Title: Launchy is now available for Linux (!)
Post by: mouser on July 28, 2008, 02:17 PM
This is a pretty big deal.  Launchy is a very popular open source Launcher tool (much like my own FARR: Find And Run Robot (https://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Mouser/findrun/index.html)).

Lifehacker reports today that Launchy is now available for linux.

Obviously I'm biased for FARR but it's not going to be ported to linux anytime in the forseable future, so for those of you who have been wanting a top-of-the-line launcher for linux you now have one you should be happy with.

A lot of people in the lifehacker comments are saying that for linux they prefer Gnome Do (http://do.davebsd.com/).

FARR is still better - even if I am a Linux user and sorry there's not a port for it.

The big problem Launchy faces in comparison with GNOME Do is lack of system integration. Thanks to its plugin system, you can search and play music in Amarok, or chat with your contacts in Pidgin, which IMO is the next step in launchers evolution (and well, what everyone dreams to do with their launcher of choice).

Still, it's nice to see more competition in the platform, even if Launchy developer seems to lack development time, considering the absence of new versions for a time, and how much it took to get a Linux version (he still has the Mac OS X version as well). I guess not every developer can release new versions every day ;)

Josh, did anybody ever tell you that's one evil avatar? Can't tell you how many times I've found myself reaching up to squash that little gnat thing you've got. But I guess that's the whole idea isn't it?

I thought I was the only one! :-[ - gets me really paranoid sometimes, seeing stuff move at edge of my eyesight.

I had one of the little beasts in my monitor not so long ago, aaaarrrggghhhhh, eventually the vacuum cleaner got it out  ;D  So i get even more paranoid about them than those to whom that has not happened, no doubt your turn will come!

Interesting to say the least. FARR for Linux would be a mindblower, though!

farr was almost working with wine a while ago (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=8242.0). Anybody tried it with one of the newest builds?

BUMP...

Yeah, what Armando said...

I bought an Asus Eee recently and installed Ubuntu on it. Liking it much so far, but Gnome-Do is nowhere near FARR and FARR is essential when using Windows.

See if you can frighten it away... give it an ant-y glare

mouser, now when did you say FARR was coming to Linux?  :P  (It'd be worth the wait.)

Meanwhile, I still just use ALT+F2 instead of Launchy.
