Title: RPG on the forum
Post by: mouser on June 01, 2006, 06:36 PM
This is not an entirely new idea -
other forums have done it in the paste.

the idea is to invent a kind of funny/silly role playing game that people can play with one another through the forum.

you could actually write it as an independent little php (or whatever) script, and we could easily add code to autodetect username and avatar using forum login.

other forums have done it in the paste.

So it would be a 'sticky' topic?

Seriously, like a full-on 3D dungeon slasher? Old-school text adventure like Zork (http://thcnet.net/zork/index.php) or the old Infocom games (http://www.xs4all.nl/~pot/infocom/)? 2D maze/adventure like NetHack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nethack) (w/tiles or else we'll have to upgrade our video cards (http://bbspot.com/News/2003/02/ati_ascii.html)) ? or a fun puzzle-based adventure with minimal graphics ala Kindom of Loathing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_loathing)? Hey, it could even include a Cody Bot (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=5257.0) to drop clues and sundries... The possibilities are endless. (and interacting with other members should be a feature)

BTW- an open-source PHP based engine can be found here: http://www.3eproductions.com/games.php

Or do it something like Neopets (http://www.neopets.com)?

It could contain plenty of Cody based flash games as part of the bigger game.

And if done right, and made kid friendly, can also be used to help shape the minds of the next generation of software users to help make them friendlier to the idea of supporting freeware/donationware/OSS and contributing to authors and projects.

btw...Kingdom of Loathing is like Neopets on crack.  :D

What about one where you get "exp" by the number of posts you make, this way "awards" are granted by the amount of interaction you have here on the site... ;)

Or something like a Passively Multiplayer Online Game (PMOG (http://www.passivelymultiplayer.com/)), or IttyBitty RPG (http://www.ittybittyrpg.com/),

For the coding snacks section of the game, a 2D shooter where waves and waves of ideas attack from above and you shoot your coding beam at them.  The ideas that don't get shot down land beside you, grow into full-blown projects, and attack you with feature requests.
