Title: Google+ Extensions thread

Here's one called Usability Boost for Google Plus (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/dkcppcocablbakkaboahjmljpodddkcp):
"It's small CSS changes that put the focus on the content, separating visually posts and comments."

It's a subtle change, but it definitely improves readability.

And some goodies from Micah Whittman (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=224054) (Yes, he is a DC member, so if you like his stuff, you can easily show your support) Micah is legendary for his enhancements to Friendfeed, and he has been busy enhancing our experiences on G+ too!

http://wittman.org/google-plus-extensions/

GooglePlusPlus User Mute - The googleplusplus_user_mute userscript / extension for Google+ (aka Google Plus aka G+) mutes all posts by specific users. Click MUTE USER link next to the Public/Limited status. Once muted, a placeholder for each post appears with {User Name} UNMUTE, which if clicked will stop muting that particular user.

GooglePlusPlus Default Circle - The googleplusplus_default_circle userscript / extension for Google Plus (aka Google+ aka G+) adds a star next to each circle stream name. The star can be clicked to set or unset one circle stream as your default. When a default is set, going to the Stream view (which is an aggregate of all your circles) you automatically get redirected to your default stream.

GooglePlusPlus Hide Images - googleplusplus_hide_images is a user script for Google Plus (aka Google+ aka G+) that adds a button under each Google Plus post image to hide it (toggle show / hide). Hides the image on original post and all shared posts. Tired of an animated GIF that keeps getting shared over and over in different posts? – hide it once an forget about it.

GooglePlusPlus Hide Comments - The googleplusplus_hide_comments userscript for Google Plus adds a Hide Comments or Show Comments link on each post; this feature is sticky (the hidden or shown state is recorded in the browser’s local storage).

GooglePlusPlus Search With Google - googleplusplus_search_with_google is a user script for Google Plus (aka Google+ aka G+) that toggles the built-in search input Find People with another option: Search Google Plus with the Google search engine using the site: filter.

GooglePlusPlus Hide Sidebars - The googleplusplus_hide_sidebars is a user script for Google Plus (aka Google+ aka G+) that adds a feature to hide/show left and right side bars, and makes the main content wider. This feature is sticky and will show either a Hide Sidebars link or Show Sidebars link.

That crossrider stuff is considered malware. (Google+Twitter and Google+Facebook)

They change your default search engine without asking and tamper with your email, possibly giving the developer full access to the content of your email messages.

'Start G+' Adds a Gmail inbox notifier, which you can disable.
Warnings are posted at the app store of what it can access.
You can disable Facebook and Twitter functions as well.
But those are the point of the extension.
It also can access Picasa Web and the developer for updates.
The Beta does not auto update though.

http://inzania.com/sgp/

He keeps developing it, so I think it will be a good one, imo.
Personally I like to keep them separate-Google+ and Facebook.
I just tested it to see if it works and it still does.

There are dozens of articles on how to use Google+ for beginners. Finally, Mashable's Stephanie Buck takes it to the next level. She's interviewed some very serious "power users" about how they use Google+ circles for sourcing, learning, deeper interaction, filtering, personal memos, organizing, and preparing for the future. A well-written piece. Coming soon: Venn Diagram circles!

G+me for Google Plus
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/oacdcllhgpddmlnhajiacfakhlilbicp
_________________________
via Softpedia (http://news.softpedia.com/news/G-me-Chrome-Extension-Enhances-the-Google-Experience-213140.shtml):
[It's] a toolbar icon shows G+ notifications in real-time. This means that users don't need to be on Google-related tabs to see if there's anything new happening on G+. The notifications are now visible everywhere. However, the central feature of this extension is that its ability to collapse read posts while remembering their last state for future sessions. Additionally, if users want to keep the posts expanded but not see all the associated comments, G+me gives them the option to hide the comment stream. The collapsed comments bar will continue to show and update the comment number at the end and if a new one is posted, hovering the mouse pointer over the comment number will display a pop-up with the content. Similarly, hovering the mouse pointer over a collapsed post will display a fully-functional preview of its extended version. Users can also opt for list-mode view which keeps all posts collapsed by default and allows a single one to be extended at a time.

Chrome extensions are seldomly more than compiled user scripts because Chrome is not capable of doing really serious things ...  :P

I am not sure if it is a good idea to add a bunch of user scripts for Google+ while its interface is constantly changing.

Stream+ for Google+
http://stream-plus.appspot.com/

The following experiment is just a proof of concept of how to use the Google+ API. Built over the hangout, developed by +Mohamed Mansour.
Once you log in, it will fetch all your public posts on your stream and classifies each item in a topic. Later on you can view all your topics on the left and all the documents that are similar to that topic on the right. So far, the API looks solid, this was built without knowing AppEngine or OAuth. Props to the AppEngine team, you guys really did something so easy. I am in love with the Eclipse IDE integration. Very easy, took me minutes to learn it. I just used the examples online given by the Google+ team and hacked away with the API. I am really impressed regarding the simplicity of the API. The core logic and algorithms were completed in around 3 hours while the remaining of the time was tweaking the UI to make the experience better.

Could be because of its beta-ish state, but here Google+ is  s - l - o - w.
It's been like that, well... at least since I've started using it.  :)

I like the way it works etc., but I have to have to wait for ever for pages to finally load. Compared to it, Facebook is a racing car. And that's not a good thing. :-[

Am I the only one experiencing that slowness ?

Not sure, but there's no good reason it should be slow in your part of Canada. Are you using Chrome browser or another browser?
Title: Re: Google+ Extensions thread
Post by: mahesh2k on September 17, 2011, 07:16 AM
I checked the elements that loads with G+, i guess they're running flash+ajax on the page, that could be the reason they're slow.
Title: Re: Google+ Extensions thread
Post by: Armando on September 17, 2011, 10:55 AM
@zridling, @mahesh2k

Chrome is faster than firefox for sure (although chrome once choked on a Google+ page -- this is anecdotal though and probably doesn't tell anything).

In any case Google+ doesn't seem light at all... don't know if Flash and Ajax are the "cause" or if Firefox is. Will do some more testing this week if I have the time. Thanks.
Title: Re: Google+ Extensions thread

Chrome is not faster than Firefox. It was, years ago...
Title: Re: Google+ Extensions thread
Post by: Armando on September 17, 2011, 12:33 PM
You might be right. But that's not the point. Errr...  I should've put my comment in context : in the context of Google+ and my home, Chrome is faster than Firefox for sure.  :) (I've usually got no interest in benchmarks of any sort for browsers as it seems like an endless debate with too many parameters involved -- Unless the difference is so blunt that there's no possible ambiguity.)
Title: Re: Google+ Extensions thread
Post by: Tuxman on September 17, 2011, 12:36 PM
It is entirely independent of the website that Firefox is faster, unless Google introduced some "let's slow down foreign browsers" technology.
Title: Re: Google+ Extensions thread
Post by: Armando on September 17, 2011, 01:48 PM
Ok, firefox is faster... That said, Google+ is still slower here on firefox and I'm wondering why. But no big deal... I was asking if other people had the same experience as this is a Google+ related thread.
Title: Re: Google+ Extensions thread
Post by: JavaJones on September 17, 2011, 09:11 PM
G+ is not *usually* slow for me, though certainly it is sometimes. Does it seem slow as in "taking a while to fetch the data from the server" or slow as in "running too much Javascript and slowing down my browser/computer"?

FF may benchmark faster (depends on version and test), but in repeated anecdotal "tests" Chrome "feels" faster (this is a sentiment echoed by almost anyone I know who has tried Chrome recently vs. FF). :D

- Oshyan
Title: Re: Google+ Extensions thread
Post by: Tuxman on September 17, 2011, 09:39 PM
It "feels" faster because everyone implies that.
Title: Re: Google+ Extensions thread
Post by: zridling on September 17, 2011, 09:55 PM
You might be right. I don't have Flash installed on my Linux system for that very reason -- idiots were building entire websites of Flash and it will bring the entire browser to a halt. Wasn't worth the few videos I miss here and there. Convert them to HTML5 or not, I won't go back to Flash.
Title: Re: Google+ Extensions thread
Post by: Armando on September 18, 2011, 03:33 PM
Thanks for everybody's input on my tangential preoccupations. The general consensus is that firefox should be fast, and it seems reasonable enough (even if Chrome does "feel" faster, for both subjective and objective reasons...  ;)). I'm absolutely not ready to abandon firefox for chrome, so I will later disable some (or all) firefox plugins and re-enable them in little groups and... report back.

I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere in these add-ons lies the source of problem.
Title: Re: Google+ Extensions thread
Post by: Armando on September 18, 2011, 04:10 PM
Ok, the problem is the NoScript add-on. It's the first one I disabled, so it was easy (the usual suspect).

Whitelisting the https://plus.google.com/ address or even enabling all scripts didn't seem to make a difference. Later, I might try to tinker a bit more with it, but for now, with NoScript disabled... Firefox is almost as fast as chrome...  ;)

Now let's see if Google Plus remains fast throughout the week.

Title: Re: Google+ Extensions thread
Post by: Armando on September 20, 2011, 09:11 PM
Counter-studies would be nice.  :)
In any case, considering the current state of affair, it makes more sense to hypothesise that Chrome has a slightly better performance overall. Conversely, it's probably not that legitimate to unitarily affirm that chrome is not faster than Firefox.
But this isn't the subject of this thread.

I tried a few Google+ extensions and... well, let's say the best is probably yet to be seen.
Title: Re: Google+ Extensions thread

It all depends on the actual website, I presume. The more Javascript is used, the better Firefox performs than Chrome. (And these days, almost everything is Javascript. Dumbass web "designers".)

Improve the G+ reply mechanism immensely by grabbing the Replies and More Google+ Chrome extension. This one actually allowed me to drop two other extensions since it did a better job.

G+ Stream Pause
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/clelpdcobdkbcjfcfcmkoeldfobapohe

This one works great, and I've no idea why Google doesn't include a simple function like this to start with. It pauses your stream with universal PAUSE/PLAY symbols on your toolbar. Now you can read a longer post, extended comments, or compose a comment yourself without new posts continuously bouncing your cursor point offscreen.

CAVEAT: This extension pauses -- or rather freezes -- your entire stream "page," temporary disabling G+'s autopagination. Reactivate the stream and the "More Entries" bar at the bottom works again.
