General Software Discussion / Re: 32bit Linux distro recommendations
« on: December 16, 2020, 09:03 AM »
I found this article with 8 small distros that may work.  First on the list is Puppy Linux.  I did play around with Puppy booting from a USB on an HP Laptop.  It is small and easy to configure.  The WiFi was easy to enable.  I think the HP only had a Celeron CPU so Puppy may be a good one to try first.

General Software Discussion / Re: What Android Apps Do You Use?
« on: November 23, 2020, 03:05 PM »
I have been using 1 Tap Cache Cleaner Pro for a few months now.  The main function is similar to CCleaner's Deep Clean.  I could not get CCleaner to do the deep clean on my phone.  Through trial and error and reading reviews I found this one.  It is worth spending the few bucks for the Pro because Turbo Mode cache cleaning is about 5 times faster than the one used in the free version.

Plus it comes with a cool widget that shows the current total cache in use.  Tapping the widget brings up the main UI so you can refresh and choose how thorough a clean to perform.  It has some other functions I have not tried so I cannot speak to how well they work.

The Turbo Mode seems to use the same technique as CCleaner but it hides the details of bringing up each app in the cache by showing its own screen on top.  You only see a slight flicker.  It appears to be reliable and it is kind of fun to use through the widget.

I think Turbo Mode requires at least Android 8.0 but if it has been improved to accommodate older Android versions that info may be found in the Pro features description.

Less people around ... but unfortunately the good times are coming to an end as we get closer to exiting Stage 4 lockdown.

My worry is as soon as they stop paying mortgages for people it will create a surge of new and clueless homeless on the streets.  I envisage them crawling over each other like ants.

When I told people I got food stamps they asked how much I got a month.  When I said $16 they laughed.  But with the pandemic they boosted everyone to the max allotment.  From March to September that was $194 for single head of household.  This month it was bumped up to $204.

This has allowed me to enjoy some desserts and other goodies on occasion without breaking the bank.  Also the stimulus check helped a bit.  Additionally trains and buses in Miami are free during the emergency.  On the downside water fountains are disabled everywhere.  If I am thirsty I shell out for Evian low sodium.  Good thing I have the temporary food stamp increase.

The big bummer for me is not being able to buy a hot meal and sit down to eat it.  Everything is to go.  No fun finding someplace to eat in the rain.  Some of the Starbucks have a couple of seats inside.  But for the most part the seating consists of tiny square tables under umbrellas outside.

I noticed on my last two phones that the automatic system updates pushed on me really slowed booting and also made the phone act flakier than it was out of the box.  Now that it is almost too late to do any good I found the slider in Developer Settings to disable automatic system updates.  When I get a new phone I need to remember to look for that setting and disable it before they have a chance to foist the update on me.  :)

I just thought I would pass it on since getting a new phone has many distractions and it is very easy to forget pitfall avoidance settings of this nature.   8)
