Title: Aston Shell - Free today at GAOTD
Post by: sri on September 21, 2007, 03:55 AM
Aston Shell is a flexible and powerful Desktop replacement application, which lets you save your computer’s resources while giving your Desktop a unique look. Aston completely replaces your old Desktop with a new one, providing numerous additional features and saving computer resources for more necessary tasks.

Does anyone use this? How does it affect computer performance? Can we undo the changes it does easily and go back to regular windows shell?

Haven't tried this particular shell, however I use LiteStep and I've also had good experiences with bblean.

It's hard to notice any significant difference in computer performance these days, since I have a decent system, but before, on an older system, an alternative shell definitely was lighter on the resources for me. The changes should be easily reversed, at least they are with LiteStep (which is Open Source), and so I suppose a commercial product like AstonShell will be just as easy as uninstalling any software.

I'd be interested in knowing if anyone here have tried AstonShell too. Not that'd even consider switching, since LiteStep is free and Aston isn't (well except today that is) and I've grown to accustomed to the freedom of LiteStep. LS might be a bit hard to get going (text based configuration), but I certainly think it's worth it

I hesitate to use anything for my shell that I don't actually have the software for... you get used to it and then when you have to nuke XP, you can't reinstall it.

- so, sri, did you try it?

I did, but I was so disappointed with the lack of tooltips on the Aston desktop, that I logged off, and went back to XP's Explorer right away. But at least that is how easy it is to swift forth and back.

I only DLed it, but didn't try.

I was not sure if powerPro, which I am reading the documentation of currently, will work w/ alternate shells.
