Title: Contest - Make a new Banner for Website
Post by: mouser on March 15, 2006, 01:12 PM
BrotherS and CarolH both have suggested that what with the forum upgrade, we really need to revamp the banner at the top of the website pages and forum page.

both are designed as  a pair with a main image and a sidebar that can extend as far as it needs to go.
i think the sizes are pretty good so we should probably keep to them.

I'm attaching current versions to end of this post.

Note you need to design it without the "a new kind of website" text - since we want to change that and may want to change it dynamically or per page.

Actually i was thinking of a new slogan for the site: "A Place for Lovers of Software" or something like that.

NEW: DOWNLOAD A SAMPLE FILE SET TO TEST YOUR IMAGE IN HTML PAGE:
https://www.donationcoder.com/Contests/banner/

DEADLINE
The contest does not have a hard deadline - we will end it when we get a design so good that it demands ending it.
However, it will not end before May 1st, so any entry prior to that will be considered.

Prizes..
hmm... not sure, free donationcoder.com shirt or mug from http://www.cafepress.com/donationcoder
plus a usb 4x5" drawing pad if you want it, or else some other free software

Please submit files in exactly this dimension, file format (png), and file names.  And you need to provide BOTH a forum pair and website pair of images.

Whoa.. First forum redesign, now banners changin, things really are evolving here!
I support this idea, only wish i knew how to do these kind of things. But I'm sure someone will come up with some great banner for we all to admire! :D

Actually i was thinking of a new slogan for the site: "A Place for Lovers of Software" or something like that.
I also think that slogan could be changed, maybe a new thread could be opened for that?

Actually i was thinking of a new slogan for the site: "A Place for Lovers of Software" or something like that.

 ;D :-* I don't know, man!  Lovers?  That's funny.  Sounds like some kind of fetish.  How about this:
"For Those Who Get Hard For Software".

(I hope that doesn't violate dc policy!)

how about "connoisseurs of fine software"

The problem here, is the usual problem i have when someone asks me "what is donationcoder.com?".
I never know what to say, I answer "well... it's the best website i know!" ;)
I sense finding an apropriate slogan will be a hard task..

Why is it after only five minutes the whole thing gets gloomy?  Maybe I need to drink more coffee before attempting anything -- or maybe throwing in the towel in advance would be a good move. :)

what about: "A Home for Software Fanatics"

or "A Home for Software Festishists" (probably truer ... now where's that digital whip?)

or "Great Software at YOUR OWN price"

or "A Great Software Community ... Prices? ... Name them!!"

or "A Community Software Project"

When will this contest end?
the general trend on this site has been a bit informal - no fixed date set, but when we find a new one that is a consensus winner, we end it.

but probably makes sense to have a date before which we promise the contest won't end.  Let's say April 1 at the very earliest.  Probably more like May 1.

addendum: somewhere in the banner should be a place where we can overlay the title of the current page.
an example from our current design:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

also note that cody likes to perch at the lower right of the banner so it should look good with him there..

ps.
im going to upload a sample html page for forum and site banners for you to try out your designs with, to see how they will actually look on the website.

And don't just focus on the 'bullet holes' layout, feel free to add something completely different :)

I like ToxMox' latest version best, also slave138' idea of putting some emphasis to "DC" (marking the D and the C)!
Title: Re: Contest - Make a new Banner for Website
Post by: nudone on April 06, 2006, 02:39 AM
well, i still like the clouds and the sunny letters theme. it's the most positive banner we've had so far - maybe it doesn't match perfectly with the rest of the forum colour scheme but maybe it doesn't have to.

the majority of the other banners have seemed rather cold and uninviting so far - am i reading too much into all of this?

I personally like the 101$0010$11010$10$110. I see the 'binary' pattern so many different places I tune it out. The dollar signs aren't immediately aparrent to me.

To me, a good logo can't have a standard font in it. The letters have to look more like they were sculpted than made with cookie cutters.
...
I guess the only letters that actually repeat are "o" and "n," so it probably wouldn't be too hard to 'tweek' those letters for the final version.

Just my two cents...

i should point out, as i've done on a separate thread, that the banner you see now on the pages is not the final banner chosen as our new banner - we are just testing out different banners and no final decision has been made.

we're going to be trying out some of toxmox's soon too :)

I really love the rounded, 3-D effect of ToxMox's font for DonationCoder, but am not sure the font in "for software connoisseurs" is a suitable companion.  The font used by hamradio for those words is no better because it is hard to read.  Can you try out others?

The clouds used by ToxMox seem a bit stormy to me, even in the lighter version.  I prefer the ones in hamradio's example; it feels like they are much higher in the sky, more "atmospheric."  Also, they really work out nicely in the forum banner.

So...would love to see ToxMox's DonationCoder on hamradio's clouds -- and to see other examples of "for software connoisseurs."

I'm digging the slave138b forum (https://www.donationcoder.com/Contests/banner/slave138b/fullforumindex.html) bar, but not so much the quadrilateral's (no offense).

On another note, whichever banner is chosen, I think that at least the text part should be hot-linked to the main page (a la Slashdot (http://slashdot.org/)).  It's a nice big target and I find myself constantly clicking it.   ;D  Additionally, perhaps the Forum banner could link to main forum page--might make navigating easier.   :-\

No offense taken.  I was mostly just toying around with a program I had just installed (Inkscape).  I'm working on another right now because I just don't like all the clouds.  They come off a little too 'foofy' for my tastes (no offense to anyone else).

I know it's a bit late, but... "connoisseurs" is a bad word. It's pretty hard to spell :), and I bet people who are less fluent in English (and french) will have trouble understanding it...

it's a bit of a chance using "connoisseurs", but it's a very neat word and given its roots i wonder if it isnt more understood than one might think.

as for spelling, i can't disagree with you there - its impossible to spell.  but then who has to spell it?

Back to the word "connoisseur:  For my money, ;) the word is absolutely perfect, and I hope we can stick with it.  It's French and easily found in any dictionary, with the Italian equivalent cognoscenti.

When I read the definition from the Oxford English Dictionary, it seems to perfectly fit persons who are drawn to donationcoder.com:  "a person who knows a lot about and enjoys one of the arts, or food, drink, etc. and can judge quality and skill in that subject."

If it seems to be a problem, how about a link to the definition -- and a cute pronunciation guide.  See

True. Connoisseur while being a hard word to spell, is a good description. What i don't like is the "for". Because that would seem to limit the users to "software Connoisseurs".

Okay, here's the best I can do.
http://www.infoplease.com/audio/pron/connoisseur.wav
and
http://library.sullivan.edu/CPI/audio/connoisseur.wav

The first is the best approximation of the way I have usually heard it pronounced.  The second, of course, is by a French speaker and illustrates that the actual French spelling is "connaisseur," not "connoisseur."  The spelling we are using was apparently borrowed by the English in the 1800s.  Go figure.

. . . and I hate the nasal bordering on anal French pronounciation.  Call me throaty American. :) It's ironic I live minutes south of French Canada and nearly everyone here speaks French as a first or strong second language.

Is it just me or does the French version sound like someone trying to sound French?

I also am very fond of toxmox latest site banner  :Thmbsup:

I like Mr Globe - show that DC has world domination as its aim ...

Now all we need is Mouser, represented by Blowfeld

(http://www.jamesbondmm.co.uk/images/bond-villains/thumbnails/large-med/dp_large.jpg) Mouser

any volunteers for the post of 007?

No I am not volunteering to be Pussy Galore

And here (http://www.jamesbondmm.co.uk/win-an-aston-martin.php) is the next DC competition

I agree, I don't like the "for" either. It kind of makes it seem like DC is an organization put together to serve software connoiseurs, not an organization comprised of software connoiseurs.

Nice! A spoiler button that reveals a link to a website with a spoiler...

The Simpsons spoofed that episode of the Twilite Zone in their first Halloween special: "Treehouse of Horor (http://www.tv.com/simpsons/treehouse-of-horror/episode/1301/summary.html)."
Oddly enough there's a Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_to_Cook_for_Forty_Humans) dedicated to the cookbook.

I like those. One thing I think you may want to work on is the edges of the letters. They are pretty pixely (they look like they could use some antialiasing).
Also, as I'm sure you're working on, the streched portion looks pertty bad, the gradient looses it's effect.

Yup definately better.
I dont' think the problem is going to be easy to fix, at least not on your end hamradio. I've found that if you want a gradient to be able to strech out to an indefinate length you have to make an image that's maybe 5 pixels wide and make it repeat (instead of streching a 1 pixel wide image). Of course, mouser (or maybe someone else) would have to change the actual html of the page to make it look right.

P.S. The small image looks perfect, I can only see the prob on the large image.

The text looks better - but I think the row of avatars doesn't look so good.

The nice thing about the original was the fun way the avatars were integrated into the design - now it looks like a catalogue which gives it a more amateurish feel ... not that my avatar has that effect ;)

Who's the model on the left? I'd volunteer my services but that would send people rushing away from the site rather than encourage them  :-\

Just a minor warning:
@qrade: i think there's something in the top of the image you submited. the small black-to-white gradient at the top is not the same in the banner as in the expander. I don't think i explained this well, please look at the top of the banner on the testpage: https://www.donationcoder.com/Contests/banner/qrade1/index.html

Hey wreklessxx - nice job.

A lot of the other submissions have a sort of a white out affect going on.  Lots of whie in the color to make it fade in.

The wreklessxx submissions have more of a jewel tone look.  It makes the banner pop a little more.

I only mention this becuase I am proud of myself for being able to figure out the differecne. I'm usually color challenged according to my wife :)

can i just ask, if the new banners follow a completely different colour scheme to the rest of the forum (as it is at the moment), then, will the forum colour layout be changed to match a winning banner that has a novel set of colours?

i.e. are we keeping the colour scheme throughout the forum consistent or doesn't it matter?

I like the one with the talking heads - I think the bubble with the dollar sign in should be a bit smaller, though, and perhaps the dollar sign could be in (parentheses), to show that donation is optional? Just an idea :)

Nice... I like the talking heads. Specially the second one, because it gives a more world-wide look of donationcoder.com.
I also support the $ issue, if it's to be there, it should be "disguised".
I think the way wreklessxx made the cut-out part looks better, though.

Oh... I've just noticed that the first one you submited had cody on the background!!  ;D ;D

maybe a heart with a gold coin in it? or just the gold coin? or just the heart?

i might be over-analyzing, but i like how in the first talking heads one, the guy speaking $ is not isolated from the rest.  otherwise it feels like too much emphasis on the $.  but when he is just one of the others it feels more appropriate.

thanks all for the great suggestions, i think they are all excellent ideas - i will do a few edits later on today.

(i'd just like to say that i knew the dollar sign was going to become a talking point but i quickly accepted it as i thought of it as donationcoder is place that talks about the value of software - i wasn't thinking that the dollar represented a symbol for donations. i do appreciate that i had to invent that line of thought so it wouldn't really be the first thing that visitors would think of.)

oh dear, i've just checked how the banners work when viewed with the rest of the page content - i see there are some issues with my colours matching across the slivers.

i wonder if it might be possible to make the bottom left inset thing where page title is shown, into a fully "bordered" cutout (like rounded renctangle or elipse), instead of it cutting of the entire bottom left. does that make sense? i mean like still show a tiny amount of the left and bottom border of the banner like th right and top sides show? would that look good?

 ;D I could only notice the difference when opening in 2 new windows and fast-switching between them ;)
For me, there's a small issue. Although almost all submissions have this, I think it's a bit strange to have the 3d effect on the cuttout and not on the borders, it looks a bit awkward for the banner to suddenly end on the other borders. I hope I can express myself correctly, does anyone see what i mean?

[edit]Oh, i didn't say, i do like the new version more than the older one ;) [/edit]
Title: Re: Contest - Make a new Banner for Website
Post by: Carol Haynes on May 28, 2006, 07:49 AM
I see what you mean - I also think the 3D lower edge should continue from edge to edge. The left edge needs a shadow (as the light is coming from top right) but the right edge needs to be seen hi-lighted in 3D (and possibly the top edge too) to give the object enough thickness to actually cast a shadow.
Title: Re: Contest - Make a new Banner for Website
Post by: nudone on May 28, 2006, 09:12 AM
i'll do the edits - most of what i've done so far has just been influened from what banners have gone before so 3D accuracy hasn't really been taken into much consideration.

the light source is coming from the top left for all effects by the way - even if it doesn't look like that for the cut out.

but i have to say now that i look at it the cut out shadow doesn't even look like a shadow - it looks like a weird grey edge.

i shall try a more obvious 3D banner later.
Title: Re: Contest - Make a new Banner for Website
Post by: nudone on May 28, 2006, 09:18 AM
another problem is that i've been viewing these banners in isolation instead of how they will actually look when on the web page - the 3D issues you've both mentioned really do look odd now.

that's a lesson learnt - so now i'll be doing my tests with a dummy page in place.

I think another important issue here, is the colour combination. This is a question for mouser: The colours can be changed in order to mach the colors of the banners, right?
Title: Re: Contest - Make a new Banner for Website
Post by: nudone on May 28, 2006, 10:31 AM
i'm guessing that the colours can't be changed on the forum (as there wasn't a reply when i asked) - that's another reason with why i've gone with what has gone before, i.e. i've gone for the same colours in the original donationcoder banner. these don't actually match the rest of the site if we are being pedantic but it seems okay so far.

Just checked and actually it is very easy to change the forum colours (you just have to specify the hex values for all the items) thus:

/* Normal, standard links. */
a:link
{
   color: #000000;
   text-decoration: underline;
}
a:visited, a:hover
{
   color: #323232;
   text-decoration: underline;
}

/* Navigation links - for the link tree. */
.nav, .nav:link, .nav:visited
{
   color: #000000;
   text-decoration: none;
}
a.nav:hover
{
   font-weight: bold;
   color: #cc3333;
   text-decoration: underline;
}

/* Tables should show empty cells. */

SMF supports "themes", that might be worth looking into... users can even choose their own theme. So, I guess the top X best logos could be chosen, and each logo could have it's own theme?

nudone i need a version without text in the tab area :)
then ill add the latest to the demo page (https://www.donationcoder.com/Contests/banner/).

and maybe we need that bottom black shadow on bottom as well?
OR maybe i can just put a hairline black border around the entire top banner

I love the new 3d look on the balloons and characters! That looks sooo good!
And the forum one looks perfect :D

Only one suggestion: I think this might make sense in a forum page, but shouldn't the shadow on the left edge not be there?

I must say this is now one of my favourite submissions to this contest :D

(BTW... will there be only one winner? :( I like the idea of having more than one theme, like selectable in the profile or something, but i think this might be too much work...)

I wouldn't mind seeing a different great banner everytime I visited the site...at least on the forums.

Random rotation of the best ones, maybe?

whoops, sorry about the text, i was using it to get things lined up right.

mouser, not sure what you mean about a bottom black shadow - if you explain then i'll add it.

i tried putting a hairline black border around the entire banner - as this it what all the other boxes are like on the forum - the problem is you can't do this when using the 'sliver' image to tile the banner edge - so i scrapped that idea.

jgpaiva, i put the shadow on the left edge because i thought that's what you and Carol were recommending to do.

the shadow on the border is something that i'm now thinking ought to be removed altogether ???????????????????????

I think it would be fairly easy to have a cycling set of banners that change and that allow the colours to be changed to match. There is no reason why a global variable couldn't be used to hold the current banner and then a 'switch' type structure used in the above functions to select the forum palette ...

Whether Mouser actually wants to do this is for him to comment ;)
Title: Re: Contest - Make a new Banner for Website
Post by: mouser on May 28, 2006, 12:59 PM
i dont want to make a user-selectable theme - it's too much trouble to maintain different themes.

but i am willing to customize the style sheet colors to match the banner if needed.

as for rotating.. i'm not opposed to it, and there is some fun in it... but there is also value in having a single recognizable memorable logo.

I must have not explained myself correctly. What i meant was about the 3d effect of the shadow. Right now, on the lower part, it makes sense, because it goes all around the blue object, from left to right, as you raised the lower edge of it.

But the little vertical shadow on the left doesn't make much sense, since there's no object to create any shadow there.

Ok.. I just got to the point. Now i understand why that shadow is there. It's not the blue part that is elevated, but the beije part that is in a hole.
I really would like to see this banner in a webpage... mouser? ;)

the ($) does decrease the standout of the $ especially if he is not set aside, so maybe we should go back to 4 bubble people all equally spaced if the heart doesn't work?  4 peeps is easier on the eyes then 5.

what about:
? BINARY ! BINARY

without dollarsign?
are we being insanely picky? i can't tell yet.

i do like it with the thin grey border i know that much.

i'll do the four people no dollar binary repeat edit tomorrow.

any more suggestions, post them now and i'll read them in the morning before i start changing things.

i've made this new 'sliver'. everything looks okay in photoshop when i join the sliver to the main website image but are you converting these to .gif, mouser? that's the only thing i can see that might be changing the colour depth other than me uploading something that didn't match in the first place - which is quite likely.

let me just throw out the idea of reducing to 3 people on the globe and then cody as the last creature.
and then removing him from far right.  just an idea.

one other advantage of nudone's balloon speaking logo banner is that we can pop in new symbols in the balloons on special occasions.

I think this has reached an important point.
Wouldn't it be possible to have the globe with cody on the right, the sliver in the middle, and the rest of the banner on the left?
I think that would be just perfect.

that would probably be better done with the world (or whatever) becoming part of the gif/png that cody is made out of on the current live website - this would allow it to overlay the banner underneath.

(i think.)

Right, that's a good point!
I mentioned this, because i think the globe looks better on the right side of the screen, and because cody shouldn't be in the 2 places (i think).

i meant him standing on it.. as if he was like a dog being walked by the last guy on the far right.. if that makes sense.

i will experiment with splitting off the banner between the earth and text and putting the sliver in between.

i've taken out the stroke and this appears to give a much better effect overall (in my opinion).

if it's decided that cody isn't going to stand on the world then i'll remove the stroke from the non cody version too.

the only downside for cody being in the world is that he's now so small it's going to be a bit tricky when we come to have a themed cody.

Well after several months.. this contest has finally ended with a glorious winning banner - the one you see at the top of the site now.

It should come as no surprise that Nudone, who created our mascot Cody, came up with the winning design.  We had some lovely entries, and i think the interaction of testing and iterating through versions helped inspire the winning design as well.  Thank you to everyone who submitted something.

Congratulations again to nudone.   :Thmbsup:

let me add something:
i am in love with the new banner.

i can't quite say why, but i think it somehow captures the playful spirit of the site..
and perhaps it captures a bit of the fact that this site is a bit convoluted and it's features are not easily explained in one word.. but somehow when you look at it you kind of know it's going to be fun to discover the details.  at least that's what i see.

and i love the 2d-3d combo look, that kind of feels like an old fashioned Diorama.

here's the winning banner to save you time from visiting the main page:

i'd just like to say i feel privileged (as always) to be involved with DC and to be the final winner. thanks to everyone that made suggestions and helped develop the look of the final banner - i certainly enjoy this iterative method of design as it appears to give a rewarding result.

and, one final word.

i can't keep it a secret any longer: mr.globe never went away - he just chose to hide himself.
