The provisioning of our new official servers is now complete!!!
I will post much more about the process, the company chosen to be our hosting provider, the specs of the new servers, in the next couple of days.
(We will have a fundraiser later this year to pay for it!)
I am extremely excited about the entire process -- the main site upgrade to a proper CMS, the new servers, the new member server setup, etc.
The new server is a huge upgrade over our current one.
We will be migrating to the new servers in the coming week or two.. I will post more details as it is about to happen, but you can expect some hiccups as we change over, and the site may be unreachable for a day or so as the DNS propagation happens.
Stay tuned!!

I'm propagating nameservers to cloudflare in preparation for the server changeover -- let me know if you have any trouble connecting to donationcoder.com..

Mouser was super excited to have finally made the decision on which hosting company to go for XD

I've been working hard on configuring the new servers for the last week solid.. It's alternately satisfying and frustrating.. Always more work and more complications than one expects.. And always some hiccups when moving to a new host after 10 years at the same place.
But we are very close to being able to go live, and having a much cleaner, secure, and maintainable home..
-
And Mexico will pay for it!

Waycist.

The new servers are set up, configured, tested, and ready to host DC.
I have copied all content and data to the new servers, the only thing that remains is some final tweaking and then shutting down the forum here and updating the new server forum database to sync the very latest posts. And then fixing any bugs and oddities that show up.
Due to the use of the cloudflare dns proxy, the switchover between servers should be fairly smooth, without the ~24hr dns-propagation delays we have suffered from in the past.
So.. Hold onto your hats, any day now you will see the forum get locked down and then re-appear on its new home, along with the new version of the website.

I spent all of today trying to move over the server and failed -- there were issues that seemed to be related to database encoding that I could not get fixed.
I will try again later this week. Thank you for your patience.
-
Database encoding issues are very familiar to me, have spent too many hours on that :(
-
I have solved the problem. Only took 6 hours of screaming at the screen.
I will re-perform the server move tomorrow morning, same procedure, forum will shutdown while i migrate the very latest copy of the database.
-
Good luck!

Good luck

And here we go..

It seems that hard work, and probably a bit of luck, gave us back our favorite site. Yay :-*

:D
If you find any issues, please post them here: https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=44950.msg416235#msg416235

Do we have a new favicon? In my memory it was more blueish, but now it's more green/yellowish. I think I (still) like it :)
The ssl 'lock' on my Firefox is 'complaining' that some parts of the site aren't secure, like images (browser UI talks Dutch to me, so I'm sort of translating on the fly), some configuration issue? I seem to remember that after the last server move there was something similar, and mouser fixed it pretty quick, AFAIR.
Edit: It has to do with some of the smileys: http :// www .donationcoder.com/forum/esmileys/gen3/3Smileys/greenclp.gif (and others)

Indeed! ...A true professional would maintain a steady cadence of profanity in a blended cross between magical incantation and mantra. It's all part of the process and greatly assists in focusing ones rage (er...) energy towards guiding the hammer blows to their best effect.
:-\ At least that what I tell the wife.. :D

Would folks be interested in a long rambling post about the migration of the dc server(s), the move to content management systems, and all of the options I considered and why each decision was made?
-
Well, no, not a "long rambling post", which could mean a chunk of your otherwise productive time, but a brief summary report that simply covered:
- Objectives.
- Implementation Plan.
- Resources required.
- Actual Implementation Steps, and variations to plan - in timeline order (or order of occurrence).
- Outcomes.
- could be interesting, but only if the report could also be useful to yourself as a sort of diary note.
In fact, if you already had diary notes about the implementation, then you could construct the summary report from those notes. This is something I often do for myself, so that I can go back and review something I did in the past. My notes nowadays are invariably documented very nicely in MS OneNote, and I can put them up in a public share, rather than send them out as a file or put them up as a document on a website. Blogging the summary in a blog or a forum post would be a relatively tedious exercise - the medium being very limited by comparison to a document, which latter is more suited to being indexed, well-structured with a self-contained TOC, diagrams, etc. and thus more easily read as a report.

Another yes
-
No but I'm prepared to be bored for the sake of DC ;D
And, again, thanks for all the work you put into it.
