006", so ...

@ Kuntau
I am not all sure in which situation it is you are having a problem with this feature - my links are clickable. Maybe it is a problem caused by the viewer you are using? I am using the free version of PDF X-Change Viewer. Or were they maybe internal links, or marked as 'hidden links'? Also, the program in which you are creating the link must support clickable linking as well. So could the problem be that you are using the "wrong" editor?

---

I have decided to keep on trying doPDF a little longer.

@Curt

I write the document in MS Word, highlight some work + ctrl+k --> put in URL then print to pdf with doPDF... I am not sure about hidden link, how do I check so?
Title: Re: doPDF (pdf creator) - Freeware

@Kuntau
Your problem is confusing me and I don't know what to tell you, but I just made a normal .doc in Word 2003, typed an imaginary link and X-Change Viewer is opening it without any problems. MS Word can offer you to "unlinkify" URLs, convert to plain text, but to my (lack of) understanding links can also be hidden by your clipboard, "remove formats / paste as plain text", or something. I really don't understand why it isn't working for you. Sorry.

.. in MS Word, highlight some work + ctrl+k --> put in URL ...

Ohh... I am soo slow today. "Insert URL", you said. You are right; Word is actually hiding the link. This problem is caused by Word, not by the printer. As far as I (don't) know these kinds of invisible links can only be read by text editors and Internet browsers.

... but if the pdf was created using Acrobat then AFAIK we can put link like that? Any other software can do like that other that Adobe Acrobat pro?

Nova still give the registration info (needed as well as the download), but the download no longer works, although the page is there.

i just checked the email containing the reg key and i noticed that the date was August 2007. which means i had downloaded well over 9 months after the original post but expecting it to be available after another year is a bit of a stretch. anyway, it's worth a try, being free & all. ;)

They can? So it really is caused by the printer. That is too bad, I think, because I just wasted $30 then - only ten minutes ago I purchased novaPDF PRO, and it cannot do it, either. Hmm... there is always some more to learn. But okay, there is a long distance between the asking prices for novaPDF and Acrobat.

Edited:
Visagesoft eXpert PDF Creator cannot do it, either.

That's for the registration - which does get the key. But the prog download from VNU does not work - and the key does not work with other versions of Lite.

It seems CABAReT Stage Home (http://www.cabaret-solutions.com/en/products/stage/bundle_home/) can do it for free:

v.7 released

Works really good.
I made a video to show how it will print a web page with the right page breaks.
Plus I get a chance to get novaPdf 7 Pro by posting this on you tube.

-but what went wrong? Your video "stopped" for 1½ minute, (the video was still running but nothing was happening), before the printing. It took me approx 10 seconds to print the same (6) page(s) to pdf and open the file in a reader.

doPdf's end result is fine.

I paused doing anything to watch the print monitor.
Maybe that was it. Notice I put up the the print que for observing it as well.
Just to see that it was actually processing the file.
