Title: BeyondCompare 3 Released
Post by: Darwin on July 31, 2008, 09:40 AM
Noticed this this morning - Scooter Software have finally released BeyondCompare 3 (http://www.scootersoftware.com/home.php)! I say "finally" because when I bought version 2 three years ago, version 3 was supposed to be being released before the end of the year (2005)... Thus, this is a long awaited update!

Now it's available for the Mac too, one less reason to stick with windows.

Heh, heh - I seem to have lost all of the relevant e-mails regarding my BC 2 purchase (Outlook 1, Darwin 0) :o I was assured at the time that buying version 2 would qualify me for a free upgrade to version 3 when released (as noted above, it was to be imminently released)... I also took advantage of the DC discount when I purchased but I can prove none of it  :(

No worries, really. I am happy with version 2.

Still, fingers crossed, eh?

Edit: added Tuckndar's comment for clarity - justice and I posted simultaneously.

The lines are definitely blurring. I like to think I'd go Linux when I venture out of the MS nest, though...

You'de think they would at least send out an email to registered users of version 2. Maybe they are just too embarassed to ask us to pay for our "free" upgrade.  ;)

According to their website, if you bought your BC2 license after 1/1/2007, you can get a free updated by filling out the form at: http://www.scootersoftware.com/shop.php?zz=req_freeupgrade

I bought my copy in August 2005...

tinjaw - they didn't even send out a notice to beta testers.

I was lucky enough to win a license for BC2 the month after I joined up at DC.   Thank you again mouser

Even though I effectively obtained the program free, Scooter Software were still good enough to offer me a $15 upgrade discount.....and then I couldn't decide whether to get the Standard or Pro version of BC3.

Ended up with the Pro version and I'm glad I did since I've been using the Alignment Override a fair bit recently, (although I thought I'd mainly get the Pro for the merging facility).

BTW, in case you don't know there was a recent update to BC2 (http://www.scootersoftware.com/download.php?zz=dl2_en).

I have to say Scooter software has one of the most generous trials for their software I've come across. You could use BC2 for 30 days, but it only counts days that you actually started the program. So even though I've used it quite a lot I still have days left and I will certainly demo BC3 and try and get it bought at work.

Can you use BC2 sessions in BC3 or will I lose my sessions?

And, if you use Windows and Linux, I assume that you can effectively extend the trial to 60 days.

Haven't tried the prog at all yet, but I probably will. Does look rather expensive for the amount of use I would get from it though - unless there is a big discount, of course (I did notice the price looking very reasonable for 100+ users; a DC members discount would produce 100+ new users, no?)

Hey Guys,

I'm glad to see the positive reactions. :)  Just to clarify/answer a few things:

1) BC3 is not available for the Mac;  just Windows and Linux right now.

2) If you purchased using DonationCoder's discount our records should show it.  Our free upgrade window has always been 12-18 months, and when Mouser wrote his review we expected to hit that window.  We decided to take more time to polish it and add extra features instead.  If you think you deserve a free upgrade anyway, just email sales and I'm sure they can help you out.

3) We haven't made a big mailing about the official release yet because we already have plenty of support, sales, and upgrade requests to keep us busy.  I think the plan is to email the full list in a couple of weeks once the initial rush dies down a bit.  We did mention v3 the 2.5.3 announcement email, and emailed the beta list a few months ago.

4) BC2 sessions and most settings can be imported into BC3.  The only thing that can't be converted automatically is custom comparison rules (unimportant text, etc), due to changes in the way those are handled.

I'm very tempted to just purchase this right away (I still have many days left of my evaluation period...) so I'm wondering if I purchase this today then a DC disount is available soon, would it be possible to be refunded the discount savings?

probably not the best place to ask, but I take it other DC users would be interested as well

unlikely -- companies don't generally do this.

40% discount on Beyond Compare
Well done!

I hope it works out to everyone's satisfaction, users and vendor.

It's not something I really need but at that price I'll buy a copy anyway.
I'm happy and the vendor has a modest sale that might have been a zero.
If enough people climb aboard...

Again, thanks for your effort.

Our massive review of version 2 is here: https://www.donationcoder.com/Reviews/Archive/CompareTools/index.html

I'm a *HUGE* fan of BeyondCompare -- i use it constantly, and LOVE it.

Also: Everyone should try the free open source WinMerge and (if you have lots of bucks) Araxis Merge, the other two main competitors mentioned in that review.

Any chance the DC discount can be used together with the upgrade discount?

Not that it'll affect my decision to buy, but the version I want (dual-system pro) is so expensive that every bit of discount helps.

My guess is that you can use either the upgrade discount or the DC discount, but not both.  I'll verify with Scooter Software.

4) BC2 sessions and most settings can be imported into BC3.
-Craig (Scooter) (August 01, 2008, 02:18 PM)

to specify:
BC3 doesn't "replace" BC2, because BC3 installs to \Beyond Compare 3\
so you will just have to export from BC2, when BC3 is installed.

Hm, with the discount, pro version seems to be quite managable fund-wise... might just go for it, 3-way merge sounds like a cute thing to have when there's multiple developers on a project.

I was wondering much the same thing... I unintalled v.2 before upgrading and expected the shell features to be installed. Nope, and I can't find an option anywhere, either! So, er, I'd be interested in the answer as well...

i know the betas of beyond compare 3 had shell extension context menu just like v2 (even on winx64!) so maybe its just in options somewhere.. or am i not understanding what you are asking for.

Hm, I registered+installed BC3, but the shell extensions are for BC2. Both in 64bit explorer and 32bit explorer^2... going to uninstall BC2 and have a look-see if this can be fixed.

Are you talking about the explorer context menu getting the "Select left side to compare..." and "Compare to xyz" items?

If so, go in the BC3 Options panel in the Startup category.  There's an "Explorer integration" area in the bottom half.

 :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

Just checked - it's all there already... My fault for having so many context menu items installed that I couldn't see the tree for the forest... Or is that the forest for the trees? If a tree falls in a forest of context menu entries, does it make a noise?
Title: Re: BeyondCompare 3 Released
Post by: Carol Haynes on August 07, 2008, 07:17 PM
Thanks - I added the options in submenu (originally they were in main menu) and now they appear. Maybe there is a conflict with BC2 in the explorer main menu options because before I shifted BC3 explorer options to a submenu they didn't appear at all ???
Title: Re: BeyondCompare 3 Released
Post by: mwb1100 on August 07, 2008, 07:34 PM
I should have mentioned that when I first tried the explorer integration BC2 started up, but I went into the options and fiddled around (turned them off then back on or something), then the explorer menus opened up BC3.

I suppose that the install doesn't override the existing shell registration (this might or might not be intentional or a bug), but hitting OK in the options dialog forces the issue.
Title: Re: BeyondCompare 3 Released
Post by: f0dder on August 08, 2008, 07:52 AM
After uninstalling BC2, a lot of files were still left behind. I dropped to a cmd.exe shell to delete them (can't delete files used by active shell extensions with explorer :)), and after I nuked those last traces, it was finally BC3 that was responsible for the "Select left file for compare" etc. shell context menus

Glad to see the BC3 discussion and discount. BC has been high on my most-useful shortlist since version 1, and BC3 Pro adds so much to older versions that it's a no-brainer must-have, especially for file management, remote and local backup, and text/source management. I also use its data (e.g. CSV) comparison module, which lags significantly behind folder and text comparison in power and friendliness but is still invaluable at times.

I was on the fence about upgrading to v3 just for the in-pane editor (even if we are only talking $15).

But combine it with the DC discount and the resultant $9 upgrade fee somehow crosses that magical mental threshold from a discretionary purchase to a must have!  :)

Many thanks to Scooter Software and DC for putting this offer together.
